Keys to Energy Efficiency Natasha Pearce Manager, Energy Solution Advisors

Our Story What is energy efficiency? Why it s important? How efficiency benefits you Energy Pyramid Stages of efficient design Home as a system New Housing Trends Efficiency overall Walls, ceilings, foundations Programs/ Services Residential Business Agenda

Our Story 2010 Efficiency Nova Scotia Corporation established to manage electricity Demand Side Management (DSM) initiatives in Nova Scotia. Initiatives are funded by a DSM charge on electricity bills. 2014 Legislative changes establish Efficiency Nova Scotia as a franchise and require DSM initiatives to be provided by a franchise holder, now known as EfficiencyOne. The cost of these activities will be included in electricity rates. 2015 The UARB approves a 3-year, $102 million investment in DSM activities. Funding from the Province of Nova Scotia continues to support no-cost upgrades in income-qualified homes across the province.

What is Energy Efficiency? Energy efficiency is "using less energy to provide the same service". Energy conservation is reducing or going without a service to save energy. Both efficiency and conservation can reduce greenhouse gas emissions Example: Turning off a light is energy conservation. Replacing an incandescent lamp with a compact fluorescent lamp (which uses much less energy to produce the same amount of light) is energy efficiency.

How efficiency benefits you We work with 100+ local partners to deliver energy-saving services: We ve helped over 225,000 Nova Scotians to date Reduced annual electricity use by 8% Prevented over 590,000 tonnes of GHG emissions Lowered power bills by $110 million in 2016 alone Helped 1,300 income-qualified homeowners save money and live more comfortably

The Energy Pyramid

Stages of Efficient Design/Renovations Renewables Lighting & Appliances Heating & Hot water Building Envelope

Building as a system Designing or renovating requires careful planning and attention to detail. A building as a system approach helps owners, designers, and builders develop successful strategies for optimizing energy efficiency. More work up front means less work down the road

Insulation

Air Tightness Measured in Air Changes Per Hour (ACH) Older buildings average 8 ACH/hr Passive buildings average 0.6 ACH/hr

Heating and Cooling Central: Hydronic Boiler Furnaces Electric Thermal Storage (ETS) Air Source Heat Pumps Geothermal Heat Pump Auxiliary: Electric Baseboard ETS Room Units Mini Split Ductless Air Source Heat Pumps Wood / Pellet Stove Central vs. Auxiliary Always try to move in direction of a central system Doing so may mean higher initial cost but it is easier to adapt in future situations Hidden heat Allow for extra room between floors

Mini Split Ductless Heat pumps Air Source Heat Pump Auxiliary Systems Compact System Single or Multi-head systems available Range in size: 9000Btu/hr 24,000Btu/hr Zone heating solution

Central Heat pumps Air to Air, Air to water, Geothermal Central Systems Furnace or Boiler configuration Range in size: 24,000Btu/hr + Whole building solution

What to look for Heating Seasonal Performance Factor (HSPF)= Heating Efficiency Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER)= Cooling Efficiency Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER)= Heating and Cooling Efficiency Combined. Co-efficient of Performance (COP)= Overall Operating Efficiency Region 5: HSPF = 7.4+ SEER = 15.0+ EER = 12.5+ COP@-15 C => 1.75 COP@-15 C 2.30

Draft Energy Scenarios Bridgewater Energy Partnership Workshop 4 May 2 2017

Discussion In groups of 2 or 3: Discuss the draft energy scenarios. Do any stand out as being particularly important or valuable for the community? Are any unlikely to work here? Is there anything missing? Bridgewater Energy Partnership Workshop 4 May 2 2017
