Municipal Water Treatment Systems Hydrated Lime Systems Hydrated lime is used by many water utility companies to improve water quality. With over 50 years of experience associated with hydrated lime, Portasilo has developed a signature lime system design to deal with some of the complex problems associated with this product. These include: Silo/system over pressurisation, silo over filling, loss of live storage, ineffective discharge aids, volumetric over/under dosing, jammed conveyors, dust emissions, incorrect mixer and tank design. The Portasilo signature design includes; Reverse jet cleaned filters Differential pressure monitoring Pressure relief valves Ultrasonic or loadcell silo gauging Silo self emptying, no dead zones Automatic shut-off valve Gravimetric dosing Mechanical discharge valve, no bridging, no preferential flow, guaranteed lime discharge every time Automatically backwashed vent filters 4 Powerful downward flow axial flow turbine mixer Accurate dosing and complete mixing give consistent Milk of Lime quality Powerful agitator and dished bottom ensure complete mixing and complete emptying, without build-up
Quicklime Systems Portasilo Bulk Handling Systems has developed a Lime Slaking system to maximise the advantage of using BLI fine ground, high reactivity Quicklime. This produces a consistently high quality Milk of Lime. Weight for weight, it has a higher neutralising value than conventional lime slurries. The Portasilo Slaking System has been developed around a Single Stage Process involving no second stage grit removal or waste carryover, thus resulting in a simple and robust, trouble-free plant. Major Benefits Complete Package Simple and Robust High Reliability Low Operational Costs No Grit Removal (no waste)...with reliable, automatic control Designed as a complete, stand alone package, the Portasilo plant has a fully integrated PLC control system, which ensures a safe and consistent, high quality slurry preparation. The system automatically controls quicklime storage, discharge, weighing, water flow, temperature monitoring, pumping and dosing. This provides the user with a package that is self sufficient, requiring minimal operator intervention. The twin slurry preparation systems provide maximum flexibility in slurry production with the added benefit of offering full standby capability. Portasilo systems in active service show greater than 99% availability and low maintenance requirements, thus emphasising the high reliability, low operational cost benefits of this system. Alternative dosing systems are available for lower volume users. 5
Powder Activated Carbon Systems PAC (Powder Activated Carbon) is used to remove trace organic compounds from treated water. These organic compounds effect the taste, colour and odour associated with algae in potable water drawn from a reservoir or raw water supply. PAC is a particularly tricky material to handle, since it aerates very easily and behaves much like a fluid. To allow for these properties, Portasilo has designed a system to resolve these issues. From the hoppers, a PMU (precision metering unit) is used to deliver a precisely controlled trickle of PAC into the eductor. Inside the eductor itself, a small spray of water is added to entrain the PAC before it is sucked down into the potable water below by a vacuum created by the motive water supply. To ensure accurate PAC dosing, the potable water needs to flow below the eductor at a predesigned velocity. The kiosk houses both the eductors, booster pumps and, in a separate room, the associated MCC ensuring easy access and control of the plant. A typical PAC dosing system can feature either a vertical or horizontal storage silo. Typically with PAC a horizontal storage silo with twin discharge screw outlets feeding into two horizontal parallel screw conveyors, providing duty standby from the storage vessel. Inclined screw conveyors feed into a horizontal bi-directional screw conveyor, which feeds two intermediate hoppers. Automatic level detectors connected to the motors that feed the PAC into the vessels ensure that the hoppers remain loaded with PAC at all times. 6
Polymer/flocculant Systems In some waters where coagulation is poor, polymers are used as a coagulant aid. Typical aids are clay, silica and more commonly polyelectrolytes. Working with our Polymer and chemical dosing suppliers, Portasilo can supply full turnkey systems for polyelectrolyte storage and handling. We can provide; The polymer storage silo, powder polymer preparation system, disperser, and mixing and storage module to operate with liquid and powder polymer feedstock and dosing pumps. 7
Sludge Treatment Systems Dried sewage sludge Systems Hydrated lime and quicklime can be used for cost effective treatment of human waste sludge's (i.e, bio-solids). Lime treatment controls the environment needed for the growth of pathogens in biosolids and converts sludge into a usable product. The addition of Hydrated Lime in wastewater sludge s can create ph levels as high as 12.4. At ph levels greater than 12, harmful pathogens are destroyed, stabilizing sludge with no risk of pathogen re-growth. When quicklime is used, an exothermic reaction with water occurs. This heat release can increase the temperature of the biological waste to approx 70ºC, which provides effective pasteurisation. In doing so, the CaO combines with 32% of it s own weight of water thus causing a significant drying effect and a temperature increase. The addition of lime also increases the solids content of the waste, making it easier to handle and store. Lime treated bio-solids are safe and properly prepared bio-solids provide a rich source of the essential fertilizer elements needed by plants to produce food. 8
Temporary Dosing/Portable Systems Portasilo can offer our customers temporary, mobile treatment systems in various configurations to ensure that water supplies remain uninterrupted and unaffected by emergency or short term planned maintenance or up-grades to existing plant. Systems to dose hydrated lime and PAC can be tailor made to suit your individual treatment works. These systems can be rented out for defined periods whilst we perform up-grades on your existing plants. Please contact Portasilo for further information. In conjunction with our chemical dosing suppliers Portasilo can also provide chemical dosing equipment for the following products: Lime Hypochlorite Polymer Sulphuric Acid Mono Sodium Phosphate Sodium Hydroxide (Caustic) Aluminium Coagulant Hypochlorite Bisulphite 9
Global Water Desalination Systems Desalination and Hydrated Lime Limestone Filter Recharging Systems Milk of Lime (MOL) is often added to water following high quality water treatment by filtration or membrane processes. These can include potable water, seawater desalination, brackish water desalination, advanced water treatment for recycling and industrial and mining water supply. The addition of MOL increases the ph value, remineralises the water and reduces the corrosivity to pipes and structures On Desalination plants that utilise a Limestone Filtration process of remineralisation then Portasilo is able to provide the Limestone filter recharging systems. These typically store the limestone and then mix it with the desalinated water and hydraulically convey the limestone slurry to the limestone filters. Lime Saturators Portasilo is able to provide bespoke, turnkey hydrated lime storage, mixing and dosing systems for a wide range of applications. Lime saturators are a critical element in the desalination process. It is essentially a clarifier tank that is designed with a certain mixing energy and residence time that encourages the lime solids to dissolve. Milk of Lime (MOL) from the hydrated lime storage and mixing system is continously fed into the saturator reaction zone, where mixing with the recycled lime solids takes place. The Limewater produced by the saturators has a very low solids concentration and in the process the impurities have also been removed. 10
