The first process and primary packaging phase is the most delicate one, as the direct contact with the product (that may be food, pharmaceutical or cosmetic) requires solutions that do not contaminate or cannot be contaminated. In this phase it is also essential to assure reliability and flexibility, in order to process different products without reducing the efficiency of the equipment (OEE). Typically, the next phase is represented by secondary packaging, that includes one or more primary containers. In this phase the wrap, that is not in contact with the product, wraps or contains different primary containers. Then it is closed and labelled, to go on to the following process. The secondary processing requires very high production cycles. As a consequence, it is essential to use reliable, efficient and robust components. The last phase is represented by tertiary packaging, in which the combination of more containers (primary or secondary) are packed together to safely and easily move and perform all other logistical operations. This phase is represented by large sized wrapping machines, palletizers, labellers and casepackers that work with lower dynamics, but with major loads and as a consequence robust, but energy efficient components are needed. 7
PROCESSING FROM THE PRODUCT TO THE PACKAGING Control and handling technologies for every step of the production process. Every operation involved in the packaging line has different requirements that can be satisfied in the best way possible thanks to the use of a specific technology: pneumatic or electric or the integration of both. Pneumatic technology is widely used in packaging machinery as it is typically cleaner, lighter, more reliable and compact when compared to other actuation technologies. Electromechanic actuation complements the pneumatic actuation as it provides greater control over axis position, speed and acceleration.
