Global Demand for Woodfiber for Biomass and Pulp Bob Flynn Director, International Timber, RISI JOPP Seminar, Tokyo, Japan June 13, 214

Agenda for Today This first presentation will focus on DEMAND for pulpwood around the world, both for pulp and for biomass. The second presentation will narrow the focus to SOUTHEAST Asia, and the potential for biomass fiber production and exports from that region.

Despite declines in per capita consumption of certain paper grades, total demand for wood pulp will continue to expand Table 1 Forecast of Wood Pulp Production by Region Million Tonnes Region 27-11 (Avg) 212 217 222 1-year change % change North America 69.2 67.4 65.1 64.7-2.7-4.% Western Europe 36.6 34.8 31.5 29.4-5.4-15.5% Asia 26.3 3 37.3 45.1 15.1 5.3% Latin America 2 22 3.4 35.6 13.6 61.8% Eastern Europe/CIS 1.3 1.3 12.8 17.1 6.8 66.% Oceania 2.8 2.8 2.8 3.9 1.1 39.3% Africa 1.9 1.8 1.8 2.2 11.1% Total 167.1 169.1 181.7 197.8 28.7 17.% Source: RISI s World Pulp and Recovered Paper Forecast

Pulpwood is also used to produce wood panels like MDF and OSB, as well as pulp Global Wood Fiber Demand for Production of Pulp and Wood Panels Million Cubic Meters per Year 1,1 1, 9 By Species Hardwood Softwood 1,1 1, 9 By Product Oriented Strand Board Reconstituted Panels (1) Pulp 8 8 7 7 6 6 5 5 4 4 3 3 2 2 1 1 1997-21 22-26 27-211 212-216 217-221 1997-21 22-26 27-211 212-216 217-221 Includes all wood fiber sources (growing stock and non-growing stock). Although forecasts can differ widely, almost all agree that global consumption of wood pellets will expand in the future Million Tonnes 7 Global Consumption of Wood Pellets 6 5 4 3 2 Other China Japan/Korea N. America W. Europe 1 21 215 22 Source: Poyry

European Market Potential for Industrial Wood Pellets --- less than original forecasts Whole EU is a potential market for co-firing wood pellets Continued narrowing of focus: UK primary market, also Denmark, Belgium, etc. New CfD restrictions by UK Treasury: Eggobrough is a no go UK = Drax + (maybe) a few smaller projects Carbon price crash: focus shifts to fewer countries with additional support Support for co-firing limited in UK focus on few large conversions: Drax, Eggborough, etc.
