Biomass heating for farms & country estates ESTABLISHED hwenergy.co.uk

Rising heating costs? Find the rural solution to a rural problem Farmers and rural estate owners are turning to biomass heating as a way of cutting fuel costs, bringing properties to optimum warmth, gaining income through RHI and where possible, providing their own fuel. 70% Cost savings against fossil fuels Cost and Carbon Savings: Renewable heat on demand from HWEnergy. We ve been helping clients get the maximum from biomass heating for over 11 years from simple installs to more complex district heating systems linking buildings together. Could you even do this using your own home grown wood? Switching to biomass means: Up to 70% reduction in heating costs An excellent rate of return on investment Reduced CO2 emissions The opportunity to replace fluctuating fossil fuel costs with locally sourced, stable and sustainable fuel Biomass heating systems are backed by over 50 years of development across Europe. Modern systems are extremely user friendly and deliver operating efficiencies of over 90%. Heating and hot water account for over 80% of the total energy demand for a typical building. Biomass heating operates in a similar way to oil or gas fuelled systems but uses wood chip or pellet fuel sourced from sustainable forestry plantations. Installing a wood fuel heating system delivers one of the most effective ways to drive down energy costs and reduce a building s carbon footprint.

Benefit from the RHI with HWEnergy Tariff Name Eligible Technology Boiler size Tier Updated Tarrif (pence/kwh) The UK government launched the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) to encourage take up of biomass, and other forms of renewable heating. The RHI provides an incentive payment on every kwh of heat your biomass heating system generates, ensuring a very attractive return on your investment. HWEnergy were the first company in Scotland to gain RHI accreditation. We are the perfect choice as the biomass heating partner who will ensure you earn income through the RHI scheme. Small Commercial Biomass Medium Commercial Biomass Large Commercial Biomass Solid biomass including solid biomass contained in municipal solid waste (incl. The benefits in numbers The natural fuel source available on your doorstep Biomass heating provides farms and estate businesses with low cost, green heating, using a home grown fuel source. The RHI (Renewable Heat Incentive) has further enhanced this as an investment opportunity. Typical returns on investment are between 12 and 25% The illustrations below show typical examples: Large Country Estate Boiler size: 500kW District Heating Network: 500 metres End Users: Large estate house, 7 cottages and grain dryer Oil usage displaced: 75,000 litres per annum Wood fuel consumption: 250 tonnes of wood chip per annum Biomass Heat Project Investment: 375,000.00 Annual RHI income: 29,000.00 per annum (indexed linked for 20 years) Fuel Saving: 40,000.00 per annum Pay back time: 5 years Farm District Heating Scheme Boiler size: 130kW District Heating Network: 120 metres End Users: Farm house and 6 holiday cottages Oil usage displaced: 20,000 litres per annum Wood fuel consumption: 62 tonnes of wood chip per annum Biomass Heat Project Investment: 150,000.00 Annual RHI income: 15,000.00 per annum (indexed linked for 20 years) Fuel Saving: 10,000.00 per annum Pay back time: 6 years Poultry Farm Boiler size: 199kW packaged system District Heating Network: 50 metres End Users: 2 broiler sheds LPG usage displaced: 80,000 litres per annum Wood fuel consumption: 160 tonnes of wood chip per annum Biomass Heat Project Investment: 210,000.00 Annual RHI income: 23,000.00 per annum (indexed linked for 20 years) Fuel Saving: 16,000.00 per annum Pay back time: 5 years Total annual income and savings: 69,000 per annum Total annual income and savings: 25,000 per annum Total annual income and savings: 39,000 per annum

Biomass heating in action: HWEnergy case studies Since 2003, HWEnergy has completed over 250 commercial scale biomass heating projects. We work in partnership with our clients to develop the right solution and bring you the benefits of biomass heating for years to come: Novar Estate Evanton Building: Ardtalla Lodge and Cottage with 150 metre district heating network Solution: 130kW system with above ground fuel store Fuel Delivery: By front end loader bucket from bulk fuel store Annual Heating Cost Saving: c. 70% (Against oil) Potential Annual RHI Payment: 16,000.00 Annual CO2 saving: c. 70 tonnes

Kincardine Estate Deeside Building: Victorian Castle Solution: 130kW wood chip system with fuel store built into banking Fuel Delivery: Bulk tipped wood chip fuel Annual Heating Cost Saving: c. 70% (against oil) Potential Annual RHI Payment: c. 16,000.00 Annual CO2 saving: c.70 tonnes We were getting increasingly uncomfortable in the castle as we cut down the heating by installing a biomass boiler I can save using 20,000 litres of oil a year

Biomass heating in action: HWEnergy case studies Pluscarden Abbey Elgin, Morayshire Building: Main Abbey and outbuildings Solution: 199kW boiler Fuel Delivery: Own supply wood chip Cost saving against oil: 60% RHI income: 25k per annum CO2 saving: 125 tonnes Years to payback: 6 It is extremely satisfying producing our own fuel and we are making substantial savings

Project Planning: Fuel sourcing and production Producing biomass fuel on farms and estates is a simple and low input process. Existing infrastructure such as sheds and tractors can be used for storage and handling. If you have your own forestry, you have the opportunity to convert low value timber into a highly valuable heating fuel. Harvested round wood should be seasoned for 12 to 18 months to achieve a suitable moisture content (around 15 to 35%). Once seasoned, you can hire a contract chipper to chip this directly into the bulk fuel store. If you don t own forestry, you can buy in round wood or ready processed wood chip fuel, both of which will be available locally. Fuel Storage and Handling A bulk fuel store is required to hold perhaps 3 to 6 months or even a year s supply of processed wood chip fuel. The best means of onward handling and delivering this to the boiler fuel store will be determined by the equipment available, distance to the bulk fuel store and other site specific factors. HWEnergy will help develop the best solution with you on a case by case basis.

Project Planning: Fuel handling Tipping into trough blower. Tipping into underground fuel store. Delivery by front end loader. Tipping into fuel store using a ramp. Rules of thumb for wood fuel 1 tonne of wood chip fuel = 300 litres of heating oil 1 tonne of wood pellet fuel = 450 litres of heating oil 1 tonne of wood chip fuel = 5m3 of loose wood chip 1 tonne of wood pellet fuel = 1.7 m3 of pellets 1 lorry load of seasoned round wood = 20 tonnes Average round wood seasoning time for wood chip fuel production = 12 to 18 months Tipping into fuel store using high lift trailer.

District Heating Your own heating network For biomass heat projects on Farms and Estates, it is common to link several buildings together in a district heating scheme. Houses, offices, swimming pools, poultry sheds, grain drying systems, they can all be linked via pre-insulated pipe-work lain underground. This enables multiple users linked to a centralised heating system. End users can be metered individually, and separately charged for heat usage.

HWEnergy Biomass Heat Cabins: Packaged boiler room and fuel store solutions Our biomass heat cabins come fully equipped and ready for site installation with a pre-fabricated boiler room and integral fuel store. The units are available in a range of outputs, sizes and finishes, and provide a convenient way of installing biomass heating.
