A. General viii Highlights of Mineral Production April 2014 to March 2015 During the financial year 2014-15, the total value of mineral production (excluding atomic minerals and minor minerals and also excluding value for February and March in respect of 31 minerals notified as minor minerals w.e.f.10.02.2015 ) in the country was at Rs. 236554 crore indicating a nominal increase over the previous year. This was mainly due to increase in the production of Coal, Lignite, Lead Conc., Zinc Conc., Flourite, Kyanite, Limestone, Magnesite, Phosphorite and Vermiculite. The production of the minerals like Natural Gas (Ut.), Petroleum (Crude), Bauxite, Chromite, Copper Ore and Conc., Gold, Iron Ore, Manganese Ore, Silver, Tin Conc., Apatite, Diamond, Garnet (Abrasive), Graphite, Limeshell, Marl, Moulding Sand, Sillimanite, Selenite, Wollastonite etc. decreased during 2014-15. B. Index of Mineral Production The index of mineral production (base 2004-05=100) for the year 2014-15 was 126.5. An increase of 1.5 was observed during the year over the that of 2013-14 owing to increase in the production of coal, lignite, lead conc., zinc conc., flourite, kyanite, limestone, magnesite, phosphorite and vermiculite etc. The index of mineral production has shown an increase of about 2.9 in fuel minerals and 8.2 in non metallic minerals in the current year. However a decline of 13.7 over the previous year was indicated in metallic minerals. C. Reporting Mines The Reporting mine is defined as, "a mine reporting production or reporting 'Nil' production during a year but engaged in developmental work such as overburden removal, underground driving, winzing, sinking work; exploration by pitting, trenching or drilling as evident from the MCDR Returns". Total number of reporting mines (excluding atomic and minor minerals) during 2014-15 decreased to 3524 as compared to 3979 in the preceding year. The number of mines in fuel group of minerals excluding petroleum (crude) and natural gas (utilised) was 552, metallic group of minerals was 637 and in the case of non-metallic group of minerals it was 2335. In the total number of mines in 2014-15, among major states, Rajasthan accounted for as many as 541 or 15.4, Andhra Pradesh 470 or 13.3 mines, Gujarat 410 or 11.6, Madhya Pradesh 376 or 10.7, Tamil Nadu 292 or 8.3, Jharkhand 224 or 6.4, Chhattisgarh 215 or 6.1, Karnataka 183 or 5.2, Odisha 172 or 4.9, Maharashtra 162 or 4.6 Telangana 154 or 4.4 and West Bengal 119 or 3.4 percent.
