A real world application of blockchain Norbert Kouwenhoven, norbert.kouwenhoven@nl.ibm.com IBM, GTD Borders STM Conference, September 12, Venice 1
What if we had Instant, secure access to E2E supply chain information Authenticity and immutability of digital documents Accurate ETA Sharing, avoiding the truck missing the ship Improved ETA calculation (weather, queues) allowing optimised speed and fuel use Early, better, risk assessments and fewer unnecessary interventions by authorities Lower administrative expenses eliminating paper flows across borders Estimated annual global savings from efficient sharing of information: $27 billion Exporter Trucker Authority Forwarder Terminal Authority Authority Carrier 2 Consignee
Mission: Improve the efficiency and transparency of global supply chains by providing - permissioned access to key shipping events and - Secure, digitized document workflows to all supply chain participants 10% efficiency savings 3
Why GTD will fundamentally change the industry Blockchain changes the game Never before could disparate entities securely and confidently process paperwork filings digitally GTD is designed from the ground up as an industry platform The end-to-end supply chain will be involved The ecosystem will continuously shape the solution GTD will be iteratively developed based on ongoing, continuous input and feedback from platform participants Moving fast In modern economies speed and scale are critical. Building the network fast is the key to success BLOCKCHAIN Balanced funding Unchangeable data (in blocks) GTD will be funded by a transaction fee levied on private sector participants. There will be no transaction fee for government authorities. IBM and Maersk have kicked this off and will see this through An unmatched vision, global reach, executive commitment, and ability to execute in markets around the world Stored in a sequence (the chain) Distributed across organisations (the business network) Enforcing agreed rules (using smart contracts)
With GTD, the entire supply chain ecosystem shares a single trusted view of shipping events and documents Export & Authorities Import Exporter / BCO 3PL Service Provider Inland Transportation Port / Terminal Authorities Port / Terminal 3PL Service Providers Inland Transportation Importer / Consignee Not exhaustive list of Events tracked by GTD Shipping Information Pipeline Start container tracking Empty container picked up ETA Empty container at inland location ETA Empty container at inland location Container stuffed VGM filled Container sealed Full container picked up from stuffing site Estimated gate in gate in full for export ETD container from terminal Full container loaded Export declaration cleared MRN number issued ATD container from terminal ETA container at terminal Temperature read Container discharge estimated Import declaration cleared Container selected for inspection ATA container at terminal Full container discharged Estimated gate out Gate out full for import ETA full container at inland location ATA full container at inland location Sealed removed Container de-stuffed Empty container ready for pick-up Empty container picked-up Empty container arrived at empty depot Container tracking ended Not exhaustive set of documents processed by GTD Paperless Trade Blockchain Network Packing List Bill of Lading Export Declaration Declaration Commercial Invoice Certificate of Origin Inspection Certificate ISF Phytosanitary Certificate Dangerous Goods Declaration Clearance EUR 1 Available Container Arrival Notice
A dashboard SHIPPING INFORMATION PIPELINE PAPERLESS TRADE The Event Visibility Dashboard allows users to securily publish and subscribe to SIP data without using a third party system of engagement. A dashboard enables users to search for and drill down into a specific shipment or group of shipments. The Paperless Trade app allows users to upload and store, review, stamp, and approve document filings. Workflow driven by Hyperledger smart contracts ensure all required approvals are in place.
