Every second the Earth is getting polluted and if we carry on polluting the environment, what will happen to our children s future and our natural legacy? How will they live? Just ask these questions yourself and think carefully The environment is the most important resource for life. We get our daily life essentials like water, power and oxygen from the environment. We get lots of other resources from our environment too but if we use too much of them - we may run out of resources all too soon. Every single thing we humans do leave carbon footprints. Even the food we eat also has a climate impact. Understanding the resources that go into producing our food can make us more aware of the link between food and climate change. Producing meat for human consumption is a large contributor to climate change. It is estimated that livestock and farming land uses and takes 30 per cent of the land surface of the planet. Because of their large numbers, livestock produce a large amount of greenhouse gases, such as methane and nitrous oxide. In addition, farming practices can also impact the climate. Pesticides and fertilizers are widely used in farming, and these can severely damage the environment. The use of nitrogen fertilizers in soils produces nitrous oxide, a greenhouse gas that is approximately 300 times more powerful than carbon dioxide at trapping heat in the atmosphere. Earth is our only home. We need to protect and preserve it All of us can do our part by adopting the 3Rs - Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and incorporate them into our daily good habits. We can help reduce waste by choosing reusable products instead of disposables. Buying products with minimal packaging will help to reduce waste. We can also recycle paper, plastic, newspaper, glass and aluminium cans. By recycling half of your household waste, you can save 2,400 pounds of carbon dioxide annually. Saving money, fuel, and releasing less carbon dioxide into the air by walking instead of driving a car is yet another green option! There are many other ways to protect and preserve the environment but for now a great way is to pass this newsletter around so others can read it. You re actually practising recycling now and sharing precious information! Why pursue an eco-friendly life? Being eco-friendly simply means being friendly to nature and the environment around us. Since Earth is the only planet we know that can sustain life for us and its inhabitants - we need to be eco-friendly to save our planet Earth, the environment and ensure it to be a better place to live in for all of us. But what does an ecofriendly life really means? Is it only confined to going green, support only eco-friendly products; save the environment and recycle? Million tonnes of waste is produced in the world every day. Just think about the millions of tonnes of plastic bottles that are thrown away every year which cannot disintegrate. Or the land, water and air pollution that are driving animals, previously in abundance, into extinction because of our habits.toxins leaching out of factories into streams, rivers and world's oceans do not only destroy marine and aquatic life, but its poisonous chemicals also contaminate our food source with mercury and other harmful and deadly chemicals. Therefore, pursuing an eco-friendly life is not just about addressing the crisis that the current generation faces. It will instead, be a challenge for our children and their future generations. Thus, pursuing an eco-friendly life means taking corrective action now and we can do this by adopting new habits that respect and care for the environment.

What do we have to do to pursue an eco-friendly life? The first step is to understand the underlying issues that contribute to environmental crisis. Briefly, these are: Environmental Issues such as air, land and water pollution. If left unchecked, these contaminants and pollutants will ultimately affect us in the air we breathe, the climatic changes and in the food we eat and drink. Erosion this occur for many reasons such as over-development of land, whether for new housing developments, industry growth or agriculture. Extreme weather conditions can exacerbate erosion in regions where it is a problem. Pesticides which contaminate the food chain and our food sources such as pesticides in fruits and vegetables. Going eco-friendlythe next step Embracing the eco-friendly concept is a complex process and we need to take one step at time by replacing current methods and products with eco-friendly ones. Some of these include: Use alternative fuel vehicles like LPG that reduce exhaust emissions Apply green building principles for new property construction and development Avoid household carpets, rugs, furniture and other products that contain formaldehyde and chemicals, opting instead for green substitutes Buy and grow organic vegetables, fruits, meats and poultry Change harsh dish detergents and laundry detergents for green products Go paperless Install low-volume flush toilets or compost toilets Opt for non-chemical personal hygiene products Practice waste management by composting when possible and replacing plastic bags, plates, cups and utensils with biodegradable plant-based products Reduce, reuse and recycle when possible Replace household chemicals with green cleaning products Replace light bulbs with more energy efficient and non-heat producing LED bulbs Use rechargeable batteries and many more To sum it up, being eco-friendly is adopting measures to create a greener world and leave a smaller footprint. The impact we make today on the environment makes a big difference for our future generations. Nobody wants to live in a world filled with smog and pollution. It s hard to breathe, it smells bad, and it causes untold numbers of health problems. The same goes for trash which ends up directly to a landfill. Given the amount of trash that most people generate, it s a miracle that we aren t swimming in it already. If you don t like this landfill-everywhere vision of the future, being environmentally conscious is the only way to go. Additives such as antibiotics which are fed to livestock to fatten them faster so as to meet our food demands. These chemicals too, will ultimately end up inside our bodies. But the most important reason for going ecofriendly is that we are using up our resources faster than we can replenish them, and that s bad. If we continue at the same pace we re going at now, we ll eventually run out of fossil fuels, then trees, then clean water, then just about everything else that isn t sustainable. In order to keep up our current way of living, we re all going to have to start caring more about the environment.

