Baraga Forest Management Unit Compartment Review Presentation Compartment #11 Entry Year: 2014 Compartment Acreage: 3353 County: Baraga Revision Date: 7/18/2012 Examiner: Fred Hansen, John Turunen Legal Description: T49N R34W Sec 15, 16, 17, 20, 21, 27, 28, 29, 31, 32, 33; T48N R34W Sec 2, 5 Identified Planning Goals ( Management Area or RMU, if applicable): Baraga Plains Management Goals: To maintain a healthy; sustainable forest with special consideration to wildlife habitat, fisheries habitat, and recreational needs. Soil and Topography: The compartment is level to rolling. There area numerous small potholes to the south. Soils are Grayling sand, Kinross muck, Croswell sand, Kallio cobbly silt loam, and Arnheim mucky silt loam. Ownership Patterns, Development, and Land Use in and Around the Compartment: The area around Big Lake is developed summer homes, with small private ownership s to the south and east. The lands to the north and west are in public ownership. Unique, Natural Features: The Sturgeon River borders the south of the compartment and Big Lake is part of the compartment. Archeological, Historical, and Cultural Features: None listed. Special Management Designations or Considerations: A series of fields and surrounding land within the compartment are designated for waterfowl management. Big Lake State Forest Campground is in the compartment. Watershed and Fisheries Considerations: Big Lake is shallow, reflecting low ground water. Wildlife Habitat Considerations: Compartment 11 is found within the Baraga Plains Management Area. This area is an outwash plain located in west central Baraga County which is dominant by barrens and dry northern forests. Major forest cover types include Jack, Aspen and Grass Openings. The Baraga Plains

management area provides a unique opportunity within the Western Upper Peninsula due to the size and spatial arrangement of compartments within the management area and adjacency to USFS ownership within a single outwash plain system. By using management strategies that closely mimic natural fire disturbance regimes this area provides some of the best opportunities for managing for Kirtland s Warbler in the Western Upper Peninsula. It also contains large wildlife openings that are actively managed for Canada geese by regular mowing and planting prescriptions. Managing for mature stands of short-needled conifers is also a priority, in this MA and is beneficial for Spruce Grouse a featured species and in turn black-backed woodpeckers which have similar habitat requirements. Black-backed woodpeckers are a species of special concern which specialize in eating insect larvae in rotted trees. The following have been identified, as featured species for the Baraga Plains Management Area: Black Bear, Canada Goose, Eastern Bluebird, Kirtland's Warbler, and Spruce Grouse. Mineral Resource and Development Concerns and/or Restrictions: Surface sediments consist of glacial sand and gravel and postglacial alluvium and fine-textured glacial till. There is insufficient data to determine the glacial drift thickness. The Precambrian Michigamme Formation underlies the compartment. There is not a current economic use for the Michigamme. The nearest gravel pit is two and one-half miles to the east and potential appears to be limited. Four miles to the east are abandoned iron mines (Taylor) and a graphite pit. There are no lands currently leased for metallic exploration. There is no economic oil and gas production in the UP Vehicle Access: Most of this compartment is accessible from established road systems. Survey Needs: Survey work will be needed to facilitate timber harvest activities. Recreational Facilities and Opportunities: Big Lake State Forest Campground. Part of the North Country hiking trail and part of the Baraga Plains ORV trail cross the compartment. Fire Protection: There is a higher potential for wildfire in this compartment that many others. There is an urban interface with the camps around Big Lake being surrounded by jack pine forest types. Additional Compartment Information: The following reports from the Inventory are attached: Total Acres by and Age Class Summary s No Limiting Factors s With Limiting Factors Details (Forested and Nonforested) Dedicated and Special Conservation Areas

The following information is displayed, where pertinent, on the attached compartment maps: Base feature information, stand boundaries, cover types, and numbers treatments Details on the road access system
