KOROK INTERTENANCY SYSTEMS 2018 FOR TERRACED HOUSING AND APARTMENTS CBI 5113 FEB 2018 KOROK

KOROK INTERTENANCY SYSTEMS 2018 FOR TERRACED HOUSING AND APARTMENTS SECURE, QUIET, FLEXIBLE. KOROK Intertenancy Systems 2018 provide instructions for specifying and installing KOROK panels, creating highly secure inter-tenancy walls that are fast to construct. SECURE KOROK panels consist of a steel shell filled with aerated concrete. Having a solid wall provides peace of mind to occupants in the knowledge that they are physically separated from neighbouring tenancies. QUIET KOROK panels offer superior mass over traditional timber and plasterboard systems resulting in enhanced sound attenuation, particularly in the more invasive lower frequencies. This means that residents are comfortable in their own space without the intrusion of noise from other occupancies. FLEXIBLE Because KOROK panels provide all the fire protection you need, you can run electrical and plumbing services on the inter-tenancy wall, without the need for special penetration seals around each pipe or light switch. This allows you the flexibility of placing a TV and kitchen where you want, and the ability to hang pictures on the wall without compromising the fire and noise resistance of the Inter-tenancy wall..2

INTRODUCTION USE ONLY THE CURRENT SPECIFICATION This publication may be superseded by a new publication. KOROK (NZ) Ltd accepts no liability for reliance upon publications that have been superseded. If you are unsure whether this is the current publication, visit www.korok.com or call 0800 773 777. BEWARE OF SUBSTITUTION All KOROK systems have been designed and tested to ensure they are suitable for New Zealand conditions and provide specific resistance to fire and noise transmission. As such, only tested KOROK panels and components can be used in the construction of each KOROK system, ensuring that the finished wall will meet its performance specification PURPOSE KOROK Intertenancy Systems 2018 is intended to provide systems that physically separate spaces, providing secure divisional walls and intertenancy sound and fire transmission resistance. KOROK Intertenancy Systems 2018 are separate systems for residential and apartment intertenancy walls. Please ensure that the system selected is identified as being appropriate for the location it is being installed in. SCOPE OF USE New Zealand Building Code (NZBC) compliance The NZBC sets out both the legal minimum sound transmission between tenancies (Clause G6) and minimum levels of fire resistance (Clauses C3 and C6). The KOROK Intertenancy Systems 2018 literature provides guidance on the specification and construction of systems that will both meet and exceed those minimum levels. However, designers should consider the comfort of occupants when selecting a system that will satisfy the occupants expectations when using the space rather than the minimum required by law. NZBC Clause B2 Durability Under normal conditions of dry internal use KOROK Intertenancy Systems have a serviceable life in excess of 50 years and satisfy the requirements of NZBC Clause B2 Durability. NZBC Clauses C3 - Spread of Fire KOROK Intertenancy Systems can be used to provide passive fire protection in accordance with the requirements of NZBC Clause 3 Spread of fire NZBC Clause C4 Structural Stability During Fire In order to satisfy the requirements of NZBC Clause 4 Structural Stability during Fire, designers must ensure that fire rated elements are supported by elements having at least the same Fire Resistance Rating (FRR). Collapse of elements having a lesser FRR shall not cause the consequential collapse of elements required to have a higher FRR. System components that have not been specified (e.g. framing in universal systems) may be used subject to the normal approval process. NZBC Clause C6 - Structural Stability Compliance with (NZBC) Clause C6 Structural Stability with specific reference to Acceptable Solution C/AS2 for Risk Group SM. NZBC Clause G6 Airborne and Impact Sound KOROK Intertenancy Systems, both meet and exceed the minimum requirements outlined in NZBC Clause G6. Consideration should be given to both the minimum requirements and the comfort of occupants..4

