Process Service Note Honeywell s Dynamic Engineering Studies Group Dynamic simulation services for process design, control and troubleshooting Dynamic Engineering Studies Group Capabilities UniSim Design Suite, part of Honeywell s breadth of Advanced capabilities, is the suite of simulation software tools used to perform dynamic modeling and engineering studies. UniSim Design is an essential foundation of Honeywell s ability to provide a variety of detailed dynamic modeling and engineering studies. The appended experience list summarizes the track record for Honeywell s Dynamic Engineering Studies group. Studies the group has executed include: Emergency depressuring and flare relief Compressor and surge control High Integrity Pressure Protection System (HIPPS) Integrated pipeline and production platforms Process design and controllability Let s take a look at what drives these types of studies, as well as review some of the customer benefits. Emergency depressuring and flare relief studies In cases where plant capacity is being expanded, careful consideration must also be given to the plant s flare system capacity to ensure that it meets safety requirements. Detailed dynamic studies of unit depressuring, including dynamic models of the flare system, can determine the existing relief system s ability to handle the new relief loads. In many cases, detailed dynamic studies have shown that the size of the current relief system is sufficient to handle the relief loads of the expanded plant thereby avoiding the need to also expand the relief and flare system. The savings of this avoidance frequently run in the tens of millions of dollars. Compressor and surge control studies Many of today s plant designs rely on large, expensive compressor systems. The expense of damages to compressor systems can quickly run into the tens of millions of dollars, not only due to the cost of the equipment but also to the loss of profits during plant downtime. Further, large compressors are long lead-time items, often requiring two to three years of lead time to replace if the damage is severe enough. For these reasons and others, it is critical that customers are able to rely on their compressor protection systems making certain they are properly designed and are capable of operating correctly in order to protect these valuable assets. Utilizing detailed dynamic compressor system models including such factors as detailed compressor models, surge controllers, valves, and piping to study potential trip events, can identify flaws in the system, or provide the assurance that the compressor system is properly designed and fully protected. High Integrity Pressure Protection Systems (HIPPS) studies Many customers today are implementing HIPPS to provide additional protection to valuable equipment such as separation units and more importantly, to personnel working around these systems in the event of potentially catastrophic plant upsets. It is

Dynamic Simulation Services for Process Design, Control and Troubleshooting 2 important to ensure that the system being implemented provides a suitable response to plant upsets. Dynamic studies utilizing detailed dynamic models can validate the timing and effects of events and the trigger points programmed into the HIPPS, thus ensuring that the system works as required. The cost of a failure cannot be predicted, in either dollar terms or liability, but it most certainly would be exceedingly high. Integrated pipeline and production platform studies Modern oil production, especially offshore, relies on pipelines to feed production facilities and transport the dewatered and degassed oil for further processing. One of the main concerns of a typical offshore oil production platform is how well the facility handles slugs in the incoming oil flow. These slugs can be of gas or water intermingled with the normal oil/water/gas flow. The slug catcher size is typically the most important variable in the ability of the system to handle these events. Naturally, the tendency would be to oversize the slug catcher in order to provide a wider safety margin. However, since the weight of the slug catcher vessel impacts the total weight of the platform, not only due to its own weight, but also the structural steel required to support it, the slug catcher size on the platform also greatly impacts cost. A detailed dynamic analysis that includes predictions of slug size and frequency, as well as considers slug catcher control algorithms, is extremely useful for determining the slug catcher size such that it provides the required safety margin at a minimum cost. The potential savings are in the millions of dollars in platform cost. Significant benefits can also be realized by avoiding the need to cut production rates during operation when the slug catcher is sized too small. Further applications of detailed dynamic studies to these types of systems includes controllability and operability issues, and in cases of gas-only production, the utilization of the gas-export line volume and line packing as a storage medium to ensure availability. Process design and controllability studies Detailed dynamic models of new plant designs can be reviewed even before they are constructed in order to determine a particular design s operability. This type of study serves to identify potential control issues before they become native to the plant. Special control algorithms, including advanced process control strategies, can be evaluated and many other issues can be identified long before plant startup. This approach, which is an important part of the modeling lifecycle concept, ensures safer and faster startups. The potential for savings runs in the millions of dollars when considering the cost avoidance of wasted feedstock (or rework) and added profit due to faster on-spec production at startup. Note that these types of studies can be combined with Operator Training Simulator (OTS) projects that, in addition to providing operator training, identify any shortcomings with the Distributed Control System (DCS) and/or logic (interlocks and Emergency Shutdown Systems) configuration. The benefits of such an approach include the added profit and reduced costs due to shorter initial start-ups and peace of mind that the operators will take the desired corrective actions in the event of a plant upset.
