Kaolin is chemically inert and impervious, making it useful for improving barrier properties. Calcined Kaolin Calcined kaolin clay is produced when hydrous kaolin is heated to over 1000 C. The crystal structure collapses, and the material becomes amorphous. The rearrangement of the crystal structure of kaolin which comes with a loss of hydroxyl groups makes calcined clays harder, more abrasive and more porous than their water washed counterparts. Ultrafine Hydrous Kaolin Polygloss 90 and KaMin HG90 are ultrafine, high brightness, hydrous kaolin products engineered to optimize your pigment performance. Narrow Particle Size Distribution Benefits Tightly controlled particle size and particle size distribution allow Polygloss 90 and KaMin HG90 to effectively replace a portion of titanium dioxide without sacrificing important properties such as opacity, gloss, or tint strength. KaMin s dry products are available in two physical forms, spray-dried bead and milled powder. Since kaolin is inherently hydrophilic, spray-dried products are only dispersible in waterborne systems with high speed mixing. Milled products are readily dispersible in any system, waterborne or solvent borne. After full dispersion, each spray-dried product will perform identically to its milled counterpart. Similarly, when testing other properties, such as stain resistance, block resistance, reflectance, and viscosity, no significant variances were shown. In order to maintain gloss, Polygloss 90 and KaMin HG90 should be substituted for titanium dioxide at equivalent pigment volume concentration. To maintain equivalent volume, one part by weight of TiO2 should be replaced with about 0.65 parts by weight of Polygloss 90 or KaMin HG90. Paint Study 4

KaMin 70C will give better durability properties, including scrub resistance and stain resistance, than higher oil absorption calcined clays. KaMin 70C is well-suited to provide burnish resistance and excellent touchup. KaMin 2000C Milled Powder 0.6 6 65 93 KaMin 2000C is a high-brightness calcined clay, and provides high levels of opacity in high-pvc paints and coatings. It is designed to give a good balance of properties, providing good opacity while maintaining scrub resistance. Ultrafine water washed Polygloss 90 Polygloss 90 is the premier extender in satin, semi-gloss, and high gloss coatings. Its high brightness, platy morphology and tightly controlled, ultrafine particle size distribution provide the best titanium dioxide spacing without an impact on color, or a reduction in opacity or gloss. Polygloss 90 s unique processing allows it to be easily dispersed in any coating system, waterborne, solvent-borne, or 100% solids. KaMin HG90 Milled Powder 0.2 7 91 Spray-Dried Bead 0.2 7 91 KaMin HG90 has many of the same advantages as Polygloss 90 once dispersed, including the excellent color and extension properties. It is supplied in a spray-dried form, which allows for more efficient shipping, lower dusting, and improved flowability and handling. KaMin HG90 may be dispersed in waterborne systems under high shear. Fine water washed KaMin 90/90B Milled Powder/Spray-Dried Bead 0.4 7 43 88 KaMin 90 is a standard brightness extender recommended for intermediate to high gloss coatings. Its particle size distribution is excellent for dense particle packing, allowing efficient use of resin and good barrier properties. KaMin 80/80B Milled Powder/Spray-Dried Bead 0.5 7 87 KaMin 80 is an economical extender for satin and semi-gloss paints and coatings. It provides cost effective extension of titanium dioxide and resin. KaMin 611 Spray-Dried Bead 0.4 5 88 KaMin 611 is an extender designed for systems where low ph or low soluble salt content is desirable. KaMin 611 s low ph and custom dispersant package make it more suitable for use in e-coat systems. Coarse/delaminated water washed KaMin 35/35B Milled Powder/Spray-Dried Bead 4.0 7 27 83 KaMin 35 is the coarsest clay product offered by KaMin. The low oil absorption and low binder demand make KaMin 35 effective at extending low gloss paints and primers, as well as stains and other pigmented coatings. Its minimal impact on viscosity is useful in low-voc coatings. The blocky, large particles provide micro-surface roughness, leading to improved inter-coat adhesion. Polyplate P01/P 7 0.8 Polyplate P01 is a standard particle size, delaminated clay suited for use in flat to semi-gloss coatings. It is a useful extender in primers as well as anywhere barrier properties are desired. Polyplate HMT Milled Powder/Spray-Dried Bead Spray-Dried Bead 1.2 7 Polyplate HMT is a coarse, delaminated, spray-dried clay product suitable for use in flat and eggshell paints and coatings. The large, platy particles provide good physical coating properties, as well as some light scattering in systems with a low pigment loading level, such as stains. 88 88 5 Product Selection Guide
