Disruption of cells in the downstream processing of fermentation products. (d) Fermentation productivity. How ammonium sulfate precipitates proteins. 3/-

- 3 - PART B. Answer TWO questions only. 2. Answer all parts of this question. Explain the importance of aeration for fermentation. How can it be assured that sufficient air supply is obtained by the cells grown, and what is/are the effect/s if the requirement is not fulfilled? (10 marks) Table 1 (Appended) shows the readings obtained from an experiment to measure the K L a of a fermenter using the Dynamic Gassing Out method. Write an essay giving an outline on the operation of a feasible fermentation plant in Malaysia for a product of your choice, with priority given on the use of a suitable local substrate. Include in your essay, ways on how the production of the product can be maximized, and the cost, minimized. (20 marks) 4. Write short notes on the following. (d) Fed batch fermentation.
