TRAVERSE CITY FOREST MANAGEMENT UNIT COMPARTMENT REVIEW PRESENTATION COMPARTMENT # 22 ENTRY YEAR: 0 Compartment Acreage: 602 County: Kalkaska Stand Examiner: Dave Johnson Legal Description: T26N-R05W-Sections 8, 7 & Management Goals: Maintain age class distribution in aspen types and maintain current acreage of Upland brush and grass types Soil and Topography: Rubicon and Emmet Sands, Lupton Muck and Rifle Peat. Comp ranges from flood plain lowlands to rolling uplands. Ownership Patterns, Development, and Land Use in and Around the Compartment: Large block of state ownership with 2 parcels of private in Section. Seasonal homes or camps on private. Uses range mostly from fishing and hunting to ORV use. Unique, Natural Features: A large cedar swamp known as the Black Creek deer yard makes up most of section. Archeological, Historical, and Cultural Features: Several old railroad grades from the logging era are in section 8. Special Management Designations or Considerations: All state lands in Section 8 & 7 are currently under year Military Lease- limited activity. Watershed and Fisheries Considerations: Mark Tonello Black Creek flows through Compartment 22. Black Creek is a tributary to the Manistee River, and is a Designated Trout Stream. Black Creek is also covered under Manistee River Natural River zoning rules. Black Creek has been severely degraded by beavers in recent years, to the detriment of the brook trout that used to inhabit the stream. Therefore, for aspen clearcutting in Stand 30, please maintain at least a 300 buffer from Black Creek to discourage aspen regeneration in that area adjacent to the stream. Hopefully this will discourage further beaver colonization and over time the stream can recover. Wildlife Habitat Considerations: Mineral Resource and Development Concerns and/or Restrictions: Sections 8, 7, & 29, T26N-R5W, Surface sediments consist of ice-contact and glacial outwash sand and gravel and postglacial alluvium. The glacial drift thickness varies between 0 and 400 feet. Beneath the glacial drift are the Mississippian Marshall Sandstone and Coldwater Shale. The Marshall was previously used as a building stone. Gravel pits are not located in the area, but there is potential in Section 8. This area is located six miles southeast of the Niagaran reef trend. There are no leases currently in the Compartment, but the Compartment has been nominated for the October 08 lease auction.

Vehicle Access: No additional access needed Survey Needs: None Recreational Facilities and Opportunities: Kalkaska ORV Trail, Cranberry Lake Snowmobile Trail run through compartment. Broad range of fishing and hunting opportunities. Fire Protection: DNR Fire Protection is from the Kalkaska Field Office. Section is located in Zone 5, and as such has additional DNR units from Grayling, Houghton Lake, and Manton dispatched on a High fire day or above. Travel time for DNR units can allow for fires to build. Cover type can promote large fire growth. VFD protection is from the Bear Lake Fire Dept. Urban innerface is not a problem, as most of the compartment is state ownership. Additional Compartment Information: **** Cover type details, proposed treatments and stands designated as FDF are listed in the attached reports: Cover Type by Age Class Proposed Treatments No Limiting Factors Proposed Treatments With Limiting Factors **** The following information is displayed on the attached compartment maps: Base feature information, stand numbers, cover types Proposed treatments Proposed road access system

Some Oak sawlogs but they are not real good quality. There is a fair amount of White Pine along the edges of the stand and then scattered throughout. Once the aspen reaches maturity (about 0 years), a cut should be prescribed. 08 comments, treatment should take place in winter months to promote good sprouting. Report Date: 0/02/08 Traverse City Mgt. Unit Compartment: 22 DEDICATED CONSERVATION AREA DETAILS Page of * This is a list of Dedicated Biodiversity Areas for this compartment along with a /4 mile buffer surrounding the compartment. Refer to Dedicated Conservation Area Map for areas that the below listed Conservation Areas are located. Conservation Area Type Description ERA = Ecological Reference Area HCVA = High Conservation Value Area SCA = Special Conservation Area HCVA SCA Natural Rivers Archaeological Site There are two Natural Rivers datasets which are derived from spatial buffers set from an established and approved distance from the river centerlines. The Natural Rivers Zoning District is a 400 foot buffer for most Natural Rivers. The Vegetative Buffer ranges from 25 to 00 feet. To view specific Zoning Districts and Vegetative Buffers for each Natural River see the table located on the I:\Documentation\GDSE data folder. An aquatic or terrestrial area of the State that contains physical remains of human occupation. These are sites of cultural and historical significance that may occur upon terrestrial areas and Great Lakes bottomlands. They include thousands of Native American settlements and burial sites, as well as French and British outposts, nineteenth century logging camps, mines and homesteads. Beneath the waters of the Great Lakes, there are shipwrecks and other remains documenting the maritime trade. Such sites may be identified by Natural heritage data from the State Historic Preservation Office. Proposed treatments in this compartment will be implemented in such a manner as to maintain the integrity of these sites. Due to the sensitive nature of this information, no further detail about location is available. SCA Cold Water Stream A coldwater stream has temperature and dissolved oxygen conditions that allow naturally-reproduced or stocked trout populations and those of other coldwater fish species (e.g., slimy sculpin) to persist from year to year. Coldwater streams in Michigan typically provide these conditions due to substantial contributions of groundwater to their stream flows. Such streams are established by Director's action and designated as trout resources by Fisheries Order 20. SCA SCA Potential Old Growth Areas Research and Military Areas This category contains stands were identified for a broad range of reasons and were coded in the OI database as stand condition 8 as potential old growth (POG). Approximately 30,000 acres have been identified through the Operations Inventory (OI)/Compartment Review process. For stands in Year of Entry 08 and forward, potential old growth is managed for the identified objective until it is: ) vetted through the Biodiversity Conservation Planning Process (BCPP) and given a specific designation and objective (as an ERA, HCVA, or other type of SCA) and is released from the potential old growth designation; or 2) it is released from the potential old growth designation via the Compartment Review process. These areas provide facilities and lands specifically dedicated for research, or other purposes. They include the 5,847 acre Forest Fire Experiment Station, the 2,000 acre Houghton Lake Wildlife Research Area, the Beaver Islands Archipelago Wildlife Research Area (that includes most of Garden Island, all of High and Hog Islands, all state owned land on Beaver, South Fox and North Fox Islands), the Cusino Wildlife Research Area, the 3,000 acre Hunt Creek Fisheries Research Station, the 25 acre Wyman Nursery, and over 44,000 acres of Military Lands.
