Mooney s Bay Section 00 40 00 General Scope of Work Page 1 of 3 1.0 General 1.1 The following is a general scope of work intended to assist the Contractor in assessing the work involved for the Mooney s Bay 2.0 Mobilization 2.1 Provide 8-foot modular construction fencing and signage as necessary to separate the Work area from the remainder of the surrounding public area. Lay-down area for materials storage to be approved by the City of Ottawa. 2.2 Provide environmental protections and abatement during the work as specified in Sections: - Section 028311: Lead-Based Paint Test Area Precautions; - Section 028312: Lead-Based Paint Abatement Intermediate Precautions - Section 028313: Lead-Based Paint Abatement Maximum Precautions 3.0 Demolition 3.1 Notify the Consultant for review of the existing structure in conjunction with the Contractor prior to commencing Work. 3.2 Remove and dispose of the existing plank decking, guard rails, and any other deleterious materials to expose existing glulam beam structure and cross bracing. 4.0 Glulam Beam Coating Removal 4.1 Sample Removal Area: Clean all loose, deleterious materials including creosote and paint residue from a minimum of three 500x500mm sample areas at the inside vertical surface of the existing glulam beams. Do not remove more than 5mm thickness of the wood substrate during cleaning. Provide 72 hours notice to Consultant for review of sample cleaned area. Cleaning methods may include: - Provide One Area: Preparation using hand tools and solvent based paint removers (In conjunction with Section 028312 Intermediate Precautions); - Provide Two Areas: Preparation using sandblasting with soda, crushed glass, or crushed walnut shell (In conjunction with Section 028313 Maximum Precautions) 4.2 Upon approval of the Sample Removal Area by the City and Consultant, proceed to clean all deleterious materials using the chosen cleaning method from the exterior surfaces of the entire glulam bridge structure. Do not remove more than 5mm thickness of the wood substrate during cleaning.

Mooney s Bay Section 00 40 00 General Scope of Work Page 2 of 3 5.0 Cross Bracing Replacement 5.1 Remove and replace existing cross bracing between glulam beam members. Remove only one set of braces at a time and install new set of braces prior to removing and replacing subsequent sets. Using new pressure-treated members as per the project specifications and drawings, match the existing size, layout and fastening profile of the existing cross bracing. 6.0 New Decking and Guards 6.1 Upon completion of the glulam beam coating removal, install new dampproofing membrane to the top surface of the glulam beams. Ensure membrane terminates on the horizontal cross section of the beam and is not visible from grade after the new bridge deck is installed. 6.2 Install new pressure treated wood decking and guardrails using galvanized steel fasteners as per the project specifications and drawings. 1. Note: Build-out new stairs at the ends of the bridge generally as per the project drawings and specifications. New stairs are to be constructed of the same cross section of wood as the bridge deck. Risers and horizontal supports shall also be constructed of the same cross section of wood as the bridge deck, double-ply, set on the short edge and trimmed to match the curve of the bridge. Ensure all stair risers are the same height plus/minus 6mm. 2. Note: Provide a base price for straight sections of top and bottom rail, with joints at each post in order to match the mid-point tangent slope of the existing bridge between each post. Provide an optional price to install a curved top and bottom rail to match the curve radius of the existing bridge. 7.0 Coatings and Finishes 7.1 Optional Glulam Waterproofing Sealer: At the glulam beams, apply a 500x500mm sample area of environmentally safe, water based, breathable, high binding, colour tint-able, clear acrylic, penetrating waterproofing sealer at an interior surface of the beam for review and testing by the Consultant and the City. Provide optional colourant to be selected by the City from standard colour options. Upon approval of the test area, apply the waterproofing sealer to the entire exposed exterior surfaces of the glulam beams as per the project specifications and manufacturer s instructions. 7.2 Pressure Treated Lumber Waterproofing Sealer: After installation of new wood components, allow minimum 8 months time to pass (3 seasons) prior to installing any coatings or finishes to the pressure treated lumber. Apply a new environmentally safe, water based, breathable, high binding, colour tint-able, clear

