OF INDIA Invitation for participation A National training programme on Weather based management of Livestock and Poultry for Integrated Agromet Advisory Services (IAAS) Scientists from different State Agricultural Universities, Assistant Professors in Krishi Vigyan Kendras and State Agricultural Universities is scheduled to be organized by Integrated Agromet Advisory Services, Chennai, Department of Livestock Production and Management Madras Veterinary College Chennai 600 007 from 04.03.2013 to 08.03.2013 1. Background Agriculture and animal husbandry activities are very sensitive to climate and weather condition. The various climatic factors viz temperature, relative humidity, air velocity and rainfall have direct and indirect influence on the productivity of the farm animals. Hence it is imperative on the part of technical professionals involved in Animal Production to fully understand the influence of these climatic factors on productivity of farm animals in order to evolve suitable management practices for sustaining their productivity. The training will equip the scientists in advising the farmers in general and livestock farmers in particular regarding the ameliorative measures to mitigate the negative influence of the climatic variables on the farm animal productivity. Hence the present training programme has been planned with the following specific objectives. 1. To impart basic knowledge about the impact of weather on livestock and poultry 2. To educate the trainees in assessing the relationship between animal production and microclimatic conditions in the respective localities. 3. To prepare the trainees to include weather based animal/poultry advisories regularly in their bulletins

Course Information The National Training programme for five days will be conducted from 04.03.2013 to 08.03.2013 for Integrated Agromet Advisory Services (IAAS) Scientists from different State Agricultural Universities, Assistant Professors in Krishi Vigyan Kendras and State Agricultural Universities. The course content will include importance of weather forecasting on animal husbandry activities viz., deworming and vaccination schedules for livestock, cultivation practices for fodder crops, incorporation of livestock related advisories etc. Number of participants will be restricted to 25 in this training programme. 3. Salient features of course content The course includes: Scenario of dairy, small ruminants and poultry in Tamil Nadu and India Importance of Weather Forecasting on livestock and poultry through AAS An overview Climate change and Production losses in livestock farming Importance of Designing of animal shelters for combating extreme weather Influence of heat stress on reproductive efficiency of dairy cattle and buffalo Meteorogical elements that influence production / health in poultry Strategies in alleviating the environmental stress in commercial layers / broiler Weather based animal disease monitoring and surveillance Preparedness and measures to be taken to protect the livestock during natural disaster Strategies to improve fodder production under changing weather pattern Traditional methods and indigenous technologies for coping with climate variability Dissemination of agromet advisories through KVKs and NGOS Hands on practical Field trip 4. Faculty The Faculty will include scientists from Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Krishi Vigyan Kendras, IMD, and also from SAUs and SVUs

The training period would be the most comfortable season in Chennai with temperatures ranging from 23 o C to 35 o C 8. Accommodation & TA/DA Support The boarding and lodging facilities and TA will be provided by us / funding agency. 9. 10. Selection procedure Applicants working in Agromet Field units and expected to work for preparation of Agromet Advisory Service bulletins in future would be preferred. The applicant should possess a Master degree in Agriculture / Veterinary / Meteorology, must be less than 50 years of age as on 20 th March. 2013. However, selection will be on first come-first come first served basis. 11.
