Sault Ste Marie Forest Management Unit Compartment Review Presentation Compartment #124 Entry Year: 2013 Compartment Acreage: 1,908 County: Mackinac Revision Date: 7/19/2013 Stand Examiner: Cory Luoto Legal Description: T43N R7W Sections: 10 12 Hendricks Township RMU (if applicable): Mackinac Mix Management Goals: This compartment is located approximately three miles east of Rexton and five miles north of Epoufette. The timber types within this compartment are predominated by cedar and swamp conifer but there are also aspen birch, northern hardwoods, white pine, lowland hardwoods, and inclusions of bog types, other lowlands, grassy openings, and there is a red pine plantation. The aspen, birch, and spruce fir types are regenerating nicely and the hardwoods and hemlock need regular treatment to promote health and growth. The cedar types and previous cutting over the past couple of decades, preclude management opportunities for this entry period. Soil and Topography: Lowlands and swamps consist primarily of Markey and Carbondale mucks, with Spot-Finch and Markey-Spot-Finch complexes. Uplands are generally Amadon-Rock outcrop complex, Menominee loamy sand, Wallace sand, and Paquin sand. Level lowlands to rolling uplands. Ownership Patterns, Development, and Land Use in and Around the Compartment: Compartment 124 has no private land ownership within its boundaries. The compartment is surrounded by state land except for one private forty along the north border and two private forties along the southern border. Unique, Natural Features: There are a few shallow bog lakes. Archeological, Historical, and Cultural Features: There are no features of note. Special Management Designations or Considerations: There are no special management concerns in this compartment. Watershed and Fisheries Considerations: Portions of this compartment are within the NLMMU and NLHMU. The portion in NLHMU is within the South Branch Carp River watershed, but there is no surface water within the compartment. Wildlife Habitat Considerations: This compartment is located east of Strouble Lake in the St. Ignace subsection of the Niagaran Escarpment and Lake Plain. Lowland conifer swamp consisting of cedar, tamarack, and black spruce dominates much of the compartment and continues to the south. Remaining areas include a red pine plantation as well as some aspen and northern hardwood patches in the southwest corner, and mixes of aspen, northern hardwoods, and lowland deciduous stands on the northern and eastern

sides. Most stands outside of the dominant swamp conifer are young, providing habitat for ruffed grouse, American woodcock, white-tailed deer, and snowshoe hare. Wildlife objectives include maintaining the integrity of the lowland conifer habitat, protecting rare species, maintaining early successional deciduous habitat, and encouraging diversity in northern hardwoods. Snags and coarse woody debris will be retained to provide habitat for cavity nesters and amphibians. Bobcat, fisher, marten, white-tailed deer, ruffed grouse, snowshoe hare, and thrushes are some of the wildlife species that will benefit from this management. Mineral Resource and Development Concerns and/or Restrictions: Surface sediments consist of lacustrine (lake) sand and gravel and peat and muck. There is insufficient data to determine the glacial drift thickness. The Silurian Engadine Group subcrops below the glacial drift. The Engadine is quarried for stone/limestone elsewhere in the UP. The nearest gravel pit is located one and one-half miles to the northwest. Gravel potential appears to be limited in the compartment. There is no economic oil and gas production in the UP. Vehicle Access: Hiawatha Trail, which is a class A county road, borders the west side of the compartment. There are several two tracks that run off of the paved road that go into Section 10. Access to the eastern part of the compartment is from the Caffey Truck Trail, which is a DNR gravel road. There are numerous abandoned ice roads that are not shown on the map. Survey Needs: None identified at this time. Recreational Facilities and Opportunities: The Caffey Truck Trail is groomed snowmobile trail is also part of the Rexton Brevort ORV trail. Fire Protection: This is a low fire danger area. Additional Compartment Information: None The following reports from the Inventory are attached: Total Acres by Cover Type and Age Class Proposed Summary Proposed s No Limiting Factors Proposed s With Limiting Factors Stand Details (Forested and Nonforested) Dedicated and Proposed Special Conservation Areas The following information is displayed, where pertinent, on the attached compartment maps: Base feature information, stand boundaries, cover types, and numbers Proposed treatments Details on the road access system

Sault Ste. Marie Mgt. Unit Compartment: 124 8 DEDICATED CONSERVATION AREA DETAILS Year of Entry 2013 * This is a list of Dedicated Biodiversity Areas for this compartment along with a 1/4 mile buffer surrounding the compartment. Refer to Dedicated Conservation Area Map for areas that the below listed Conservation Areas are located. Conservation Area Type Description ERA = Ecological Reference Area HCVA = High Conservation Value Area SCA = Special Conservation Area ERA SCA Ecological Reference Areas Habitat Area Ecological Reference Areas (ERAs) are high quality examples of natural communities that have been identified as Element Occurrences (EOs) by the Michigan Natural Features Inventory (MNFI) within the context of their natural community classification system. Element Occurrences with viability ranks of A (Excellent) or B (Good) and a Global (G) or State (S) element (rarity) ranking of endangered (1), threatened (2), or rare (3) serve as an initial base of ERAs. They may be located upon any ownership in the State. The system is comprised of individual or associations of natural community types that are managed for restoration and maintenance of natural ecological processes and values. The public may submit recommendations for lands as ERAs using the DNR Conservation Area Recommendation Form. An area that provide some specific need for the life cycle of wildlife species, including State Wildlife Areas and Waterfowl Production Areas, deer wintering complexes in lowland conifer communities, grassland openings and savannas. Habitat areas are distinct from critical habitat designated for recovery of endangered or threatened species (such as Kirtland's warbler or piping plover areas) in that they are more general in nature, are not primarily associated with threatened or endangered species, and are not covered by species recovery plans that are developed in cooperation with Federal agencies. 09/13/2011 8:31:35 AM - Page 1 of 1 Data updated yesterday after 6:00 PM
