Unit details Unit code: Unit name: Unit purpose: BSBWHS201A Contribute to health and safety of self and others This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to participate in work health and safety (WHS) processes to protect own health and safety, and that of others. For further information about this unit go to: http://training.gov.au Unit outcome: This unit is not graded. Your result will be recorded as: achieved competence (AC) or not competent (NC), or not competent (NC), achieved competence (AC), competent with credit (CC), competent with distinction (CD). You must meet the criteria for competence but are not obliged to attempt the grading criteria. Your TAFE transcript will indicate the unit is graded and show your result but will not indicate whether you chose to attempt the grading criteria or not. This is a written test, workplace inspection and WHS meeting agenda.! Every assessment event must be successfully completed in order to demonstrate competence in this unit.! If you do not successfully complete an assessment event you may be given the opportunity to undertake another assessment. This must be negotiated with your teacher. Should you be unsuccessful in the 2nd attempt, you may need to pay an additional fee.! You will receive feedback on each assessment and this feedback will be posted on the course website.! Task 1 - Written Test Compile your answers to your written test in a document. Include the question with your completed answer underneath. Question 1: WorkCover is the NSW state authority responsible for overseeing the Work Health and Safety legislation and codes of practice. Access the WorkCover website and read the employee (worker) and employer (PBCU) responsibilities. What is your understanding of the legal requirement for you to work in accordance with your organisational Work Health and Safety procedures? Question 2: When starting work with an organisation what information should you be provided in your workplace induction about WHS? Question 3: Name four (4) major causes of workplace accidents relevant to the IT environment and briefly explain how you could prevent these accidents happening. Question 4: To ensure a safe workplace a Hazard Management Strategy should be implemented This strategy includes hazard identification, assessment and the development of a control strategy. a) To contribute to a safe workplace look around the workplace and identify and list any hazards you can see. b) Assess one of these hazards (risk rating) and suggest a control strategy for the hazard you have identified. c) Does this hazard require advice from an expert in this area? d) How would you communicate this hazard to the designated person in your organisation? Question 5: Why is low humidity an issue in the IT workplace? How can humidity be controlled? Question 6 What is Ergonomics? Why is ergonomics important in the IT office environment? Question 7: You have been asked to give advice to a new employee on setting up their workstation. How far should a monitor be positioned from the user? Where should you position the keyboard in relation to the user and the monitor? Question 8: Why is it important to have regular rest breaks and exercise when entering data into a computer and what is the suggested time interval between rest breaks? Question 9: List two (2) commonly used signs or safety symbols you would see in an IT organisation. Question 10: Name some of the functions of the Health and Safety committee (HSC). Give an example of how you can contribute to the HSC. Task 2 Workplace Inspection The purpose of this task is to demonstrate your skills in identifying and reporting workplace hazards. The WHS Committee has requested a safety inspection of the workplace. Using the WHS inspection form provided in Task 2 BSBOHS301A_answers.docx conduct an inspection of your workplace according to WHS procedures. Your inspection should include: Identification of any potential health and safety risks Any behaviours that may have WHS implications Display of Emergency Incidents procedures Appropriate signs or symbols or notices displayed for the work area Fill out the form with recommended actions required to eliminate or alleviate any issues that you consider may pose an WHS risk. Task 3 - OHS Meeting Agenda The purpose of this task is to demonstrate your skills in effectively communicating OHS issues to the person responsible for OHS. Using the information gathered in Task 2 on the WHS Inspection Form, write a list of agenda items for discussion at the next WHS meeting using the Task 3 Agenda template.
