SANITATION MEDIE, GHANA

ABOUT MEDIE Medie is a community based in the Greater Accra Region with a population of 25,000 people. Located 30km North West of Accra with a history of rural farming, it is slowly being consumed by the growing capital city. It is now home to 15 primary schools and 2 senior high schools. The community thrives in arts and culture with strong roots in tradition. Due to the rapid growth of the past 10 years, Medie struggles to implement the infrastructure necessary to sustain it's current population. Sanitation has become a huge problem, with it's waste issues causing severe health concerns.

THE PROBLEM: The increase in population and lack of infrastructure has caused severe sanitation issues. Plastic waste, household waste and human feces are causing severe health issues and environmental problems. Improper disposal of plastic waste Open refuse dumps Open fecal waste washed to lower section of the town 5% understand and use hand washing techniques 90% of Medie practices open defecation Open refuse dumps

CONSEQUENCES Poor awareness of proper sanitation management Lack of engagement in a sustainable plan to address the problem Cholera, Diarrhoea, Typhoid, dysentery and malaria will result in death Productivity reduced due to the effect of faecooral diseases Poor infrastructure means floods in the area destroy buildings and spreads diseases If not addressed it will lead to further problems in the community such as child malnutrition as a result of low productivity; a direct effect on the earnings of the breadwinners.

THE MEDIE VISION an environment where children, parents, and community members work together to make change inspire healthy living and education promote solutions in ways that promote creativity and a passion for the environment cultivate community members to become proud and passionate about their home and city set high expectations for all community members whilst providing individual support create a culture that values sanitation, education and respect support disadvantaged members in the community by working together to provide good sanitation for all

A SOLUTION Move The World has been working alongside Mr. B, the assembly man to explore potential solutions that may prevent an epidemic. Our StreetsmART programme is a community clean up and art project to raise awareness of the importance of keeping the environment clean. We are also working towards providing necessary training to household owners to enable them to construct latrines and hand washing facilities ensuring the proper disposal of waste. The challenge: Medie is becoming a more urban community however in its rapid growth inhabitants remain low income earners resulting in the cost of living higher with lower wages and job opportunities. This lack of resources blocks members the ability to construct household latrines as the cost of supplies is much higher in city areas.

PROPOSED OUTLINE OF ACTIVITIES 2017 PLAN 1. Establish a core group of collaborators by engaging the assembly man, chief and local leaders 2.. Engage corporate partners to establish a core group of collaborators 3. Work with existing NGO's and business' to survey the areas identified and work alongside community leaders 2018 PROGRESS 1. Start the construction of latrines in Sections 13 2. Provide support to team leaders and community members 3. Advance progress in all areas of the community sanitation plan 4. Enhance communication with partner business' 2019 PRESERVE 1. Complete construction in Sections 46 2. Provide support to leadership through collaboration with partner business' and sponsors 3. Implement sustainability plan which includes ongoing education and development of sanitation and hygeine care
