JOB DESCRIPTION 1. POST TITLE: Senior Barista 2. BASE: Princess Royal Hospital 3. DEPARTMENT: Facilities Catering Services 4. MANAGER RESPONSIBLE TO: Catering Manager 5. HOURS: As Per Contract 6. POST PURPOSE/SUMMARY To be responsible for supervising the day to day operations of the cross site Café Bistro outlets. To ensure that a fast high standard of customer service is provided throughout our cross site Café Bistro outlets by effectively supervising staff and engaging with customers to ensure their repeat business. 7. ORGANISATIONAL POSITION Please refer to organisation chart. 8. SCOPE AND RANGE 8.1 Primarily responsible for supervising the day to day operations of the cross site Café Bistro outlets. 8.2 Ensuring that a high standard customer focused service is provided in all of the Café Bistro outlets. 8.3 Will report directly to the Catering Manager with line responsibility to the relevant Site Catering Operations Manager. 8.4 Will be required to ensure high standards of food safety and quality are maintained at all times and in accordance with Food Safety Legislation and HACCP Food Safety Management System. 9. MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 9.1 Management Approach 9.1.1 Ensure that a professional approach is taken to ensure the effective delivery of the services provided in the Café Bistro outlets. 9.1.2 To ensure that subordinate staff responsibilities and objectives are clearly defined and that they are developed and supported to make an effective contribution to the corporate objectives. This includes carrying out departmental staff appraisals in line with trust policy. 9.1.3 Develop and maintain effective channels of communication to ensure staff are kept informed in a timely and appropriate manner.
9.1.4 When requested to assist in implementing changes to enhance performance within the Café Bistro outlets. 9.1.5 Facilitate excellent communication and co-operation within the team. 9.2 Planning and Performance Review 9.2.1 To assist the Catering Manager with the implementation of cross site operational plans for the Café Bistro function. 9.2.2 To contribute to the agreement of service and financial objectives for the areas under control. 9.2.3 To assist the Catering Manager in monitoring the performance of the cross site Café Bistro outlets against their agreed objectives and will be responsible for taking corrective action where necessary. 9.2.4 To assist the Catering Manager to review the success of Café Bistro, evaluate and when requested implement options to enhance performance. 9.2.5 To support the Catering Manager with the development of the service in collaboration with appropriate members of staff and to ensure that service provision matches agreed standards. 9.2.6 To ensure the most appropriate use of resources taking into account competing priorities and performance targets. 9.2.7 To assist in investigations into HR issues, Health & Safety Incidents and Complaints when necessary. 9.3 Resource Management 9.3.1 To assist the Catering Manager in implementing budget and expenditure controls, including the achievement of any cost improvement plans. 9.3.2 To implement agreed initiatives to maximise income within the Café Bistro outlets. 9.4 Human Resources 9.4.1 To supervise, with support from the Catering Manager, all cross site Café Bistro staff. 9.4.2 To implement agreed performance review and objective setting measures, including all staff development and training needs. 9.4.3 To ensure compliance with IWL Standards within the Café Bistro outlets. 9.4.4 To promote a positive employee relationship environment, communication and involvement. 9.4.5 To undertake first line sickness, grievance and disciplinary meetings in accordance with the Trust s Policies and Procedures.
9.4.6 To assist the Catering Manager in effectively managing the sickness absence levels and addressing the cause of absence, whilst acknowledging a commitment to supporting staff as far as is reasonable. 9.4.7 To carry out checks on staff time sheets to ensure correctly completed, in line with departmental procedures, before submitting to the Catering Manager for final approval. 9.5 Developments To assist the Catering Manager in, identifying potential opportunities in the development of the Café Bistro outlets and implementing identified solutions. 10. SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES 10.1 To be responsible for the day to day supervision of all aspects of the cross site Café Bistro outlets. 10.2 To work closely with Facilities colleagues at times. 10.3 Responsible for day to day operational decisions and delegation of work to subordinate staff. 10.4 Plans schedules of work and makes adjustments where necessary. 10.5 To assist the Catering Manager to regularly review and update menus/range offered. 10.6 To liaise with the Hygiene and Compliance Officer/Food Safety Advisor and to ensure compliance with NHS Controls Assurance Standards and all the current Food Safety Legislation, relevant Guidelines for Good Catering Practice and adherence with the Trust s Food Safety Management System. 10.7 To ensure compliance with the Health & Safety at work act 1974 and any regulations made under this Act, and adherence with the Trust s Health & Safety Policy undertaking risk assessments in the workplace, taking and reviewing corrective action with full documentation throughout the process. 10.8 To ensure all necessary HACCP, Food Safety and Health & Safety documentation is accurately completed, implementing corrective actions when needed. 10.9 To assist the Catering Manager in undertaking Catering Surveys, service and waste audits and implementing corrective action. 10.10 To assist the Catering Manager to ensure the Food Policy is adhered to. 10.11 To produce departmental rotas, ensuring the department has sufficient resources to operate effectively. 10.12 To ensure staff within Café Bistro are customer focused and that a high level of customer service is provided at all times. 10.13 To ensure Baristas have good product knowledge and service skills necessary to maximise sales through both high standard of service and up selling.
