SPAIN A. MARKET FOR FRESH FRUITS AND VEGETABLES 1. Market Trends and Opportunities a. Market Opportunities Spain if the largest producer of fresh fruits and vegetables and second largest consumers of these produces in EU. Spain supplies such produces to EU as well as other markets. Although its import accounted only 3 per cent of total value of EU import, the share of import from developing countries is increasing. A large amount of tomatoes and grapes are processed into puree and wine. Consumption of all varieties of fruits and vegetables are growing except for melons and watermelons. Following table shows total consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables in Spain in 2006. Table I Consumption of Fruits and Vegetables in Spain in 2006 Total Consumption Value Euro Million Volume Million Tonne Per Capita in Kg Share in Total Food Consumption % of Value Consumption Growth Rates 2002-2006 % of% in% in Volume Volume Value Fruits 5600 4.5 103 6.9 11.7 34 13 Vegetables 4400 2.9 68 5.4 7.7 31 12 In Spain consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables is expected to grow more in terms of value than in term of volume. According to the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPA 2007) the main fruits consumed are citrus fruits (17% of total fruit consumption), apple and pears (9%), bananas (8%), melons (5%), and stone fruits (3.7%). The main vegetables consumed are lettuce and chicory (30%), onion and peppers (21%), and tomatoes (19%). Bananas: Bananas accounted for 11 per cent of value and 9 per cent of volume of total fruit sales in Spain. In 2006, volume of home consumption of Banana increased by 7 per cent over the year 2005. And total value of consumption amounted to Euro 590 million. Grapes: total home consumption of grapes amounted to 102000 tonnes value at Euro 196 million in 2006. Tomatoes: Tomatoes accounted for 22 per cent of total home consumption of vegetables in value and 25 per cent in volume in 2006. It means 723,000 tonnes of tomatoes value at Euro 971 million were consumed by Spanish. In 2006 tomatoes consumption increased by 7 per cent and onion by 14 per cent over the year 2005. 126

Peppers: Peppers accounted for 9 per cent of value and 8 per cent of volume of total vegetable consumption in Spain in 2006. Stone fruits include peaches, nectarines, apricots, cherries and plums 2. Other vegetables include garlic, cabbages, cucumbers, mushrooms, asparagus, eggplants, carrots, etc. b. Domestic Production and Opportunities Diversity in agro-climatic conditions have resulted a huge variety of crops being produced in Spain. Spain share 27 per cent (18.2 million tonnes) in fruits and 18 per cent in vegetable (10.8 million tonnes) in total EU production. Major fruit produced in 2006 are grapes (35%), citrus (32.6%), melons (9.7%), apples (7.2%), and stone fruits (7.4%). Similarly major vegetables produced are tomatoes (34.3%), other vegetables (23%), lettuce/chicory (10%) and beans and peas (3%). The most important conditions and variables effecting the production of fruits and vegetables in Spain are (a) weather, (b) water availability, (c ) fierce competition from external supplies and (d) EU supports and subsidies. Opportunities: a. As an important part of diet consumption if growing and EU is also encouraging fruits and vegetables consumption. b. Demand for tropical fruits is not but it is growing fast. 2. Trade Analysis 2.1 Fresh Fruits Total value and volume of imports of fresh fruits and vegetables in Spain are relatively small. In Appendix B Tables of data are presented in detail. These analysis and tables are based on trade-maps of the International Trade. 3. Trade and Consumer s Preference 3.1 Consumption Pattern: Spanish prefer domestically produced traditional fruits and vegetables. However, changing lifestyle with an ageing population and decreasing household size has impact on consumption. Apart from this trend of health, convenience, pleasure, food-safety are all influencing the consumption pattern. 3.2 Health Concern and pattern: Consumers in general are demanding fruits and vegetables having positive health affects. They are more eager to gain knowledge on quality, safety and important properties of produce. Households with small families are focusing on high quality health and convenience foods with added value and delicacies. Families with more children prefer inexpensive basic fruits and vegetables. 3.3 Consumers are spending less time on grocery shopping: Supermarkets are gaining popularity and strong position as valued by consumers on shopping close to home, availability of varieties and quality products. 4. Legislative Requirements Requirements are defined through legislation and through labels, codes and management systems. These are based on environmental, consumer health and safety and social concerns. 129

4.1 Tariffs : Refer http://www.cbi.nl/marketinfo and http://www.exporthelp.europa.eu For fresh fruits and vegetables, the reduced VAT rate of 4 per cent is applicable. 4.2 Non-tariffs: Refer Report on FFV in the EU Markets 5. Non-legislative Requirements 5.1 Grading, Packaging, Marking and Labelling Requirements relating to packaging, marking and labeling are subject to the EU marketing standards of fresh fruits and vegetables. Standards are applicable only for selected fruits and vegetables refer http://www.cib.eu/marketinfo/cbi?action=showdetails&id=1869 Additional information on packaging are found at ITC webpage http://www.intracen.org/ep/packaging/packit.htm 5.2 Trading Practices 5.3 Trade Structure and Channels Concentration and specialization is resulting in fewer companies with large market share in fresh fruits and vegetables in Spain. It is a heterogeneous market having several regional and local market structures. Majority of importers, agents, and distributors are located in Madrid and Barcelona. An exporter from a developing country can enter into Spanish market through an agent or importer or directly contact with wholesaler. There are 22 large wholesalers. Supermarkets and hypermarkets procure their requirements from wholesalers or maintain their own purchasing department. Retailing is dominated by traditional outlets (40 to 45%), followed by supermarkets (30%), hypermarket (10%), and street markets (6%). Some of the large importers and traders are: Carrefour Mercadona Grupo Eroski El Corte Inglis Auchan http://www.carrefour.es http://www.mercadona.es http://www.grupoeroski.es http://www.elcorteingles.es http://www.auchan.com Other Market Information Selecting a suitable trading partner. Professional and formal business handling is often required. Prompt and proactive attitudes towards communication and follow ups are appreciated. Outside the larger cities foreign language is hardly spoken. 130