INTRODUCTION TRANSPORT Generally the lengths of KOROK are delivered to site by long trailers and articulated trucks. Therefore access to and on building sites must be adequate to accommodate these types of vehicles. Off loading and site storage or cranage onto site is the responsibility of the client and suitable arrangements should be made prior to delivery. KOROK products are packed and protected against damage during delivery but care must be exercised during unloading. Lengths must be adequately supported during unloading and where packs are broken and panels lifted by hand, care must be taken not to slide or drag the panel and scrape the finished surfaces of the product. HANDLING AND STORAGE KOROK panels must be stored under clean, dry and ventilated conditions. Where it is necessary for KOROK Panels to be stored onsite they should be placed away from the building operations, if possible, in the order in which they will be fixed. Storage should provide a firm and dry base, protected from the weather, accidental damage and moisture. The panels should be stored on bearers no more than 2000mm apart. Stack heights are limited to 10 pallets. Adequate cover must be provided and water must not lie on or between the panel surfaces, which will cause staining and degradation of the surface coatings. If pallets become wet the KOROK panels should without delay be separated, wiped with a clean cloth and stacked so that the circulation of air will complete the drying process. ON SITE HANDLING AND STORAGE Handle KOROK panels carefully prior to installation. Avoid knocks, bumps and scratches, which may lead to maintenance issues later. Store KOROK panels on site flat or in their pallets and ensure that KOROK panels are dry prior to installation. STRIPPABLE FILM KOROK panels will be supplied with a plastic film to provide protection during handling and transportation. This film has a very short life when exposed to exterior conditions and must be removed immediately prior to installation. It must not be left lying in the sun or at the site for more than a few hours. Failure to remove the film in a timely manner will lead to difficulties with its removal. CUTTING OF KOROK PANELS Its recommended that KOROK panels are cut using a Hilti DCH300 Electric Concrete Cutter with dust removal system. Hot swarf should not be allowed to contact pre-painted or galvanized sheet material. Any grinding, welding or drillings carried out above the wall level should be done with the panels appropriately covered to avoid swarf contact. Failure to do so will result in unsightly staining of the surface as the metal particles rust or oxidise. INSTALLATION Specific design advice should be sought where KOROK is to be subject to point loads or other distributed loading other than wind. Ensure connection between KOROK panels are properly made. Ensure connections of KOROK panels to the structure are adequate. DEFINITIONS STC Sound Transmission Class is derived from an ASTM standard test procedure which rates the airborne sound transmission loss through building elements such as walls and ceilings. db loss is measured at a 1/3 octave range between 125Hz and 4000Hz. The minimum requirement for residential Intertenancy is 55 STC. FRR Fire Resistance Rating is derived from a laboratory furnace test which gives a value in minutes for Structural adequacy, Integrity, and Insulation. Depending on design, all three may not be relevant to the building element. CLEANING At the completion of the job and at the finish of each day s work, it is essential that the completed area be thoroughly cleaned of all swarf, rivet stems, nails drillings and screws, etc. normally associated with the installation of metal panels..5

STRUCTURAL MAXIMUM PERMISSIBLE HEIGHT The total height of the central KOROK panel in the KOROK Intertenancy wall must not exceed 14.0 metres. SUPPORT BRACKET INSTALLATION KOROK aluminium brackets are fixed into panel joints and spaced at no more than 3m vertically and 500mm horizontally on both sides of the KOROK panels. FRAMING Timber framing must comply with NZS3604:2011 Timber-framed buildings or be specifically designed by a suitably qualified engineer to meet NZBC requirements. DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS FIRE KOROK Intertenancy Systems provide a range of Fire Resistance Ratings (FRR) (as outlined in the Summary Table). In the case of a fire, the wall frame on the non-fire side of the KOROK Intertenancy wall maintains structural adequacy and provides lateral stability. As the primary fire barrier, the KOROK panels are located in the cavity between the frames, the system permits easy inclusion of services such as water and waste pipes, electrical and communications cables, as long as the KOROK panels are not penetrated. Fire rated service penetrations are allowed through KOROK panels in the roof space. The FRR of the KOROK panel system relies on the central KOROK Intertenancy wall and not on the performance of the gypsum plasterboard linings. Although penetrations through the plasterboard linings do not affect the FRR of the KOROK Intertenancy system, they may affect noise control performance (see NOISE CONTROL below). To maintain the FRR of the KOROK Intertenancy System use only the specified KOROK aluminium brackets to attach the KOROK panels to framing members. The KOROK aluminium bracket is designed to melt in the event of a fire, which allows the framing members on the fire side to fall away, protecting the adjoining dwellings. NOISE CONTROL The KOROK Intertenancy System has been independently tested to ensure compliance with the NZBC requirements for multi-unit residential construction. Service pipes must not be in contact with the KOROK panels. Small penetrations through the plasterboard linings are permitted, these may be placed back-to-back and include: Normal residential electrical switches and power points Data, communications or electrical cables Copper, galvanised steel, or plastic water or waste water pipes of up to 50mm nominal diameter Baths and shower bases Wall mounted cabinets or vanities DETAIL FOR PLASTERBOARD FIXING INSTRUCTIONS All plasterboard linings should be fixed in accordance with the manufacturers fixing instructions..6

