Data Generation on Board. Big Data. Considering that Data is not information, therefore the vast amounts of data generated on board need to be adequately treated to extract / access the information contained in it. Big Data by definition: Big Data is an evolving term that describes any voluminous amount of structured, semi-structured and unstructured data that is difficult to process using traditional database techniques but has the potential to be mined for information. Data is a company resource! Data is a resource on its own! 13

What is Big Data good for? Big Data is a sort of vehicle that contains relevant information to your business enabling: Fast and accurate decision making based on facts; Intelligent operation of all your productive system; Involvement of all processes of the company; Identification of business inefficiencies (MIT report, shows that companies perform 5-6% better each year); Know the actual condition of your organization; Know better the competitors of your organizationlocal performance monitoring and optimization Condition based and predictive maintenance Predict failures before they happen Delay expensive maintenance that may not be required yet; Repair on board with remote help; Technical data transfer. 14

How to Use Fleet Generated Data most effectively? Information by definition is related with knowledge, and communication. Most ships have the capacity of generating vast amounts of operational data. Most of such data, is treated in a non effective way, consuming money and human resources to analyze it, therefore not improving business as it could, creating skepticism's. The reasons for such non effective data treatment are: Out of time; Out of context; Without care, or accuracy; Results are not delivered to the right persons; 15

The Cube of Ship Generated Data Humans have their own limit to digest data. Therefore Persons should not be overloaded with Data, that it is not required to develop their functions. DATA 16

CHANGING MINDSETS TO GET ADVANTAGE OF BIG DATA Organizations compete in a wild business environment, so their survival depends on how efficient they may run their operations. To make use of the information hidden on the Big Data it is a crucial for business success. 17

DATA GENERATION ON BOARD.BIG DATA. 18

DATA GENERATION ON BOARD Most ships of our days, are fully automated, equipped with advanced monitoring systems, therefore capable of producing large amounts of data. Although those ships monitoring systems are producing a lot of data, only a small part of it is properly treated by the ship crew and technical staff ashore. The main reasons, are: People on board are too busy (smaller crews); Crew members are not adequately trained; Crew members may not be really interested, resulting into Data inaccuracies; Crews may not see data monitoring as a friendly operation, but as the Big Brother ; The vessel operates under different weather conditions; The results generated from actual data reporting are not sufficiently good to engage crew and shore personnel. Vessels performance is a very wide concept that is dependent of: Human behavior; Marine environment; Market environment; Technology level; 19

How To Implement a VEEO and BOEM-S? Select Collect Process Exploit Predict Anticipate Which Systems Which Variables Which Conditions From Where Frequency Valorize Calculate Filter Identification Interpretation Comparison Distribution Proofing Forecast Evaluation Pro Action Evaluation Data Transfer Rate for 60 variables (3 minutes updates): 1 Mb/hour 20

How To Implement a VEEO and BOEM-S? Key variables are the ones that affect the system performance? How is the variation of key variables affect the system performance? Which are the variables allowable ranges to operate the system with acceptable performance? How to interpret the variations of variables? Selection of minimum number of variables Monitoring conditions Definition of alarms Source of knowledge Skilled people, Expert systems 21

VEEO, Ship Performance System Type Approved by ABS, NATO Certified! VEEO Ship Performance System is based upon TecnoVeritas interfacing automation technology at three different levels of equipment and software modules. The system on-board was designed to assist crews in optimising the fuel consumption of the vessel, and to monitor performance and emissions in real time. Less energy, mean less fuel cost, better environment! VEEO is a Real-Time on-board decision support tool, permitting also the capture of key ship operation variables that allow the definition of vessel key performance indicators. 24

VEEO, Ship Performance System The VEEO Ship Performance System will simplify the establishment of SEEMP in compliance with IMO mandatory regulations as it collects operational data from all on board main energy converters such as main engines, auxiliary engines, boilers, propellers, etc., allowing the basis of the energy balance and therefore of the energy management of the vessel. Main propulsion shaft power Electrical power production Boiler steam production Cargo system 25

VEEO, Ship Performance System Fuel oil consumption VEEO can be set up to transmit the collected data directly ashore through various modes, namely to the cloud. The Software ashore is the BOEM-S, which will the perfect connection between ship and shore. BOEMS, is a Fleet Performance Management platform, which has the ability of crunching the raw data, filtering it and delivering it to the right persons. VEEO may be delivered as an integrated part of most automation systems (typically on new ships) or as a stand-alone installation (typically on existing ships). Meaningful customised user-friendly human-machine interfaces, of the various process involved are standard available, making an intuitive operation of the systems. 26
