Surface Water Solutions for a better world

Our Surface Water Services Expertise Growing worldwide awareness of water scarcity has encouraged water preservation programs, better irrigation techniques and comprehensive river basin management programs. Louis Berger has been at the forefront of many of these initiatives, assisting farmers and water users associations in introducing cost-effective and efficient water supply systems and promoting sophisticated multi-use water management systems and innovative conservation technologies. Louis Berger s watershed, groundwater, aquifer and river basin management strategies protect water resources and associated ecosystems while improving irrigation, sanitation and potable water supplies as well as ensuring equitable distribution of water. Improving the health of surface water involves addressing water flows, vegetation conditions, habitats, invasive species, human encroachment, and sources of pollution. Louis Berger s wide range of surface water management services include: Stormwater management Pollution prevention Low-impact development and Best Management Practices (BMPs) Stream and wetland restoration, mitigation and banking Flood control and damage reduction Bridge and culvert design

STORMWATER MANAGEMENT SERVICES Stormwater runoff can harm surface water and in turn contribute to poor water quality by changing natural hydrologic patterns, accelerating natural stream flows, terminating aquatic habitat and elevating pollutant concentrations. Such impaired surface water quality can slowly cause habitat alteration and destruction. Louis Berger s expertise includes all phases of stormwater management and compliance, from consulting and permitting, construction, repair and rehabilitation to routine maintenance and inspection services. Louis Berger has provided program management, staff augmentation services and consent decree compliance programs globally. Specifically, Louis Berger s spectrum of services include: Conducting feasibility studies, facility design, permitting and construction management Designing structural and non-structural BMPs for stormwater management Analyzing hydraulic and hydrological conditions Supporting stormwater regulatory permit applications and negotiations Developing water quality and watershed management plans Preparing stormwater management reports for federal, state and county or municipal review Providing inspection services of stormwater management infrastructure Designing and retrofitting storm drain systems Providing reviews of stormwater management plans and erosion and sediment control plans T.F. Green Airport Rhode Island, United States

POLLUTION PREVENTION SERVICES Water conservation and prevention of water pollution are vital to ensure continuous abundance of safe water for future generations. Louis Berger understands that the best way to reduce hazardous waste and pollutants is to aid in their prevention. The wide spectrum of pollution prevention services provided by Louis Berger includes the following: Program management Tracking and reporting Public outreach Modeling Wetlands assessments Watershed planning Engineering and construction management Technical negotiations with regulatory staff on permit and compliance implications Old Reservoir Massachusetts, United States

STREAM AND WETLAND RESTORATION, MITIGATION AND BANKING SERVICES Streams and wetlands feed the drinking water sources for millions of people worldwide, protect communities from flooding, provide habitat for fish and wildlife, and support local economies. With increasing risk of pollution and destruction, stream and wetland restoration activities are vital to restore the natural state and functioning of the river systems in support of biodiversity and landscape development. Louis Berger s staff is equipped to manage every aspect of stream and wetland restoration such as: Conducting baseline studies Preparing permit applications Developing draft and final design plans and specifications and cost estimates Providing planting construction oversight Conducting feasibility studies for restoration projects Hydro-geomorphological analysis and design Rosgen stream assessment methods Cost-benefit analysis Hydrologic and hydraulic modeling Evaluating innovative stormwater BMPs Evaluating opportunities to incorporate existing site features (such as bedrock or stable channel reach) into design. Lake Simcoe Ontario, Canada

LOW-IMPACT DEVELOPMENT AND BMPS By implementing low-impact development principles and practices, water can be managed in a way that reduces the impact of built areas and promotes the natural movement of water within an ecosystem or watershed. Applied on a broad scale, low-impact development techniques can maintain or restore a watershed s hydrologic and ecological functions. Louis Berger s experts propose environmentally preferable stormwater management techniques through a variety of green infrastructure best practices, such as complete tree canopies and natural stormwater infiltration. Louis Berger s services also include preparing before and after renderings and showing the outcome of implementing the recommended improvements. FLOOD CONTROL AND DAMAGE REDUCTION SERVICES Climate change concerns about potential risks of rising sea levels and increases in rainfall intensity highlight the importance of managing water-related disasters. Flood control and damage reduction projects can prove to be key instruments in the fight against global climate change. Louis Berger has demonstrated its ability to optimize cost-effective solutions to challenging water problems and issues within site-specific constraints. Louis Berger s global planning, environmental and engineering services for flood control projects include: Formulating proposed storm damage reduction plans Performing final engineering analysis for the improved conditions included with-project storm-induced recession Estimation of wave run-ups Overtopping analysis for 5, 10, 25, 50, 100, and 200-year storm conditions.
