The pebbles and stones are a natural product, meaning that not two pieces are exactly alike. It is not unusual to find veins and lines of separation in the pebbles. This is generally a desired feature of the product. BEFORE YOU BEGIN Before installing the tiles, inspect your tiles for algae or yellow discoloration. This is the result of climate change and can easily be remedied by wetting the tiles and placing them outdoors in direct sunlight for eight hours. SUBSTRATES All substrates should be flat, clean, dry, free of any contamination, and firmly fixed in place. Deflections should be a maximum of 1/360 of the span for walls and floors. Use in wet areas requires special attention involving appropriate substrates e.g.- concrete, cement boards (compressed sheet) and treated plywood. Always use reinforced waterproof membranes. When used for flooring make sure the fall to drainage point is not less than 2 inches. WATERPROOF MEMBRANES Waterproof membranes prevent the leakage of water through subflooring. Attention must be paid to carrying the membrane up the wall, outside of shower boxes, installation of bond breakers, and sealing around penetrations. Membrane systems should be used in all wet areas including exterior suspended decking. Some systems involve the use of a primer. ADHESIVE Use a product that is suitable for your project. The manufacturers literature will explain if the adhesive is to be used for interior or exterior use, or for walls or floors. Generally, a cement-based adhesive is suitable on masonry substrates where no movement is anticipated. If slight movement could occur because of pedestrian or thermal loads, a modified cement adhesive should be used as a minimum (probably 2-part.) It is important that each pebble be firmly imbedded in the adhesive. Use a product suitable for application with a 1 /4" notched trowel, and apply no more than three square feet of adhesive at a time. LAYING AND JOINT HIDING Interlocking pebble tiles are designed to create a seamless look. It is a good idea to lay the tiles on the ground first to arrange desired alignment and layout before using adhesive. IT IS CRUCIAL TO ALTERNATE AND STAGGER the pieces in each row so the seams do not line up from one row to the next. This will ensure that the seams do not show. The best way to do this is to start with the tile edge against the wall. In the next row above it, cut a piece in half to begin and then continue with full pieces. Natural Stone Field Tile Guidelines For Installation For the next row begin with a full piece etc.. Butt tiles together and do not leave the traditional 1 /4" to 3 /8" grout gap that is left for laying traditional ceramic tiles. If you are working with corners (such as in a shower), always start with the corner first and work your way out from there. You will need to order extra pieces from which you can pull pebbles to fill in gaps. For example, when a piece is flush against a wall, there will be a staggered or ragged piece. Simply pull pebbles off an extra piece, dab thinset onto the back of the loose pebble and press it into place in the needed areas between the tile and wall. GROUTING The grout should be suitable for joints up to 1 /2"wide whether it is for internal or external use. Generally, grouts are mixed with water, but an acrylic or latex grout is recommended to prevent cracking in case of slight movement in the tiled area. Wait no longer than the period recommended by the manufacturer before grouting to minimize dirt ingress between the pebbles, and the possible dislodgment of the pebbles. It is recommended that the grout level not be higher than the maximum girth of the pebble to ensure that as much of the pebble is seen as possible. CURVED SURFACES The pebble tiles can be easily fitted around a gently curved surface such as a column. If the sheet is curved around a right angle, some pebbles will need to be plucked off the mat where they are distorted and replaced with smaller pebbles to maintain uniformity of the pebble tile. For vertical and contoured surfaces it is recommended to use a smaller pebble size and a polymer based adhesive with a quick drying time SEALING To protect the application and bring out the true color of the stone, it is recommended that the pebble tiles be sealed with a quality professional grade sealant following installation. We recommend using Dry Treat sealant, which is a non-yellowing sealant that will not deteriorate or break down over time. The porosity or water absorption in the pebbles varies, therefore staining may occur in areas subjected to water if tiles are left unsealed. CLEANING YOUR PEBBLE TILE The pebbles may be cleaned with a neutral mild detergent, a vinegar solution, or a 10% hydrochloric acid solution mixed with water. Apply with a stiff bristled brush and then rinse with water. 01-2007 The pebbles and stones are a natural product, meaning that not two pieces are exactly alike. Some systems involve the use of a primer. ADHESIVE Use a product that is suitable for your project. We recommend using a latex-modified thin set to adhere the tiles. One product that is readily available is Vesabond by Custom Blend, an acrylic-based thinset that is a high-bond adhesive. Lay a 1 /4" layer of the adhesive and press the tile carefully into place. The adhesive should ooze through the mesh and contact the backside of the pebbles. It is important that each pebble be firmly imbedded in the adhesive. Use a product suitable for application with a 1 /4" notched trowel, and apply no more than three square feet of adhesive at a time. LAYING AND JOINT HIDING Before installation, inspect tiles to make sure all pebbles are properly in place on the tile. Remove and re-adhere any pebbles that may have been placed incorrectly. Interlocking pebble tiles are designed to create a seamless look. For maximum seamless effect, snip out any mesh sticking out between the interlocking joints or pebbles of the tiles where the interlock will be.