1 THE LINK BETWEEN ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS AND HEALTH ISSUES You may have heard about the environmental issues and their consequences on human health lately. Issues such as global warming, indoor and outdoor pollution, chemical and toxic abuse, radiation and other equally destructive activities may have wreaked on the environment not only affect us economically - but pose a real danger on our health too. The environment affects our health in many ways. The interaction between human health and the environment has been extensively studied and environmental risks have been proven to significantly impact human health, either directly by exposing people to harmful agents, or indirectly, by disrupting life-sustaining ecosystems. Environmental hazards to health are associated with widespread poverty and severe lack of public infrastructure, such as access to drinking water, sanitation, lack of health care and emerging problems of industrial pollution. Environmental risks are also primarily attributed to urban air and water pollution. Experts have warned that the erosion of ecosystems could lead to an increase in existing diseases such as malaria and cholera, as well as a rising risk of new diseases emerging. 2 Let s take a look at some general views of the environmental impact on human health: Indoor air pollution Exposure to indoor air pollution has been linked to many diseases, in particular pneumonia among children and chronic respiratory diseases among adults. Typical indoor pollutants include paint, cleaning chemicals, cosmetics, fragrances and of course, tobacco smoke. Outdoor air pollution Air pollution like industrial and automobile discharges, open burning, and so forth continues to pose a significant threat to health worldwide. Many countries around the world do not have regulations on air pollution. Air pollution is a major environmental risk to health and is estimated to cause approximately two million premature deaths worldwide per year. 3 7 Sound pollution Climate change and Noise may present a nuisance to many 4 5 inhabitants, and impair general well-being. Environmental noise does not usually contribute to deafness but notable exceptions may include noisy discotheques and "personal stereos". Chemical safety The harmful effects of chemicals to humans are being increasingly exposed for their potential risks to human health. These include the use of pesticides, optical brighteners in detergents, household cleaning agents and many more. Electromagnetic fields Although invisible to the human eye, electric and magnetic discharge electromagnetic radiation which may be harmful to health. Examples include radiofrequency and infrared radiation, Wi-Fi, overexposure to computer radiation to X-rays and more. 6 Landfill and toxins Many materials that end up as waste contain toxic substances which can become environmental hazards for years. Electronic wastes contain a long list of hazardous substances, including mercury, arsenic, cadmium, PVC, solvents, acids and lead. Leachate, the liquid formed when waste breaks down in the landfill can pollute the land, ground water and water ways. Organic wastes produce greenhouse gas that is 21 times more potent than carbon dioxide and the implications for global warming and climate change are enormous. 8 9 human health Large-scale and global environmental hazards to human health include climate change, ozone depletion, loss of biodiversity and much more. Occupational health Workplace fatalities, injuries and illnesses remain at unacceptably high levels and involve an enormous and unnecessary health burden, suffering, and economic loss. Water, sanitation and health Access to clean water, proper sanitation and good health care are of paramount importance. Contact with unsafe drinking or bathing water can impose serious risks (both acute and delayed) to human health. There is also the risk of microbe contamination of most diarrhoeal deaths in the world (88%) are caused by unsafe water, sanitation or hygiene. The above account demonstrates the wide range of effects that the environment may have on human health. Environmental degradation poses a significant threat to human health worldwide. Harmful consequences of this degradation to human health are already being felt and could grow significantly worse over the next 50 years. To conclude it is everybody s responsibility to play a proactive role in preserving the environment in order to preserve our health and for our future generation. Every minute, five