Keeping the in Water-based and Luhydran products for interior furniture and fl ooring coatings 3 Keeping in the new of water-based coatings BASF is the world s leading chemical company. With six Verbund sites and close to 385 production sites worldwide we serve customers and partners in almost all countries of the world. Through new technologies, intelligent system solutions and -quality products in accordance with the principles of sustainable development we help our customes to be more successful. The biggest challenge within the industrial wood coatings industry today is providing environmentally sustainable products which offer the correct balance between coating properties and performance attributes. Over the years a variety of technologies has been developed by BASF in order to cope with the diversity of demand. Use of one technology over another is usually due to a number of factors such as regional market preferences, existing application systems, substrate choice and environmental pressures. The latter has led to the EEC VOC legislation directive which has become one of the major driving forces behind the conversion to water-based from solvent-based systems. This together with health, environmental and safety concerns including the risk of fires and the reduction in manufacturers insurance costs is continuing to push the conversion further. Due to the complexity of modern coatings, BASF works closely in partnership with its customers and value chain contacts in order to make customized innovative developments. The and Luhydran ranges are sucessfully used in a variety of water-based coatings for furniture and flooring applications. The advances made in the and Luhydran product ranges al the coatings formulator to convert from solvent-based to water-based systems. Protecting the environment by improved coatings for furniture and flooring. At BASF, we create chemistry.

4 Keeping the in Water-based and Luhydran products for interior furniture and fl ooring coatings The choice is in the water RC emulsions and Luhydran core shell acrylic dispersions BASF has a wide range of products for both interior and exterior wood coatings formulations. There are challenges in terms of performance and handling and usually there is a trade-off when choosing a certain technology. BASF technologies RC emulsions features and benefits The diversity of the and Luhydran product lines als you to choose from a wide range of water-based technology platforms. Coatings based on or Luhydran can be formulated according to the desired application method: spraying, f-coating, dipping or roller-coating. products Rheology-Controlled (RC) emulsions RC emulsions are surfactant-free. This is based on a process developed over 25 years ago. And because of excellent behavior in industrial applications it has become the benchmark in some industrial applications. The RC technology has been successfully expanded to other applications such as industrial wood coatings. products have been developed to meet market needs. All mentioned properties are of course important, but not always of equal importance. Therefore we focus on your customer s application to develop a solution that fits. The RC emulsions are characterized by the use of a -molecularweight acid-functional resin, produced by a proprietary process and used as the emulsion polymer stabilizer. features surfactant-free fine particle size excellent morphology: Tg MFT near-newtonian f behavior self-crosslinking Your benefits enhanced stability foaming at shear (pigment grinding directly into binder) easy handling clarity and gloss excellent (hot) block fast water release and film formation er coalescent demand fast drying excellent water and chemical good wet adhesion

These products are surfactant-based self-crosslinking or crosslinkable and particularly suitable for interior wood applications or as co-binders in some exterior applications.

6 Keeping the in Water-based and Luhydran products for interior furniture and fl ooring coatings Flexibility and application ease and Luhydran products have the balance between the right durability and application properties. A coating needs to have the combination of ingredients to offer both properties and durability versus application properties, for example, drying and good stackability. At BASF we are always striving to push our products to the limits. This is done by a number of internal and external weathering testing. On location in the Netherlands and in Germany we test the water, hail and UV outside at our weathering stations. For extreme weather conditions, external test methods such as Florida exposure are also used. BASF testing methods BASF has a set of vigorous test methods which have been developed based on years of experience within the exterior joinery industry which meet or exceed current European standards, e.g., EN-927-1/5, DIN 68861b, IKEA R-4. We provide customers with the results which can help them add value to their coatings. Transfer on -speed lines The transfer on -speed lines is optimized by using RC emulsions and Luhydran dispersions developed for optimal transfer. This increases the hiding power and reduces the number of layers in your customer s system. Low grain raising, deep penetration and good color development are very important for primers or single coats. Water-based systems tend to develop certain grain-raising effects. Our products are able to minimize this effect by using proprietary polymeric surfactant and small-particle-sized emulsions. This als very quick water release and film forming, thereby avoiding wood fiber swelling. Ease of application RC acrylic emulsions offer near-newtonian f characteristics or solution-like viscosity at both and shear rates. The benefits are excellent f, leveling and ease of paint manufacturing. In general, RC emulsions offer good freeze-thaw, ph-induced viscosity stability and solvent-shock, resulting in er production efficiency.

