PhD in INGEGNERIA DEI MATERIALI / MATERIALS ENGINEERING - 34th cycle Research Field: A STUDY OF THE MECHANICAL BEHAVIOR OF RUBBERS AND THEIR COMPOSITES UNDER COMPLEX LOADING CONDITIONS Monthly net income of PhDscholarship (max 36 months) 1325.0 In case of a change of the welfare rates during the three-year period, the amount could be modified. Context of the research activity Motivation and objectives of the research in this field Exploiting different materials behaviours in a composite structure may allow obtaining new and desirable performances. However, this is possible through a design process based on a deep knowledge of the components characteristic behaviour. The present research focusses on rubber based composites. Its objectives are the investigation of the mechanical behaviour of rubbers under complex loading conditions, and of how this behaviour is transferred in composite, in which addition of a stiff reinforcement phase may induce strong anisotropies and load coupling effects. Methods and techniques that will be developed and used to carry out the research The mechanical behaviour of rubber matrices and composites will be investigated through both monoaxial and multiaxial testing. Temperature will be adopted as a probe to assess the selected elastomers viscoelasticity. Matrix and composite microstructure will be characterized mainly by microscopy, and micro computer tomography. Educational objectives The PhD student is expected to learn how to develop an autonomous research, resorting to state of the art experimental techniques, in cooperation with other researchers from and outside the research group. This objective will end up also with the acquisition of scientific and technical skills on mechanical and physical behaviour or rubbers and rubber based composites 1 / 3
