Building community resilience through DRR

Gambia DRR Intervention GRCS Spanish bilateral cooperation Health units at community level Portable drinking water and sanitation- 10 bore hole wells Vegetable gardening Training of women on production and preservation techniques and Management of income generated from the vegetable garden.

DRR in schools Provision of portable water Sanitation ( construction of latrines and hygiene promotion) Drawing completion of DRR information Plating of moringa olifera tree for nutritional intake of student Provision of portable solar lamps to 100 student

DRR with refugee and their host Food for work Community wood lots- prevent deforestation, income generation and used as wind breakers Community farms- food reserve for emergency response during disasters Road construction and rehabilitation- access to agricultural farmers and markets Women gardens- income generation and nutritional intake at household Shelter- appropriate accommodation

DRR with communities Livelihood training Soap making, tie & dye Community gardens Support agricultural production- seeds, fertiliser and training Training the communities- On community DRR initiatives to reduce risks Community early warning- Risk mapping, monitoring vulnerabilities and sensitised community members Early warning early action- sharing information on rain fall and weather for informed decision on crop cultivation

Valued added of DRR interventions Increased food production in refugee hosting families Increased earning and income for women in 56 communities implementing community gardens with vegetables production and livelihood activities. (tie & dye). Reduced hunger in food insecurity operation areas through the provision of the food basket for 4 months Reduced incidence of severe malnutrition among children in operation areas. Prevent flooding in communities and improve food production Improved environment sanitation due to increased acknowledge of communities on the relationship between proper sanitation and community s health

Valued added of DRR interventions Supported farmers initiative to increase the production of groundnut a major cash crop which ultimately increased their income and living standard. The provision of solar lamps to the student and labour ward contributed in reducing the risk of household and bush fires, poor lighting of labour wards improved. Provision of hand pumps wells has increased access to potable water, reduction of water borne and water related diseases Constructed VIP latrines contributed in the reduced incidence of gastrointestinal diseases in the communities. The increased capacity of the volunteers contributes to the NS strength, to assess, manage and mitigate DRR Save lives and improving health and wellbeing Give vulnerable the right to a honourable living

New IFRC approach on Disaster interventions factoring DRR- Twin- Track Linked disaster response to recovery and resilience Support the food basket of 15,800 people Support 42,859 people with seed and fertiliser Support 4 communities with women gardens- Perimeter fencing, Appropriate tech water source, training and sourcing of market

BURKINA FASO DRR interventions Food security Water and sanitation Community awareness

introduction The CRBF strategy to adapt drought : A community based action intended to help vulnerable households to fight against food insecurity due to the effects of CC, lack of nutrutional rules knowledge, and the increasing prices on the market.

The strategic objectives of the CRBF Support and reinforce environmental education and land recuperation activities in exposed communities. Improve the socioeconomic and sanitary living conditions of the most vulnerable household The global aim of the NS s intervention is : To contribute to the reduction of vulnerability Reinforce the red cross contribution as an important actor in the food security Increase household resilience in front of the effects of the poverty and food insecurity

Community based food security actions Crossing food security activities: women gardens and community based nutritional education 19,000 families are sensitized on malnutrition in 2012 17 communities in the Sahel region receive support on seeds production, women gardens, cc training, environmental protection awareness, associative organization.

Community based water and sanitation Spanish RC and Echo Rehabilitation of 12 boreholes and constructed 30 new ones in the Sahel region Building family 5872 latrines in the Sahel Sensitization on hygienic habits in 5 provinces

Building resilience with the communities EWS developed with 10 provinces with high risk potential (flood, epidemic, pastors and farmers conflicts, food insecurity) VCA implemented in 5 provinces Simulation trainings ( fire, population movement )

Value added Two seasons vegetable productions : a response to the fail of rainy season crops. Diversification through the introduction of fruit trees, moringa and sweet potatoes in the Sahel gardens Village committees of nutrition in 9 provinces The main target for the DRR intervention is women
