Kittitas County Fire District 7 POSITION DESCRIPTION Class Title: Lead Mechanic Department: Fire Division: Support Services Date: April 2016 Updated: April 2016 Location: Maintenance Shop This is a full-time, salaried, non-union, overtime eligible position. The position works independently but is part of a team with other District members. GENERAL PURPOSE Performs semi-skilled, skilled, specialized and administrative work in maintaining the vehicle fleet and mechanical equipment of the Fire District. Also performs mechanical work of a similar nature for other agencies as required through signed agreements. SUPERVISION RECEIVED Works under the general supervision of the Assistant Chief in charge of Support Services but may be reassigned to the Deputy Chief of Operations as necessary. SUPERVISION EXERCISED Oversees the work and performance functions of the part-time shop mechanics. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Plans, carries out and evaluates preventive maintenance schedules for all vehicles and mechanical equipment, either personally, or through outside vendors. Oversees the work assignments of full-time and part-time mechanics. Trains, motivates, and evaluates assigned staff. Reviews progress and directs changes as needed; tracks and approves leave time, and reviews monthly timesheets for accuracy. Operates a variety of diagnostic instruments and a variety of hand, electric, and airdriven tools. Routinely tests, services and repairs vehicles and mechanical equipment. 1

Inspects, adjusts and replaces necessary units and related parts in the performance of repair and maintenance work. Repairs brake, engine, electrical, fuel (gas and diesel systems), hydraulic, transmission, ignition, air, exhaust, axle assemblies and related systems. Cuts and welds metal and performs minor body repair, touch up and related work. Changes and repairs tires and tubes. Routinely evaluates status of mechanical equipment and vehicles, and performs or schedules needed repairs. Conducts various analysis and inspection of vehicles and mechanical systems to determine the most cost-effective means of maintenance, repair or replacement. Develops shop procedures and budget data for the maintenance and repair of vehicles and mechanical systems. Purchases equipment, parts, and supplies used for vehicle and mechanical system maintenance. Provides emergency field assistance to disabled equipment as needed and appropriate. Assists in the preparation of bid specifications for vehicles and mechanical equipment. Assists in the preparation and administration of mechanical budgets in conformance with adopted policies and procedures. Maintains records, prepares reports and other specialized maintenance records of equipment and mechanical equipment. PERIPHERAL DUTIES May serve as a member of various employee committees. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education and Experience: (A) Graduation from high school diploma or GED equivalent plus some specialized training in mechanics, maintenance management, or a closely related field. (B) Five (5) years of certified experience as a Journeyman Diesel Mechanic, and/or five (5) years as a Journeyman Automotive Mechanic. (C) Any equivalent combination of education and experience. 2

(D) Ability to successfully pass a background check. Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: (A) Thorough knowledge of automotive mechanics; thorough knowledge of gas and diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulics, fire pumps and valves, generators, and welding; price trends and grades or quality of materials and equipment; Working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions common to municipal maintenance and repair activities; Working knowledge of the practices, methods, materials and tools used in modern equipment maintenance. (B) Skill in operation of listed tools and equipment. (C) Ability to establish and maintain effective preventive maintenance programs, policies and procedures; Ability to maintain effective accounting procedures; Ability to carry out assigned projects to their completion; Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, vendors and the public. DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS (A) Two (2) years experience as a Fire Department mechanic. (B) ASE/EVT Certifications as follows or ability to secure within 1 year of employment: 1. Light Duty Fire Apparatus 2. Heavy Duty Fire Apparatus 3. EMS Truck/Ambulance Technician SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS Valid Washington State Driver's with CDL endorsement without record of suspension of revocation in any state. Provide own hand tools, up to and including one-half inch drive sockets. TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED Motorized vehicles for mechanical testing purposes, power and hand tools and equipment for vehicle and mechanical system work; mechanic's tools including jacks, hydraulic lifts, air tools, and other tools required for minor repairs and routine maintenance of motorized vehicles; electronic vehicle diagnostic equipment; personal computer, calculator, phone; mobile or portable radio and fax machine. 3
