PIPELINE INSPECTION TECHNOLOGY
Intelligent Pigging Systems MFL (Magnetic Flux Leakage) UT (Ultrasonic Testing) Measurement Accuracy Result Availability Size and Weight Launching Medium Pipe Material Speed Range Cost Uses magnetic flux leakage technique to magnetize line and measure flux leakage. Results quoted as +/- 10% which means 20% margin of error. Can take 2 to 3 months with data analysis performed by expert. Large tools sometimes weighing hundreds of kilograms needing cranes to launch. Lifting equipment required and due to large size needs significant clearing. Can be used in most mediums including gas, liquid and multiphase. Bare carbon steel only and to a maximum thickness of 25mm Can travel at speeds of 1 to 5 meters per second making them ideal for long lines. Can travel many hundreds or thousands of kilometers. Cheap in comparison to other techniques but expensive compared to Dacon UT. Uses ultrasonic testing technique to take measurements at 1,600 times per second. Highest available accuracy with defects measured to within 0.1 mm. Instantly available after inspection with simple and easy to understand analysis. Small lightweight tools weighing around 20% of MFL tools of the same diameter. No lifting equipment required for tools up to 36" and can launch in restricted space. Works only in liquid filled lines although batching can be used in gas lines. Works on any material and on any thickness of pipe wall. Needs travel speed of 1 to 5 meters per second to be effective. Up to 100 kilometers is possible however up to 50 kilometers is ideal. Cost is 50% lower than other techniques and mobilization and launch is cheaper.
Dacon Specialize in UT
How UT Pigging Works Horizontally placed ultrasonic transducer sends sound waves horizontally. 45 rotating mirror directs the sound waves perpendicular towards the pipe wall. Signal reflects back to the transducer the same way it came. Difference in time between sent and received signal measured and recorded. Measurements of up to 1,600 times per second depending on the pipe diameter.
Ultrasonic Principle Electrical > Mechanical Vibration > Very High Frequency Sound Reflected Wave Object Sender / Receiver Original Wave Velocity = Distance Divided by Time
Measuring Defects Signal Analysis
Why use UT Limited access work areas are fine Metallic and non-metallic pipeline Most accurate / detailed inspection method Simple data analysis No wall thickness limitation Immediate onsite results Final report within 2 weeks Saves time and money for all the above reasons

PIPELINE INSPECTION PROCRESS
Progressive Pigging Soft foam pig is launched to ensure there are no obstructions in the pipeline. Medium or hard density foam cleaning pigs are launched to clean the line and further detect for obstructions. Gauging pig is launched into the pipeline as a final check for obstructions, dents and ovalities that may cause problems. If gauging plate comes back in a satisfactory condition then the Intelligent Pig is launched and the pipeline data acquired. Data is downloaded directly from the pig to the Dacon data analysis system and an immediate initial assessment can be given.
