Science for food security and sustainable agriculture Agreenium, the French Consortium for research and education in agriculture, food and nutrition, animal health, and the environment

International agronomic research in the 21st century faces demographic, environmental and energy-production challenges, calling for a double revolution: a global approach to agriculture and food systems, and an increased but environmentally friendly productivity. At the same time, research and higher education have become highly competitive at an international level. In this context, France seeks to meet the growing needs for innovation and transfer of know-how in agronomy by setting up a new and more effective organisation. Agreenium is a public establishment, founded by major players in agronomic and veterinary research and higher education: INRA, CIRAD, AgroParisTech, Montpellier SupAgro, Agrocampus Ouest, and the national veterinary school in Toulouse. It provides united and coordinated French skills at an international level. It covers the fields of agriculture, food, animal health and the environment, combining research, education and innovation. Through an effect of synergy and cooperation, Agreenium provides the French research system with a structure which can play a greater role in international agronomic research. By bringing together research and higher education, Agreenium fosters collaboration with counterparts around the world. Developing skills for the South, collaboration with many OECD and developing countries, and the ability to cover the whole chain of innovation, are all invaluable assets for revitalizing agriculture and food production worldwide. But above all, Agreenium also aims to boost and foster concrete actions requiring research, training and development. The main focus of its work is to set up high-level research-based training courses, to give access to doctoral studies at international level, to foster international mobility, to develop new models for agriculture, food, and the sustainable management of resources and land, in both the North and the South, in order to meet the challenges of agricultural intensification and sustainable food production. We believe that these projects will be the start of rich and fruitful international collaborations with which to meet the global challenges facing agronomic research. Marion Guillou President of Agreenium Agreenium is legal entity for scientific cooperation between public institutions created by a decree dated 10th May 2009 by the Ministries for Agriculture Food and Fisheries, Higher Education and Research, and European and Foreign Affairs. Two top agricultural research organisations (INRA CIRAD) and four higher education institutions (AgroParisTech Agrocampus Ouest Montpellier SupAgro ENV Toulouse) gather their forces within Agreenium, the French Consortium for research and education in agriculture, food and nutrition, animal health, and the environment. Additional research and higher education institutions may in the future join Agreenium as full or associate partners. Agreenium will promote programmes and actions combining research, education and training, and development at a European and international scales.
