REGSA International Conference 2014: Renewable Energy, Energy Efficiency and Sustainable Developme Florianopolis, Santa Catarina, Brazil, 6 to 8 May 2014 Official languages of the Conference: Portuguese and English The access to electrical energy plays a fundamental role in socio-economic development, especially when access to energy is directly linked to the reduction of poverty. The production and use of local renewable energy not only makes an important contribution to local economic development, but also results in many environmental benefits. Across many regions in South America, the lack of rural electrification strongly impedes upon economic expansion. Although most countries in South America have strategies and specific and well-defined plans to enhance the production of renewable energy, their implementation is threatened by a wide range of legal, financial, political and technological problems. The project "Promoting Renewable Electricity Generation in South America" (REGSA) is an attempt to address this problem. Funded by the European Union's "Thematic Programme for the Environmental and Sustainable Management of Natural Resources, including Energy", the 1 / 10

REGSA project fosters the promotion of renewable energy in rural electrification, whilst simultaneously facilitating close cooperation between local stakeholders in Brazil, Bolivia and Chile. Sustainable development is not a fixed harmonious state, but a process of transformation in which existing resources may be used, while also considering the needs of future generations. Sustainable development may be achieved by means of activities that are ecologically sound, economically feasible, socially fair and culturally diversified. The central theme of the conference will be renewable energy, energy efficiency and sustainable development. Aims The aims of the REGSA International Conference 2014: Renewable Energy, Energy Efficiency and Sustainable Development are: 1. To give universities around the world the opportunity to present their work (curriculum innovation, research, activities, practical projects) on sustainable development, energy efficiency and renewable energy 2. To promote the exchange of information, ideas and experiences acquired during the execution of projects from successful initiatives and good practices in renewable energy generation and use, especially in rural areas 3. To discuss methodological approaches and projects which aim to integrate the issue of sustainable and renewable energy in communities and rural areas, support projects and implement plans of action on renewable energy 4. To highlight the importance of innovation in the generation of technologies and in the promotion of sustainable development Last but not least, a further aim of the event will be to document and disseminate the experiences available today. To this purpose, a book will be produced which features selected papers presented at the conference. The acceptance of papers is subject to peer-review, and authors are requested to make sure their manuscripts are of the highest international quality. 2 / 10