8 Keeping the in Water-based and Luhydran products for interior furniture and fl ooring coatings Up to the challenge Application test methods Resistance to moisture water uptake, early water and wet adhesion Self-crosslinking products from the and Luhydran ranges offer fast water release and optimal film formation. These characteristics play a major role in forming protection against moisture. Hot block drying speed and stackability Drying speed is the primary need in driving the conversion from solvent- to water-based systems. Production lines are getting faster and faster. BASF s water-based polymers provide fast water release and good film formation, thus fast drying and early block or stackability. In-can clarity gloss and transparency The Rheology-Controlled acrylic emulsion range is known for its really clear, almost solution-like, behavior. The unique RC technology offers a leading edge in appearance, resulting in good gloss and transparency of the coating film.

Keeping the in Water-based and Luhydran products for interior furniture and fl ooring coatings 9 Sanding production efficiency Our products are easy to sand: for both hand sanding and machine sanding. Chemical maintaining appearance The surface is coated and a substance such as water, acetone, coffee or wine is applied and covered. After various measurements in time, the surface is inspected for changes in color, brightness, grain enhancement and any other surface defects. Scratch/mechanical flexibility of coating film, Taber 1 abrasion test and falling sand BASF products provide excellent mechanical to, for example, extreme weather conditions such as hail. and Luhydran products provide the right combination of film toughness and elasticity to provide protection against surface defects. The Taber 1 abrasion test is universally used in the parquet coatings market.

10 Keeping the in Water-based and Luhydran products for interior furniture and fl ooring coatings The right combinations Optimal film formation VOC reduction the correct selection of coalescents in a formulation is very important for a stable formulation for achieving block and good film forming properties. 12 Keeping the in Water-based and Luhydran products for interior furniture and fl ooring coatings Keeping the in Interior wood coatings line The interior wood market is very diverse. It includes segments such as assembled contemporary furniture, assembled reproduction or antique furniture, kitchen and bathroom cabinets, and also includes self-assembled furniture (flatstock) for living rooms, bedrooms, kitchens and bathrooms, office furniture and flooring. Due to local preferences coating requirements vary enormously across countries. The interior wood market an overview Over the whole of Western Europe, - to medium-quality self-assembly flatstock furniture has become increasingly popular. This furniture market model gives the consumers the opportunity to change their interior as fashion trends change for a reasonable price and with easy accessibility to new products. Large furniture manufacturers serve the whole intra- European region. Like in exterior applications, automation and industrialization of the wooden furniture production market has led to a demand in systems which reduce coating costs but at the same time meet environmental pressures. Coating suppliers want to move away from conventional technologies like nitrocellulose and acid-curing to 1K water-based and 2K water-based systems. Some large European furniture manufacturers are playing a major role in enforcing stringent demands to reduce VOC outputs even in non-european production locations like China. The coating has to fulfil essentially two major requirements: physically appealing protective and long-wearing The right combination has to be found between these requirements: gloss, color and feel with sufficient surface properties to hot and cold liquids and household chemicals and mechanical such as scratch and abrasion. In the furniture industry there is a multitude of standards regionally. Our products are tested according to IKEA standards, DIN 68681 and other European standards.

Keeping the in Water-based and Luhydran products for interior furniture and fl ooring coatings 13 1K and 2K water-based systems RC emulsion and self-crosslinking Luhydran product lines have been discussed earlier. Other technologies available within the BASF water-based wood coatings portfolio for interior coatings are the polyurethane dispersions ( U) and hybrids and the 2K water-based systems which can be combined with the acrylic emulsions for enhanced surface properties. For water-based 2K systems with hydroxy functionality and self-crosslinking chemistries where er performance is required, and Luhydran can be combined with polyurethane polymers and self-crosslinking chemistries.
