Introduction Professional, Scientific and Technical is the fifth largest employing industry in Australia, employing 852 000 workers (or 7.8 per cent of the total workforce) as at February 2010. The industry is divided into nine sectors: Legal and Accounting ; Architectural, Engineering and Technical ; Computer System Design; Management and Related Consulting; Advertising ; Scientific Research ; Market Research and Statistical ; Veterinary ; and Other Professional, Scientific and Technical. The discussion below focuses on employment characteristics, trends and prospects in the Professional, Scientific and Technical industry, and highlights sectors where job growth is strongest. The analysis of characteristics includes workforce ageing, employment share by gender, educational profile, weekly earnings, average hours worked, regional and occupational employment. Most data in this Industry Outlook, and on SkillsInfo (www.skillsinfo.gov.au), are based on the ABS Labour Force Survey. For many small sectors within industries, standard errors are large relative to the size of the employment estimates. Although trend or annual average data are used for most employment estimates, figures should be used with caution, especially for the smallest employing sectors. Employment Growth Despite a slight drop over the year to February 2009, employment in the Professional, Scientific and Technical industry has shown strong growth over the past eight years (see Figure 1). In the 10 years to February 2010, employment in the industry rose by 271 400 to 852 000. This represents an average annual growth rate of 3.9 per cent. Over the year to February 2010, employment in the industry grew by 77 500 (or 10.0 per cent), the second largest employment growth out of the 19 industries and the largest for the industry in the last 15 years. Between 2003 and 2008, the industry experienced six successive years of employment gains. Employment in Professional, Scientific and Technical is influenced not only by international economic and geopolitical factors, but is also sensitive to business profitability and investment in Australia. When employment in the Professional, Scientific and Technical industry is broken down into sectors, the main contributors to employment can be identified. Legal and Accounting is the largest sector in the Professional, Scientific and Technical industry, accounting for 30.3 per cent of industry employment or 260 000 workers as at February 2010 (see Figure 3). Architectural, Engineering and Technical is the second largest source of employment, employing 216 900 workers (or 25.3 per cent). Other Professional, Scientific and Technical, employing 23 900 workers (or 2.8 per cent), and Veterinary, representing 20 800 workers (or 2.4 per cent) were the smallest sectors within the industry. Employment Prospects DEEWR prepares annual updates of employment projections for industries for the next five years, the latest to 2014-15. The projections are an annual average for the five years. These are based in part on economic models, including Access Economics and the Monash model developed by the Centre of Policy Studies at Monash University, but also take into account recent employment trends and prospective industry developments. It should be noted that a certain degree of uncertainty is attached to these employment projections, especially for sectors within Professional, Scientific and Technical. In the five years to 2014-15, DEEWR has projected employment in the Professional, Scientific and Technical industry to grow at an average rate of 2.6 per cent per annum (see Figure 4), which equates to 111 200 new jobs. This compares with an average annual growth rate of 1.8 per cent for all industries over the same period. Employment growth is expected to increase in all sectors of the Professional, Scientific and Technical industry (see Figure 5). Computer System Design is projected to have the strongest employment growth (up by 3.2 per cent per annum), followed by Other Professional, Scientific and Technical and Scientific Research (both 3.0 per cent per annum). Three sectors are forecast to grow at a slower rate than the industry as a whole: Management and Related Consulting (up by 0.5 per cent per annum), Market Research and Statistical (0.8 per cent per annum) and Advertising (1.5 per cent per annum). In the five years to February 2010, employment increased in all sectors of the Professional, Scientific and Technical industry (see Figure 6). Legal and Accounting experienced the largest employment growth (56 100 new jobs), followed by Computer System Design (52 700) and Architectural, Engineering and Technical (41 400). In the five years to 2014-15, the largest number of job gains is expected to occur in Legal and Accounting (up by 37 300), followed by Architectural, Engineering and Technical (30 200) and Computer System Design (26 200). Vacancy Trends DEEWR has developed an Internet Vacancy Index (IVI) covering all occupations across all skill levels. IVI is based on a count of online vacancies newly lodged on SEEK, MyCareer, CareerOne and Australian JobSearch. The Industry IVI is based on the distribution of the existing IVI counts to broad industry groups using occupational and industry employment proportions from the ABS Labour Force Survey. Over the year to February 2010, the Professional, Scientific and Technical IVI decreased by 24.9 per cent, compared with a decrease of 11.3 per cent for all industries (see Figure 7). Between