January 2016 Manufacturing INDUSTRY PROFILE for Arapahoe & Douglas Counties Colorado WIOA Central Planning Region

Background Manufacturing is vital to a strong Colorado economy, and has great growth potential. Colorado manufacturers are highly innovative and use advanced processes to serve diverse sectors across the Colorado economy - from electronics and consumer products to clean energy systems, aerospace vehicles and medical devices. Manufacturing leaders in the state are also global leaders in advanced materials, as well as food manufacturing and beverage processing. Momentum is building in Colorado around the opportunities for innovation and the creation of highly-skilled, high paying jobs in advanced manufacturing. The industry is diverse and geographically disbursed across the state, with over 5,900 manufacturing firms, more than 120,000 employees, and $16.3 billion in annual economic output. Global shifts in the manufacturing landscape are putting Colorado at the forefront of bringing advanced manufacturing back to the United States. Colorado is focused on job creation in manufacturing through focused recruitment of new manufacturers and the identification of business-tobusiness opportunities for existing manufacturers. Hidden Job Market This chart shows the relationship between the number of job listings versus the number of hires for each of the top occupations in the sector. If there are more listings than hires, it means that the job requires specific skills and credentials, and so most openings for that occupation are listed. An example of an occupation requiring skills, credentials and experience would be the intensive care registered nurse. If there are more hires than listings, it means that most people in those occupations are finding jobs through networking rather than looking at job listings. These are occupations where people with effective personal networking skills have the edge. Occupations with medium strength of hidden job market require both the necessary skills and credentials, and effective personal networking on the part of the job seeker.