11. SYSTEMS AND EQUIPMENT 11.1 Ensure the correct, use whilst maintaining cleanliness, of a variety of equipment including chilled display units, mechanical dish washer, Turbo Chef Oven, blenders, ice machines, coffee machines, tills, electronic probes and knives etc. 11.2 Ensure all equipment is safe and clean before use whilst ensuring the correct use of cleaning materials. 11.3 Report any equipment or building defects to the Senior Barista or Catering Operations Manager. 11.4 Will be required to use Departmental IT Systems as appropriate, including POS till. 12. DECISIONS, JUDGEMENTS AND FREEDOM TO ACT 12.1 To work with a degree of initiative, within predetermined guidelines, and deal with matters independently where they can, reporting to the Senior Barista as necessary. 12.2 To work in accordance with Trust s Policies and Procedures, including Food Safety Legislation, COSHH, Fire, Manual Handling, Health & Safety and attend Statutory Training. 13. COMMUNICATION AND RELATIONSHIPS 13.1 Will be required to communicate effectively with a wide range of people, including colleagues, other Trust staff, visitors and contractors. 13.2 Will be required to communicate effectively when dealing with verbal complaints from both patient and commercial customers. 13.3 Will need to communicate with patients/visitors with language/hearing barriers on an ad hoc basis. 13.4 Demonstrate duties to new starters. 13.5 To effectively communicate between shifts and to colleagues both verbally during hand over and recording written entries in the outlets handover book. 13.6 Complete Food Safety and Cleaning Documentation to meet the requirements of the Trust s Food Safety Policy. 13.7 Communicate with the Environmental Health Officer and other External Auditors during official inspections. 14. PHYSICIAL, MENTAL AND EMOTIONAL DEMANDS OF THE POST 14.1 Frequently required to exert moderate physical effort for long periods of time, e.g. lifting heavy equipment and food, pulling and pushing heavy food trolleys, washing up. Occasional requirement to exert intense physical effort for short periods [e.g. trolleys may be pushed the full length of the hospital corridor]. Some of the movements are repetitive and heavy. Will be required to stand for long periods of time. 14.2 Frequently required to concentrate within the work pattern, when e.g. using machinery, during service, recording temperatures and handling chemicals.
14.3 Works with concentration to meet strict deadlines in a busy retail environment. 14.4 Need to be literate, numerate and able to recognise colours and have the ability to understand instruction. 14.5 Will be required to work under pressure and to be able to multi task to delivery a fast efficient service. 14.6 To travel between RSH and PRH sites to cover various Café Bistro outlets and required. 14.7 To work flexibly as appropriate to meet the needs of the service. 14.8 On occasions may experience abusive patients/customers. 15. INFECTION PREVENTION AND CONTROL The prevention and management of acquired infection is a key priority for the Trust. Any breach of infection control policies is a serious matter which may result in disciplinary action. As an employee of the Trust you have a responsibility to: Ensure that your work methods are compliant with the Trust s agreed policies and procedures and do not endanger other people or yourself; and Be aware of infection prevention and control policies, practices and guidelines appropriate for your duties and you must follow these at all times to maintain a safe environment for patients, visitors and staff; and Maintain an up to date knowledge of infection prevention and control, policies, practices and procedures through attendance at annual mandatory updates and on-going continuing professional development; and Challenge poor infection prevention and control practices of others and to report any breaches using appropriate Trust mechanisms [e.g. incident reporting policy]. 17. INFORMATION GOVERNANCE The Trust is committed to compliance with Information Governance standards to ensure that all information is handled legally, securely, efficiently and effectively. You are required to comply with the Trust s Information Governance Policies and Standards. Failure to do so may result in action being taken in accordance with the Trust s Disciplinary Procedure. Whilst you are employed by the Trust you will come into contact with confidential information and data relating to the work of the Trust, its patients or employees. Disclosure of Information The unauthorised use or disclosure of information relating to the Trust s activities or affairs, the treatment of patients or the personal details of an employee, will normally be considered a serious disciplinary offense which could result in dismissal. Upon leaving the Trust s employment and at any time thereafter you must not take advantage of or disclose confidential information that you learnt in the course of your employment. Unauthorised disclosure of any of this information may be deemed as a criminal offence. If you are found to have permitted the unauthorised of any such information, you and the Trust may face legal action. Information Quality and Records Management You must ensure that all information handled by you is accurate and kept up-to-date and you must comply with the Trust s recording, monitoring, validation and improvement schemes and processes. Professional Standards and Performance Review As an employee of the Trust you have a responsibility to: Participate in statutory and mandatory training as appropriate for the post; and Maintain consistently high personal and professional standards and act in accordance with the relevant professional code of conduct; and Take responsibility for the maintenance and improvement of personal and professional competence and to encourage that of colleagues and subordinates; and Participate in the Trust s appraisal processes including identifying performance standards for the post, personal objective setting and the creation of a personal development plan in line with the KSF outline for the post.