February 2008 and February 2010, internet vacancies in Professional, Scientific and Technical fell by 23 221 (or 53.3 per cent). The largest fall over the same period occurred in New South Wales (down by 9422), followed by Queensland (5486, see Figure 8). Over the year to February 2010, the largest fall in internet vacancies occurred in Queensland (down by 1980). Workforce Ageing Compared with other industries, the Professional, Scientific and Technical industry has an above average share of prime age workers (25 to 44 years). Over half (52.3 per cent) of the Professional, Scientific and Technical workforce is aged between 25 to 44 years, compared with 44.7 per cent for all industries (see Figure 9). This compares with a median age of 39.0 years for all industries (see Figure 10). The Scientific Research sector recorded the highest median age (42.5 years) within the industry. Advertising recorded a median age which was the lowest in the industry (32.8 years). In 2009, over a third (35.8 per cent) of workers in Professional, Scientific and Technical were aged 45 years and over, which was below the share of mature age workers for all industries (38.5 per cent, see Figure 11). Figure 12 shows employment in the industry by age group for three calendar years: 1999, 2004 and 2009. This provides a guide to changes in the employment mix by age group. As the Australian workforce experiences an increase in the median age of the population, it is important that there is a supply of prime age and mature age workers entering the workforce. In response to the strong growth in employment, there has been an increase of workers in the Professional, Scientific and Technical industry in all age groups over the past five years. Workers aged between 55 and 64 years experienced the largest employment growth in the five years to 2009 (up by 55 700), followed by workers aged 25 to 34 years (53 800). Employment by Gender and Full-time/Part-time Employment in the Professional, Scientific and Technical industry is slightly higher for males than for females. In the year to February 2010, males accounted for 56.4 per cent of industry employment, compared with 54.4 per cent of male workers in all industries (see Figure 13). Workers in this industry are generally employed on a full-time basis, with 77.6 per cent of the industry workforce working full-time compared with the all industries average of 70.3 per cent. Full-time employment is also higher for females in the industry (27.8 per cent) than for females in all industries (24.7 per cent). The highest female proportions of employment were in Veterinary (76.8 per cent), Legal and Accounting (62.0 per cent) and Market Research and Statistical (52.0 per cent). Source: ABS Labour Force Survey cat. no. 6291.0.55.003 (four quarter average) In the five years to February 2010, employment for both male and female workers in Professional, Scientific and Technical has risen strongly (up by 79 400 and 59 500 respectively, see Figure 15), with most of this growth attributable to full-time workers (65 400 and 35 300 respectively). The highest full-time employment shares can be found in Computer System Design (85.8 per cent), followed by Advertising (81.7 per cent) and Architectural, Engineering and Technical (79.6 per cent). The lowest share of full-time employment was apparent in Veterinary (60.4 per cent). Hours Worked On average, full-time employees in the Professional, Scientific and Technical industry worked slightly longer hours than full-time employees across all industries in the year to February 2010 (42.0 hours compared with 41.1 hours for all industries). Over a fifth of workers (20.7 per cent) employed in Professional, Scientific and Technical worked 50 or more hours per week. See Figure 17. Employment Characteristics Educational Profile In general, Professional, Scientific and Technical workers are highly qualified, with 79.1 per cent of workers having completed a non-school qualification as at May 2009 (see Figure 18), well above the all industries average of 61.3 per cent. More than half (54.9 per cent) of all workers in the industry had obtained a Bachelor degree or higher qualification. However, just over a fifth (20.9 per cent) of workers in the industry were without a non-school qualification, reflecting the diverse range of occupations on offer in the Professional, Scientific and Technical industry. Median Weekly Earnings Median weekly full-time earnings in the Professional, Scientific and Technical industry vary with a large range of occupations (see Figure 19). As at August 2008, median weekly full-time earnings in the industry were $1208, higher than the all industries average of $1000. Computer System Design ($1400) and Management and Related Consulting ($1265) recorded the highest median full-time weekly earnings within the industry. Only Veterinary ($770) recorded median full-time weekly earnings ($800) which were below the all industries average. In the year to February 2010, the majority of workers in Professional, Scientific and Technical were employed in Sydney (225 300), followed by Melbourne (185 900), Brisbane (119 300) and Perth (70 100, see Figure 20). Main Employing Occupations The Professional, Scientific and Technical industry offers a diverse range of career options. In 2009, the largest employing occupation in the industry was Accountants (81 600), followed by Software and Applications Programmers (40 800), Solicitors (39 200) and Bookkeepers (27 500, see Figure 21).