TERRACED HOUSING INTERTENANCY SYSTEMS HOW THE SYSTEM WORKS Conventional framed wall systems rely on the internal linings for fire-resistance. Penetrating these linings potentially destroys the fire-rated barrier. In the KOROK Intertenancy System the main fire barrier located between frames is designed to protect the structure on the side opposite the fire. KOROK aluminium brackets attach the KOROK panels to both frames. As the fire increases, the aluminium brackets on the fire side melt, allowing the structure on the fire side to detach. This leaves the KOROK panels supported by aluminium brackets connected to framing on the non-fire side. Before Fire KOROK aluminium brackets at 500mm centres horizontally fixed to framing both sides of the KOROK Intertenancy wall During Fire KOROK aluminium brackets on the fire side melt After Fire The adjoining occupancy is protected by the KOROK Intertenancy wall supported by KOROK aluminium brackets on the non-fire side wall.9

TERRACED HOUSING INTERTENANCY SYSTEMS INSTALLATION Installation of the KOROK Intertenancy Systems requires the attachment of the KOROK panels to framing members using KOROK aluminium brackets. The timber framing is set out to allow for the required clearances on both sides of the KOROK Intertenancy wall. brackets to that side. When the timber framing on the other side is completed the KOROK aluminium brackets are installed on that side. The sequence of construction should be planned to accommodate the progressive erection of the KOROK panels. After the timber framing on one side of the KOROK Intertenancy wall is completed, the KOROK Intertenancy wall is installed and attached with KOROK aluminium The KOROK panels can also be installed after both the timber walls have already been erected. However, this will not be as efficient. STEP 1 Apply fire rated sealant between structure and KOROK C-track On the first level, place a 6mm bead of fire rated sealant between the floor and the KOROK C-track on the centre line of the wall position. 20mm 400mm STEP 2 Install ixings Fix the KOROK C-track at maximum centres of 400mm with 6.5mm x 32mm Hilti DBZ Fastenings. Once fixed, place another bead of fire rated sealant along the KOROK C- track floor junction and one to the inside KOROK C-track (frame side). Inside track sealant Floor junction sealant STEP 3 Install first KOROK panel Fix the KOROK C-track to the first panel with 10g x 16mm Wafer Tek screws at 500mm centres and place in position and temporarily brace. 500mm.20

TERRACED HOUSING INTERTENANCY SYSTEMS INSTALLATION STEP 4 1000mm max. Install panels vertically Continue placing KOROK panels into position, ensuring they clip together neatly. Screw the KOROK panels together at 1000mm centres ensuring panel fixings are into the panel joints with 10g x 16mm Wafer Tek screws. Note: The height of the unrestrained KOROK above the KOROK aluminium KOROK bracket attached to the sub loor must not exceed 600mm. 250mm 500mm STEP 5 Fix KOROK aluminium brackets Fix the first row of KOROK aluminium brackets at no more than 3m above the floor to the timber framing and the KOROK panels at 500mm centres with 14g x 35mm Timber Tite screws and 14g x 30mm steel screws. Ensure wall is straight and true. STEP 6 Install and cut the inal KOROK panel Continue placing KOROK panels into position, ensuring they clip together neatly. Cut the last KOROK panel to fit the wall length and place KOROK C-track on the cut KOROK panel and fix off with 10g x16mm Wafer Tek screws at 250mm centres. Fix the KOROK C-track to the timber frame with the KOROK aluminium brackets. Fire Rated Sealant STEP 7 Add top KOROK C-track and fire rated sealant Fit the KOROK C-track to the top of the KOROK panels and fix to the KOROK panels with 10g x 16mm Wafer Tek screws at 250mm centres. Ensure the fire rated sealant is placed to both of the inside corners of the KOROK C-track before placing on top of the KOROK panels. Once the KOROK C-track is in place, add a bead of fire rated sealant to the outside edge of the KOROK C-track as shown..21

