The Property Bureau consists of three part time evidence custodians. The position reports to the Special Operations Division Captain. The Evidence Custodian position requires the ability to learn and apply departmental policies and guidelines, International Association for Property & Evidence (IAPE) best practices, and applicable laws and statutes governing the acceptance, preservation, safeguarding and disposition of found, recovered, or evidentiary property. The Evidence Custodian is responsible for safeguarding the integrity and chain-of-custody of evidence and other property, ensuring proper packaging, preservation and handling. The work schedule is part time and flexible, but will normally require coverage Monday Friday, 8:00am to 5:00pm. The duties described below are indicative of what the Evidence Custodian might be asked to perform. Other duties may be assigned. This job description incorporates any municipal ordinances created for the position of Evidence Custodian. The Evidence Custodian performs administrative and manual work related to the acceptance, preservation, safeguarding and disposition of found, recovered, or evidentiary property in accordance with law and departmental policy and procedures. Stays up to date on local, state, and federal laws involving property/evidence handling and recommend appropriate changes. 6. Releases evidentiary items to authorized law enforcement or criminal justice personnel. 7. Releases copies of evidentiary items as requested and authorized. 8. Reviews security controls at primary and alternative property and storage locations. 9.