children in developing countries die from malaria or diarrhoea. Every hour, 100 children die as a result of exposure to indoor smoke from solid fuels. Every day, nearly 1,800 people in developing cities die as a result of exposure to urban air pollution. Every month, nearly 19,000 people in developing countries die from unintentional poisonings. GMO AND ITS ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT The debate around genetically modified organisms (GMO) is huge and heated on either side. One of the major considerations when arguing against the use of GMO products is the potential for environmental harm. What exactly are the environmental risks to consider in regards to GMOs? We ve heard of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO). Vaguely, our understanding of GMO probably revolves around that of food. Before we articulate on the environmental risks of using GMO, let us first understand what GMO really is. GMO defined In simple terms, a Genetically Modified Organism (GMO) is a plant, animal, or microorganism which has its genetic material transformed through genetic engineering methods. The food industry have genetically modified plants for insect protection, herbicide and virus resistance, enhanced nutrition, tolerance to environmental pressures, production of edible vaccines and many more other uses. GMOs have also been used to genetically modify animals for research, and in the production of agricultural and pharmaceutical products. Naturally unnatural As GMO is essentially altering DNA in artificial ways, these changes could result in some potentially problematic environmental challenges

Toxicity Toxicity is a huge issue surrounding chemical pesticides and herbicides. Majority of GMOs have been engineered to be herbicide or pesticide resistant - so farmers using GMO plants need not worry that their plants will die when herbicides or pesticides are used to get rid of pests and weeds. These chemicals used might not pose a problem on GMO plants, however its toxic effects are certainly still harmful to other non - GMO plants, insects which feed on the plants, and also humans. Long-term effects The long-term effects of GMOs are uncertain. Pests that are targeted by these agricultural methods can adapt to pesticides and herbicides, but their long-term toxic effects on the environment will remain. Cumulative effects Studies have shown that small genetic changes in plants may produce even larger ecological shifts, meaning that there is potential for GMO s to become persistent and weedy in agricultural conditions, since they are modified to be resistant to some modern agricultural techniques. This can pose a threat in our delicate, natural ecosystems. Threat to biodiversity When GM crops are planted, generally in a monocrop fashion, many heritage seeds are no longer used, resulting in a loss of crop biodiversity. As more and more crops of the same cultivar with the same susceptibility to pests and plant diseases are used, a serious loss of crops could result when widespread pest attacks or plant diseases occur. Animal biodiversity loss can also occur as a result of planting GM plants. For example, some GM plants are engineered to produce a certain protein in their pollens which could cause death when consumed by insects. As a result, Monarch butterfly populations, which normally feed on pollens, have been found to have a 50% reduction in population. Nutrient loss GM plants can be engineered to tolerate environmental situations which are bad for growth, such as releasing organic acids in the roots to the soil to counteract nutrient deficiency. However, as a consequence of these traits, some delicate processes that occur in the soil to produce nutrients essential for plant growth may be disturbed. A cycle of dependence on GMO seeds and chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides are then created, and this can all eventually result in soil that is even lower in nutrients for plant growth. Emergence of new bacteria and threats In addition to soil issues, the irrigation used to grow GM foods can carry GM -related DNA problems into water sources and into the air. This process poses a huge threat to insects, animals, and humans. Also, the emergence of different bacteria and viruses which has absorbed genes from GM plants can pose an even bigger threat to humans and animals. All of these impacts must be taken into consideration in the larger picture - GMO s DNA may end up in soil, compost, animal feed and by-products, and other living organisms