(Consolidated up to 10/2018) ALBERTA REGULATION 300/2000 Apprenticeship and Industry Training Act REFRIGERATION AND AIR CONDITIONING MECHANIC TRADE REGULATION Table of Contents 1 Definitions General Matters Respecting the Trade 2 Constitution of the trade 3 Tasks, activities and functions Apprenticeship 4 Term of the apprenticeship program 5 Employment of apprentices 6 Wages Transitional Provisions, Repeals and Coming into Force 7 Apprenticeship continues 8 Repeal 10 Coming into force Definitions 1 In this Regulation, (a) apprentice means a person who is an apprentice in the trade; (b) certified journeyperson means a certified journeyperson as defined in the Apprenticeship Program Regulation; (c) refrigeration and air conditioning system means any type of primary or secondary refrigeration and air conditioning system, other than the duct work and sheet metal items associated with the system, and without limiting the generality of the foregoing includes the following: (i) piping;

REFRIGERATION AND AIR CONDITIONING Section 2 MECHANIC TRADE REGULATION AR 300/2000 (ii) compressor assemblies; (iii) condenser and cooling tower assemblies; (iv) evaporator assemblies and defrost systems; (v) system controls and control valves; (vi) air handling, distribution equipment and make up air and exhaust systems; (vii) heat recovery and indoor air quality systems; (viii) circulating pump assemblies; (ix) geo-thermal and heat pump systems; (x) packaged and central air conditioning systems; (xi) pre-fabricated walk in coolers, freezers and environmental panels; (xii) system accessories and ancillary components; (xiii) monitoring and control and detection systems that are part of or used in respect of refrigeration and air conditioning systems; (xiv) commercial and industrial refrigeration process equipment and control systems; (xv) specialized food service equipment; (d) technical training means technical training as defined in the Apprenticeship Program Regulation; (e) trade means the occupation of refrigeration and air conditioning mechanic that is designated as a compulsory certification trade pursuant to the Apprenticeship and Industry Training Act. AR 300/2000 s1;270/2006;14/2014 General Matters Respecting the Trade Constitution of the trade 2 The undertakings that constitute the trade are the installation, maintenance, service, alteration, repair and decommission of refrigeration and air conditioning systems. REFRIGERATION AND AIR CONDITIONING Section 3 MECHANIC TRADE REGULATION AR 300/2000 Tasks, activities and functions 3 When practising or otherwise carrying out work in the trade, the following tasks, activities and functions come within the trade: (a) removing refrigerants from refrigeration and air conditioning systems; (b) installing, removing, recycling, storing and disposing of primary and secondary refrigerants; (c) transporting, handling and using refrigerants and other dangerous goods; (d) using, in relation to refrigeration and air conditioning systems, electrical and other measuring and testing devices; (e) carrying out soldering, brazing, welding and various other pipe joining techniques on or in relation to refrigeration and air conditioning systems; (f) maintaining and making electrical repairs to existing equipment from the breaker or disconnect switch as follows: (i) changing controls, contactors, motors and compressors; (ii) repairing burnt or broken wires; (iii) making minor upgrades of controls to existing refrigeration and air conditioning systems; (g) maintaining and repairing refrigeration and air conditioning units, appliances and accessories designed for the utilization of natural or propane gas as a fuel for heating or cooling that do not exceed 400 000 BTU (117 kw) input; (h) using hand tools, power tools and trade specific tools while working on refrigeration and air conditioning systems. AR 300/2000 s3;14/2014 Apprenticeship Term of the apprenticeship program 4(1) Subject to credit for previous training or experience being granted pursuant to an order of the Board, the term of an 3

REFRIGERATION AND AIR CONDITIONING Section 5 MECHANIC TRADE REGULATION AR 300/2000 apprenticeship program for the trade is 4 periods of not less than 12 months each. (2) In the first period of the apprenticeship program an apprentice must acquire not less than 1500 hours of on the job training and successfully complete the technical training that is required or approved by the Board. (3) In the 2nd period of the apprenticeship program an apprentice must acquire not less than 1500 hours of on the job training and successfully complete the technical training that is required or approved by the Board. (4) In the 3rd period of the apprenticeship program an apprentice must acquire not less than 1500 hours of on the job training and successfully complete the technical training that is required or approved by the Board. (5) In the 4th period of the apprenticeship program an apprentice must acquire not less than 1500 hours of on the job training and successfully complete the technical training that is required or approved by the Board. Employment of apprentices 5(1) Where a person employs an apprentice, that employment must be carried out in accordance with this section. (2) Subject to subsection (3), a person who is a certified journeyperson in the trade or employs a certified journeyperson in the trade may employ 2 apprentices and 2 additional apprentices for each additional certified journeyperson in the trade that is employed by that person. (3) Subsection (2) does not apply to an apprentice who is engaged in an apprenticeship program in the trade and has completed all the requirements required or approved by the Board for advancement into the 4th period of that apprenticeship program. AR 300/2000 s5;102/2006;270/2006;1/2011 Wages 6(1) Subject to the Apprenticeship Program Regulation, a person shall not pay wages to an apprentice that are less than those provided for under subsection (2). (2) Subject to the Employment Standards Code, a person employing an apprentice must pay wages to the apprentice that are at least equal to the following percentages of the wages paid to employees who are certified journeypersons in the trade: 4

REFRIGERATION AND AIR CONDITIONING Section 7 MECHANIC TRADE REGULATION AR 300/2000 (a) 50% in the first period of the apprenticeship program; (b) 60% in the 2nd period of the apprenticeship program; (c) 75% in the 3rd period of the apprenticeship program; (d) 85% in the 4th period of the apprenticeship program. AR 300/2000 s6;270/2006 Transitional Provisions, Repeals and Coming into Force Apprenticeship continues 7 A person who immediately prior to January 1, 2001 was an apprentice in an apprenticeship program under the Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic Trade Regulation (AR 198/95) continues as an apprentice in that apprenticeship program under this Regulation. Repeal 8 The Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic Trade Regulation (AR 198/95) is repealed. 9 Repealed AR 10/2018 s4. Coming into force 10 This Regulation comes into force on January 1, 2001. 5