Mooney s Bay Section 00 40 00 General Scope of Work Page 3 of 3 acrylic, penetrating waterproofing sealer to all pressure-treated wood components of the South Bridge as per the project specifications, drawings, and manufacturer s instructions. This includes all posts, pickets, rails, and decking. Provide optional colourant to be selected by the City from standard colour options. 7.3 Bridge Deck Anti-Slip Coating: After installation of waterproofing sealer at the bridge deck, apply a new environmentally safe, non-flammable, non-hazardous, waterborne, acrylic based, quartz, non-cementitious, anti-slip coating that is compatible with the waterproofing sealer. Provide optional colourant to be selected by the City from standard colour options. Apply the anti-slip coating across all pedestrian surfaces as per the project specifications, drawings and manufacturer s instructions. END OF SECTION

Approved Products:.1 #5551 Excel Anti-Slip Coating by GH International;.2 Or approved equivalent. 3.1 ACCEPTABLE INSTALLERS.1 Work to be executed by skilled craftsmen trained in this field, according to best practice. 3.2 EXAMINATION.1 Stop work and report immediately to Departmental Representative evidence of structural deficiencies, unacceptable conditions, fungal activity or insect infestation not described on drawings which may affect the scope of the work and durability of the finished product. 3.3 PREPARATION.1 Remove all existing wood decking, wood guards, and other deleterious materials to fully expose glulam beams and cross bracing..2 Sample Glulam Beam Coating Removal: Clean all loose, deleterious materials including creosote and paint residue from a minimum of three 500x500mm sample areas at the inside vertical surface of the existing glulam beams. Employ different cleaning methods at each sample area. Cleaning methods may include: Provide One Sample Area: Use hand tools to scrape away all deleterious materials; Provide Two Sample Areas: Sandblasting using either soda, crushed glass, or crushed walnut shell; Or approved equivalent. Provide 72 hours notice to Consultant for review of sample cleaned area. Upon approval by the City and Consultant, proceed to clean all deleterious materials using the chosen cleaning method from the exterior surfaces of the entire glulam bridge structure. Do not remove more than 5mm thickness of the wood substrate during cleaning.

Remove only one set of braces at a time and install new set of braces prior to removing and replacing subsequent sets. Match the existing size, layout and fastening profile of the existing cross bracing. Using new pressure-treated members as per the project specifications and drawings.2 Install new self-adhering, damp-proofing membrane on the top surface of the glulam beams as per the Drawings. Submit material specifications for damp-proofing to Consultant for review and approval prior to installation..3 Install the new wood bridge deck, vertical posts, rails and pickets as per the project drawings. All wood products to be micronized pressure treated (pressure treatment finish colour natural brown) as specified..4 Note: Build-out new stairs at the ends of the bridge generally as per the project drawings and as follows: New stairs are to be constructed of the same cross section of wood as the bridge deck. Risers and horizontal supports shall also be constructed of the same cross section of wood as the bridge deck, double-ply, set on small edge and trimmed to match the curve of the existing glulam beams. Ensure all stair risers are the same height plus/minus 6mm. Ensure the run of the stairs remains within plus/minus 50mm between the bottom step and the top step..4 General:.1 Fit corner joints and intersecting members accurately..2 Contractor to confirm all dimensions on site. Job dimensions, where applicable are to govern size of fabricated units.

Upon approval of the test area, apply the waterproofing sealer the entire exposed exterior surfaces of the glulam beams..2 Schedule: All additional wood treatments specified below shall be carried out after a specified seasoning time period: - Minimum: 8 months - Maximum: 12 months -.3 Waterproofing Sealer: Apply a waterproofing sealer to all pressure treated wood members as per the manufacturer s instructions..4 Bridge Deck Anti-Slip Coating: Apply a non-slip coating across all pedestrian surfaces, as per the manufacturer s instructions. Must be appropriate capacity for scope of work..5 Airlock: ingress or egress system, without permitting air movement between contaminated area and uncontaminated area. Consisting of two curtained doorways at least 2 m apart..6 Curtained doorway: arrangement of closures to allow ingress and egress from one room to another. Typically constructed as follows:.1 Place two overlapping polyethylene sheets over existing or temporarily framed doorway, securing each along top of doorway, securing vertical edge of one sheet along one vertical side of doorway, and secure other sheet along opposite vertical side of doorway..2 Reinforce free edges of polyethylene with duct tape and add weight to bottom edge to ensure proper closing..3 Overlap each polyethylene sheet at openings 1.5 m on each side..7 Action level: employee exposure, without regard to usage of respirators, to an airborne concentration of lead of 50 micrograms per cubic meter of air calculated as 8 hour timeweighted average (TWA). Intermediate precautions for lead abatement are based on airborne lead concentrations greater than 0.05 milligrams per cubic meter of air within Work Area..8 Competent person: individuals capable of identifying existing lead hazards in workplace and taking corrective measures to eliminate them..9 Lead in Dust: wipe sampling on vertical and/or horizontal surfaces, dust and debris is considered to be lead contaminated if it contains more than 40 micrograms of lead in dust per square foot. 1.7 SUBMITTALS.1 Provide proof satisfactory to Consultant that suitable arrangements have been made to dispose of lead based paint waste in accordance with requirements of authority having jurisdiction..2 Quality Control:.1 Provide proof satisfactory to Consultant that employees have had instruction on hazards of lead exposure, respirator use, dress, entry and exit from Work Area, and aspects of work procedures and protective measures..2 Provide proof that supervisory personnel have attended lead abatement course, of not less than two days duration, approved by Consultant. Minimum of one supervisor for every ten workers. 1.8 QUALITY ASSURANCE.1 Regulatory Requirements: comply with Provincial and local requirements pertaining to lead paint, in case of conflict among those requirements or with these specifications more stringent requirement applies. Comply with regulations in effect at time work is performed..2 Health and Safety:

