Resource Overview This resource is divided into four components. The topics in each component, as well as the components themselves, are best covered sequentially; however, each component may be used alone. At the beginning of each component is a brief overview of the component, answer keys and suggestions for implementing the activities. The implementation suggestions are presented as ideas only. It is not intended that any or all need be implemented to use the activity pages. At the end of each component is a two-page quiz. Component What is Electricity? How Does Electricity Travel? This component examines the concepts related to... - the properties and uses of electricity - the atom - static electricity - positive and negative charges - The Law of Electrostatics - current electricity, its properties, and uses - conductors and insulators - different types of circuits - draw diagrams using electrical symbols The main investigative activities will require the student to... - explore static electricity using concrete materials - consider the uses of electricity in their life - use electrical equipment to build: 1. a simple circuit 2. a circuit tester 3. a series circuit 4. a parallel circuit What is Electromagnetism? - the relationship between electricity and magnetism - the uses of electromagnetism - early scientists associated with electromagnetism - use electrical equipment to build: 1. an electromagnet 2. a working telegraph How is Electricity Generated? - how batteries are made - the production of electricity in hydro, fossil fuel, and nuclear plants - non-renewable and renewable sources of electricity - measuring electricity - make a battery using a lemon - conduct a survey of their home, recording and measuring the amount of electricity used On the Mark Press S&S Learning Materials 4 OTM-2108 SSB1-108 Electricity

General Implementation Ideas Teacher suggestions can be found at the beginning of each component. These pages give a brief overview of each topic and ideas for planning ahead and implementing the unit. The implementation suggestions are presented as ideas only. It is not intended that any or all need to be implemented to use the activity pages. Planning Ahead Begin collecting the resources on the checklist below in advance. Ask students to help. resource books (look under electricity, energy, simple experiments, electronics, nuclear power) films, filmstrips, videos kits old calendars, magazines (for related pictures) encyclopedias of science computer software electrical supplies (see equipment list pg. 10) Implementation 1. Plan to spend approximately six to eight weeks to cover the unit. 2. Before beginning the unit think about and discuss safety issues with students. Consider making a chart of safety rules with the group as a whole or have the students work in small groups to make their own posters of safety rules when around electricity. It is important that the students understand that although working with low voltage batteries is relatively safe, they should not attempt any investigations with current electricity. 3. Set up a corner of the room or table etc. where students can find additional electrical equipment and resources. (see optional equipment list pg. 11) 4. A bulletin board where student work and pictures etc. can be displayed, will add interest to the unit. Copy and enlarge Electrifying Facts on which the students can write fascinating facts about electricity. Display safety posters. 5. Duplicate the student activity pages and make into small booklets, which will be easy to evaluate and display. If you prefer not to duplicate the pages, consider making overheads of the activity pages or writing the questions on the board. 6. Three-hole sheet protectors are handy for protecting the reading pages. When they have been used, they can be collected and stored in a binder for use another year. The sleeves can be used for the next set of cards and lamination costs are cut. 7. Think about how the students work will be organized. (folder, duotang, booklet, binder, etc.) Small booklets are easy to keep in folders and stored in a box or basket etc. 8. Copy and encourage the students to use the Student Tracking pages to provide a visual record of their progress. To prevent loss and allow for easy access, consider keeping all student sheets in one binder. This will allow you and the students quick and easy access. 9. Begin ahead of time to collect equipment. It is important to organize the equipment. Consider putting enough equipment for each group into shoe boxes or baskets with a list of the contents attached. Appointing one person from each group to be responsible for the box or basket will save a good deal of time and aggravation when it is time to do the investigations.