TERRACED HOUSING INTERTENANCY SYSTEMS INSTALLATION STEP 8 Beginning second level: apply fire rated sealant Place a 6mm bead of fire rated sealant on top of the KOROK C-track. Fire Rated Sealant STEP 9 Place and fix the KOROK C-track Place the second KOROK C-track directly on top and fix down with 14g x 30mm Steel Tites at 250mm staggered centres. Fire Rated Sealant Place a 6mm bead of fire rated sealant to both inside corners of the top KOROK C-track. Staggered fixings STEP 10 Install first KOROK panel on second level Fix the KOROK C-track to the first panel with 10g x 16mm Wafer Tek screws at 500mm centres and place in position. Fix the KOROK panels with a KOROK aluminium bracket and temporarily brace (as in step 3). STEP 11 Fix remaining KOROK panels Continue placing the KOROK panels, cutting to the required wall height, and fix to timber framing with KOROK aluminium brackets. Cut the last KOROK panel and KOROK C-track to fit wall width and height..22

TERRACED HOUSING INTERTENANCY SYSTEMS INSTALLATION Fire Rated Sealant STEP 12 Fix side KOROK C-track Place KOROK C-track vertically to the edge of the KOROK panels, fix off with 10g x16mm Wafer Tek screws at 250mm centres, connecting to the timber framing (repeating as shown in step 4 and step 5) 10g x 16mm Wafer Tek screws KOROK metal SIT flashing STEP 13 Fix horizontal KOROK SIT fire lashing* Check the fire rated sealant has been applied. Place the KOROK metal SIT flashing over the horizontal joint. Screw at 250mm centres with 10g x 16mm Wafer Tek screws on both edges of the KOROK SIT flashing. *Step 13 is required for all KOROK SIT systems using KOROK 51mm panel, and for all 2-hour SIT systems using KOROK 78mm panel. STEP 14 Trim KOROK panels at roof level Ensure the wall is screwed off at 1m centres vertically and 250mm centres horizontally with 10g x 16mm Wafer Tek screws. Ensure all KOROK C-track / KOROK panel junctions have been sealed with fire rated sealant and screwed off correctly. The last row of KOROK aluminum brackets must be fixed to the underside of the top truss cord (see page 24 for roof-intersection detail). Once the framing on the second side is completed, fix KOROK aluminium brackets at the correct centres..23

APARTMENT INTERTENANCY SYSTEMS INSTALLATION STEP 1 Measure surrounding structure KOROK systems are self supporting and non-load bearing. Each wall must span between a supporting structure of the same, or greater fire rating, than the KOROK Intertenancy System you choose. Once accurate dimensions of your surrounding structure to your wall have been obtained, use the KOROK span tables to determine if vertical or horizontal installation is the most suitable orientation for your application. All walls require a perimeter of KOROK C-track or angle. KOROK C-tracks are cut onsite to match either the wall height or width dimensions. STEP 2 Apply fire rated sealant between structure and KOROK C-track Before KOROK C-track/angles are fixed to structure, place a continuous bead of fire rated sealant between KOROK C- track/angles and structure for the entire perimeter top, bottom and both sides. 400mm max. STEP 3 Pre-drill KOROK C-track to structure Pre-drill through KOROK C-track/angle into structure at 400mm centres with a masonry drill bit. STEP 4 Install ixings Place fixings through the KOROK C-track or angles into structure at 400mm centres. 400mm max..36

