CSM Nano-Tribometer * Features of the Nano-Tribometer CALL US for a DEMO! Laboratory Service Also Available High Resolution attained with unique glass spring force sensor design Ultra-precision piezo actuated movements Precisely calibrated friction and wear measurements Linear and Rotating sample movement Sample Heating Option Pin, Ball and Plate on Plate testing Automatic switch off at threshold coefficient of friction or total number of turns Test in liquids and in controlled humidity or inert gases with Plexiglas enclosure Testing compatible with ASTM G99 & DIN 50324 Continuous wear depth measurement Continuous electrical contact recording (optional) Precision engineered in Switzerland by CSM. Introduction to the Pin-on-Disk Tribometer In pin-on-disk tribometry, a flat, a pin or a sphere is loaded onto the test sample with a precisely known weight. The pin is mounted on a stiff lever, designed as a frictionless force transducer. The friction coefficient is determined during the test by measuring the deflection of the elastic arm. Wear coefficients for the pin and disk material are calculated from the volume of material lost during the test. This simple method facilitates the study of friction and wear behavior of almost every solid state material combination with or without lubricant. Furthermore, the control of the test parameters such as speed, frequency, contact pressure & varying time and environmental parameters such as temperature, humidity & lubricant allows to closely reproduce the real life conditions of a practical wear situation. * Information on the instruments are subject to change, please contact us for updates The CSM Nano-tribometer is a unique instrument because of its low load range down to 50microN. It

can perform both the linear reciprocating mode and pin-on-disk. One important feature of all the CSM Tribometer is that the wear stops automatically when the coefficient of friction reaches a threshold value or when a specified number of turns is reached. Also the Tribometer is supplied with an enclosure so that controlled atmospheres of varying humidity or composition can be used. Specialized versions of the Tribometer have been developed for high & low temperature operations, reciprocating motion and high vacuum testing. The Nano-tribometer is equipped with a depth measuring sensor for realtime display of depth information which is important in studying the time dependant wear properties. Furthermore, an electrical conductivity option can enable testing of electrical insulation of coatings. Linear Reciprocating Tribometer The Linear Tribometer reproduces the reciprocating motion typical of many real world mechanisms. The instrument produces a friction coefficient for both the forward and backward movements of the stroke and the software can generate data on Hertzian pressure, static partner and sample wear rates. the reciprocating technique is also very useful for studying the variation over time of the static coefficient of friction - as opposed to the kinetic coefficient measured with the Pin-on-Disk geometry. Most contact geometries can be reproduced including Pin-on-Plate, Ball-on-Plate and Flat-on-Plate (others on request). The Linear Tribometer can be equipped with a heating and cooling plate for testing under a wide variety of temperatures. A complete software package for tribology studies The Tribometry software (Microsoft Windows 98/NT/2000 platforms) includes a complete set of features for setting up the Tribometer and handling the data. Real time display of friction coefficient, temperature, depth, pin-substrate electrical contact (optional) Easy setup of all the test parameters including rotational speed, frequency, number of laps, threshold coefficient of friction, temperature and time. Calculates automatically mean coefficient of friction, standard deviation and maximum and minimum values from designated parts of the trace. Editing of tests information including coating, substrate, cleaning, supplier, geometry, lubricant and dimensions. Two user channels are available for simultaneous display of supplemental data such as temperature and humidity. Wear rates calculation of partner and sample. Calculation of the Hertzian stress. Data export in ASCII format.
