2-Butoxyethanol had both positive and negative results in in vitro mutagenicity studies. Reports have associated repeated and prolonged occupational exposure to solvents with permanent brain and nervous system damage. Intentional misuse by deliberately concentrating and inhaling vapors may be harmful or fatal. The NTP has determined 2-Butoxyethanol is potentially carcinogenic to mice. The relevance to humans is unknown.