Provide sufficient filters so workers can install new filters following disposal of used filters and before re-entering contaminated areas..2 Disposable type protective clothing that does not readily retain or permit skin contamination, consisting of full body covering including head covering with snug fitting cuffs at wrists, ankles, and neck..2 Requirements for workers:.1 Remove street clothes outside Work Area and put on respirator with new filters or reusable filters, clean coveralls and head covers before entering Work Area. Store street clothes, uncontaminated footwear, towels, and similar uncontaminated articles outside Work Area..2 Remove gross contamination from clothing before leaving Work Area. Place contaminated work suits in receptacles for disposal with other lead - contaminated materials. Repair damaged barriers and remedy defects immediately..3 Visually inspect enclosures at beginning of each working day. 3.3 LEAD - BASED PAINT ABATEMENT.1 Removal of lead based paint to be performed using abrasive blasting techniques..2 Remove lead based paint in small sections and pack as it is being removed in sealable 0.15 mm plastic bags and place in labelled containers for transport..3 Wet method to be used to reduce dust generation. Examples of wet methods include wetting surfaces, wet scraping, and wet shovelling. Wet method not be used if it creates a hazard or cause damage to equipment or to project..4 Seal filled containers. Clean external surfaces thoroughly by wet sponging. Remove immediate from working area to staging area. Clean external surfaces thoroughly again by wet sponging before moving containers to decontamination Washroom. Wash containers thoroughly in decontamination Washroom, and store in Holding Room pending removal to Unloading Room and outside. Ensure containers are removed from Holding Room by workers who have entered from uncontaminated areas dressed in clean coveralls..5 After completion of stripping work, wire brush and wet sponge surface to remove visible material. During this work keep surfaces wet. After wire brushing and wet sponging, wet clean and HEPA vacuum entire work area including Equipment and Access Room. Compressed air or dry sweeping not be used to clean up lead-containing dust or waste..6 Wet clean work area and equipment and access room. 3.4 INSPECTION.1 Perform inspection to confirm compliance with specification and governing authority requirements. Deviations from requirements not been approved in writing by Consultant will result in Work shutdown, at no cost to Owner..2 Consultant will inspect work for:.1 Adherence to specific procedures and materials..2 Final cleanliness and completion..3 No additional costs will be allowed for additional labour or materials required to provide specified performance level..3 When lead dust leakage from Work Area occurs Consultant will order Work shutdown..1 No additional costs will be allowed by Contractor for additional labour or materials required to provide specified performance level.

Vacuum visible lead containing particles observed during cleanup, immediately, using HEPA vacuum..3 Place polyethylene sheets, tape, cleaning material, clothing, and contaminated waste in plastic bags and sealed labelled waste containers for transport..4 Clean up Work areas, Equipment and Access Room, and other contaminated enclosures..5 Remove sealed waste containers and equipment used in Work and remove from work areas at appropriate time in cleaning sequence..6 Conduct final check to ensure no dust or debris remain on surfaces as result of dismantling operations. 3.6 RE-ESTABLISHMENT OF OBJECTS AND SYSTEMS.1 Repair or replace objects damaged in course of work to their original state or better, as directed by Consultant.
