WELCOME Insitu Stabilization of soils with High Density resins under and existing culvert URETEK ICR Mid Atlantic APWA-NC Storm water Management Conference Chris Gibby 336-755-4982
URETEK HDPF History 1975 URETEK Finland develops high-density polymers TM 1979 The URETEK Method patented 1988 URETEK USA, Inc. granted exclusive rights to United States and Mexico 2000 ICR Dealer Network Set Up TM 2003 Deep Injection Process patented
Introduction to Expanding Polyurethane Three Broad Categories Hydrophilic, Hydrophobic and Hydroinsensitive (URETEK 486 Star) Two Component Polymerization Process Injected as a liquid, chemical reaction expands and changes the liquid into a solid
Advantages to Using URETEK Polymers Minimal Disruption No Digging / 5/8 diameter holes Develops 90% strength in 15 minutes Fully cured in 24 hours Return to service in 1 hour Excellent Chemical Resistance Longterm Structural and Dimensional Stability 10 year material warranty Environmentally Benign
The introduction to the West Knox Street Project Insitu Stabilization of soils with High Density resins under and existing culvert 1) Designation of the problem and identifying the most cost effective repair 2) Design of the repair, based on the environment and the degraded condition of the culvert 3) Planning, and protecting the environment, Home and population in a historic district 4) Implementation of the repair 5) Effects on the environment 6) Clean Up and restoration of the site
Step # 1 - Designation of the problem and identifying the most cost effective repair NCDOT Inspection report found a 2.5 Void found under the culvert!!!
Step # 1 - Designation of the problem and identifying the most cost effective repair Sink Holes on Street level 2.5 Void under culvert
Step # 1 - Designation of the problem and identifying the most cost effective repair NCDOT Inspection report also showed failures in the aging concrete of the culvert
Step # 2 - Design of the repair, based on the environment and the degraded condition of the culvert Uretek Completed DCP test on the site to help determine the extent of the soil problems under the culvert Weight of Hammer Soils
Step # 2 - Design of the repair, based on the environment and the degraded condition of the culvert Existing culvert building the 40 s-50 s 24 to 30 void under culvert W.O.H. Soils under culvert
Step # 2 - Design of the repair, based on the environment and the degraded condition of the culvert
Step # 3 - Planning, and protecting the environment, Home and population in a historic district (20 ) wide road with existing neighborhood and pedestrian walkway Culvert Site: West Knox St. Durham, NC
Step # 4 - Implementation of the repair Installation of temporary coffer dam Installation of sheet Pile wall
Step # 4 - Implementation of the repair URETEK Patented Deep Injection TM
Step # 4 - Implementation of the repair URETEK Patented Deep Injection TM

Laser levels are used to monitor so that no unwanted movement occurs
Step # 4 - Implementation of the repair After Before Before
Step # 4 - Implementation of the repair Epoxy Crack Injection
Step # 4 - Implementation of the repair Joint Sealant flexible joint Finished Permanent coffer dam, up steam and down stream of the culvert
Step # 5 - Effects on the environment Uretek 486 is NSF 61 certified and has minimal impact on any environment, Uretek returned the site to its original condition
Step # 6 - Clean Up and restoration of the site
What was the Cost? - The estimated cost to rip out the existing culvert and replace it was approximately $3,000,000.00 Dollars! This will have closed the road for 8 to 10 weeks and disrupted all of the local residence. -Uretek completed this repair, including the sheet pile coffer dam, epoxy crack inject and stabilization of the soils under the culvert for a cost of less then $500,000.00. we never closed the walking trails or the road above. This work was completed in less then 30 days!
Less than 30 days, from start to finish