APARTMENT INTERTENANCY SYSTEMS INSTALLATION STEP 5 Second bead of fire rated sealant The second bead of sealant between the KOROK C-track and structure may be applied where the bead of sealant shown in Step 2 might fail to seal the gap due to unevenness in the substrate. STEP 6 Check fixings and fire rated sealant Check that fixings into the structure are at 400mm centres around the perimeter. Fire rated sealant must form a continuous bead between the c track and structure Ensure a fire rated sealant forms a continuous bead between the KOROK C-track and the structure. STEP 7 Install KOROK vertically Slide each of your panels into the KOROK C-track, stopping at the cut KOROK C-track close-off mark (see step 8). To assist fitting panels, panels should be 20mm shorter than the tight dimension between structures, e.g. if slab to slab = 4000mm, length of panel will be 3980mm. Each KOROK panel must fully interlock before fixing to ensure your fire rated and acoustic properties are maintained..37

APARTMENT INTERTENANCY SYSTEMS INSTALLATION 50mm STEP 8 Last KOROK panel vertical Ease-and-squeeze Push your KOROK panels into place until the KOROK Intertenancy wall is almost completed. Stop short of the end vertical channel by approximately 1 metre and cut out a 600mm angle section from the top and bottom KOROK C- track channel. Plan ahead and make an allowance for a 50mm overlap onto the KOROK panels installed prior to the last remaining two KOROK panels. Make your end panel cut to ensure that a distance of 500mm remains for the last two KOROK panels to be eased and squeezed into position. Once in position, simply replace the angle and fix to the KOROK panels. Screw the track and angle to the panels. 50mm Fire Rated Sealant STEP 9 Ripping KOROK panels To complete the KOROK Intertenancy wall, a KOROK panel may need to be cut lengthways. This is known as ripping. The reason a KOROK panel may need to be ripped is due to the fact that most wall lengths will not be specific to 250mm incremental measurements (250mm is the coverage of an installed KOROK panel). The recommended tools to use when ripping a KOROK panel are: Sabre saw (also known as a reciprocating saw) Fire Rated Sealant Radial saw with dust extraction (recommended cutting disc: Hilti DC-D 305/22) STEP 10 KOROK panel sealant When using the 51mm KOROK panels, seal the 3 close-off panel joints with fire rated sealant to one side..38

APARTMENT INTERTENANCY SYSTEMS INSTALLATION Up to 6.0m height Up to 5.0m height Unlimited length 500mm 500mm Unlimited length 500mm 500mm 250mm 250mm 750mm 750mm 750mm 1000mm 1000mm 1000mm 1000mm 500mm STEP 11 Standard fixing pattern for vertical KOROK Intertenancy walls: walls up to 5.0m height All KOROK panels are screwed directly into the KOROK panel joints vertically at 1.0m centres and horizontally at 250mm centres. KOROK C-track/angle enclosing the KOROK panels are fixed at 500mm centres to the KOROK panels. At KOROK C-track/angle corner junctions there are additional fixings screwed at 45 degrees as shown below. Standard fixing pattern for vertical KOROK Intertenancy walls: walls up to 6.0m height and corner T- intersections Walls up to 6m high require additional fixings to withstand the extra load. Working your way toward the centre (from both sides) fix the first two panels at 500mm centres, the second two at 750mm centres and the rest at 1000mm centres vertically as shown below. Note that only 78mm KOROK panels can be used for walls up to 6.0m height..39

APARTMENT INTERTENANCY SYSTEMS INSTALLATION STEP 12 Place fire rated sealant to the perimeter KOROK C-track Each side, place a continuous bead of the fire rated sealant between the KOROK C-track and the KOROK panel. STEP 13 Final check At the completion of the job and at the finish of each day s work, it is essential that the completed area be thoroughly cleaned of all swarf, rivet stems, nails, drillings and screws etc. normally associated with the installation of metal KOROK panels. Remove any remaining strippable film, check all fixings are correctly installed, all fire and acoustic sealant is applied correctly..40
