1. Transport and sustainable development: it is not only about environment! Transport for sustainable development Lack of transport is a barrier for seeking medical help, going to the supermarket and attending education. Every year, more than 120 thousand people are killed on roads in the ECE region! Lack of Social transport is a About 30% Economic Environment Access Inclusion Safety Security Health barrier to getting a job for 38% of the jobseekers in the UK. Investments in innovative transport technologies and infrastructure increases private sector productivity. Growth Employment Prosperity Competitiveness Choice of total energy consumption is from transport. UN Regulations resulted in an reduction of 95-97 % of pollutants CO, HC and NOx from new passenger cars. Climate change Air quality Noise Land use Waste Slide 2

A1. UN project on inland transport CO 2 emissions 3 year project funded by UNDA 5 Regional Commissions involved Launched January 2011 Develop tool for the assessment of CO 2 emissions Freely available Raise global awareness for actions and measures needed for climate change mitigation and adaptation Assist governments establishing transport policy and mitigation strategies Promote the tool to pave the way for the future inland transport system (ForFITS) Slide 14
A2. Where we are Release of funds Official letter to UN Regional Commissions, Foreign ministers New website (project document, flyer, etc.) Questionnaire on inland transport CO 2 emissions Preparing international expert meeting Global status report 2 nd half of the year Slide 15
A3. What we need Nomination of national focal points on inland transport CO 2 emissions Respond to the Questionnaire on CO 2 emissions available at: http://live.unece.org/trans/theme_forfits.html Participate in the international expert meeting (October 2011) Slide 16
B1. Market Fuel Quality Objective: develop recommendations for fuel quality to enable that vehicles use in their daily service fuels with specific characteristics relating to the vehicle emission levels and engine technology type. In 2008, the World Forum WP.29 set up an informal group on FQ Two step approach: first lead and sulphur, then other parameters (e.g. manganese, iron and phosphorus for gasoline and ash for diesel fuel), including gaseous fuels and bio-fuels First set of guidelines expected to be adopted in November 2011 New Annex to the Consolidated Resolution on the Construction of Vehicles (R.E.3) Work of the second step is pending subject to the decision of the World Forum WP.29 in November 2011 Slide 17
C1. UNECE strategy to deploy ITS globally Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) may have considerable impacts on safety and environment: Variable road signs (fluidity, traffic management systems) Telematics (tracking, automatic emergency call) Inland waterway Information Systems Digital tachograph, e-cmr Vehicles Adaptive driver assistance systems such as cruise control, AEBS, LDWS,etc. Slide 18
C2. UNECE Road Map on ITS Designing g tomorrows transport today Release of Road Map: mark the milestone from research to implementation Lay down concrete actions to be performed Overcome lack of harmonization Deploy ITS globally Slide 19