from insects to larger pests. Bees can transport pesticides, herbicides, and DNA through the air into the environment. Once a plant is introduced in an agricultural environment, it is reasonable to assume it will become part of a larger ecosystem, meaning the problem of environmental damage done by GMOs can be much larger than simply potentially harming our health. Well3 ISP-10: the healthy, highly nutritious alternative to GMO foods Proteins are the building blocks of life. We need protein in order to survive. There is a prevalent perception that protein equates meats. People in high income countries typically have diets that are high in meat and saturated fat and low in fruits and vegetables and whole grains, with the overwhelming evidence to show that this dietary pattern increases the risk of heart disease, certain types of cancer, stroke and diabetes. Replacing meats with more plant-based foods can help prevent diet-related diseases such as cancer, obesity and heart disease. Also, well-planned plantbased diets are healthy at all stages of the lifecycle. ISP-10 is a GMO-free product which can help provide a part of a well-planned, plant-based diet. The ingredients included are as natural as the fruit, vegetables and seeds that you eat except that it is hygienically processed into powder form for better bioavailability and digestibility. FREE RADICALS ENVIRONMENT ANDYOU Free radicals are derived either from normal essential metabolic processes in the human body or from external sources. In the body, free radicals can destroy cell membranes and make cells vulnerable to decay and pathogens. These free radicals can damage DNA and mitochondria, the basic 1 What are free radicals? Everything in the universe is made up of atoms. They are the building blocks of everything in our body. An atom is made up of electrons, protons and neutrons. Positioned at the centre of the atom are the protons and neutrons which make up the nucleus of the atom. We need oxygen to survive. Inside our body, the interaction between oxygen molecules and body cells creates a process called oxidation. Because of this reactive process, the loss of at least one electron will occur in the atom of body cells resulting in an atom with a missing electron now called a free radical. Because of the missing electron, the atom will need to steal another electron in order to become whole again. For example they might take electrons from the lipids (fats) in a cell membrane to supplement for the lost electron. An accumulation of free radicals set off a chain reaction and wreaks havoc in our body s cells. Excessive oxidative damage - the damage to cells, tissues and DNA - happens, accelerating ageing, and can give rise to health problems. Bruce Ames, a well-known scientist in the field of antioxidants, estimates that just one cell in the human body is hit about 10,000 times a day by free radicals. If that is multiplied by the trillions of cells in the body, the magnitude of this activity is tremendous. How are free radicals formed? Internally - oxygen is the basis for the formation of free radicals. We require large amounts of it for metabolism to break down nutrients for growth and energy. This energy is required for processes such as breathing, thinking, digesting your food and having a beating heart. Externally - free radicals can be caused by environmental sources such as tobacco smoke, oil fumes, chemicals, pollutants, radiation, or the sun. The environment around us and the commercial products we use daily like body and hair shampoos can also be contributing factors to free radical damage. Free radical proliferation can also be caused by a lack of antioxidants in the diet, or the inability of the body to produce enough of them. Take antioxidants to protect yourself from free radical damage Antioxidants help keep us healthy by reducing or stopping the damage that free radicals cause. They work in several ways: Removing or neutralising free radicals by donating an electron. By doing so the antioxidant becomes oxidised itself. In the process it becomes a free radical, but only a relatively weak one which is unlikely to do any harm. Reducing the formation of free radicals by minimizing the availability of pro-oxidants, therefore preventing the formation of more free radicals. 2 3

There are many different kinds of antioxidants, from ones produced by our body, to those that we get through our diet. Different antioxidants have different roles something may be an antioxidant in one situation but not another.
