Assist with preparing and maintaining livestock accommodation Overview This unit sets the standard for assisting with the preparation and maintenance of accommodation for livestock. You will be working under close supervision, and will follow the instructions of a supervisor at all times. The first element covers the preparation of livestock accommodation. Preparation may involve cleaning, sweeping and securing doors or gates, for example. It will also include the disposal of waste such as dung, urine, unused feed and packaging, for example. Accommodation may include barns, sheds or indoor waiting areas. During preparation you will be responsible for recognising any hazards that exist and reporting them to the appropriate person. The second element covers the maintenance of accommodation so that it is safe, healthy and clean for livestock. This will include replenishing any materials, such as bedding for example, that are required by the livestock. During such work you will be in position to keep an eye on the condition and behaviour of the livestock. You must be able to recognise any signs of poor health or abnormal behaviour, and refer these to the supervisor. Throughout this unit, you are expected to observe appropriate health and safety requirements relating to yourself, other people, and to the livestock themselves. 1. 2. LANAGNLP1 1
