Water softening In nature, water usually contains calcium and magnesium salts, which result in the property of hardness and in the formation of limescale due to precipitation of the mineral contents. The process adopted to reduce water hardness is called "softening". Water is softened by causing it to flow through a layer of ion exchanger resins that transform calcium and magnesium ions into sodium ions, which are soluble and hence do not form scale. When the resins are saturated with calcium and magnesium they are reactivated by means of a sodium chloride solution (regeneration). Idrobios automatic water softeners are produced in two main versions: With Single Valve With Valves Bank The models are divided into: Single Valve Series AD...SFE (electronic timer managed by time and/or by volume) Valves Bank Series AD...GT (time controlled electronic timer) Series AD...GV (volume controlled electronic timer) Operation of the appliance is managed automatically by an electronic controller that provides information on supplied water volumes and allows regeneration to be programmed in one of the following ways: By, on reaching the supplied water volume limit value. By, i.e. at the selected date and time. Hybrid and, i.e. regeneration is performed on reaching the specified volume or on the specified date, whichever parameter is satisfied first, but anyway exclusively at the programmed time. Single valve water softeners do not supply water during the final regeneration stage. A hydro-pneumatic diaphragm valve can be supplied on request to provide an untreated water outlet during the final regeneration stage. The same consideration holds true for water softeners with valves bank; the water supply is suspended during the regeneration cycle but the softener can be fitted (optionally) with a by-pass valve to assure a supply of unsoftened water during the regeneration stage. 2

High Flow Rate _ WATER SOFTENERS The Duplex series is designed to provide an uninterrupted softened water supply 24 hours/day. Two columns are used in parallel managed by a single timer, with changeover type operation, i.e. when one water softener is operating the other one performs the regeneration cycle or is in stand-by mode. The controller responds to signals transmitted by a pulse trigger litre counter installed on the system outlet. The models are divided into: Single Valve Series AD...SVD (electronic controller with directional control valves for volume-only regeneration command) Valves Bank Series AD...GVD (electronic controller with directional control valves for volume-only regeneration command) These units are designed for the industrial sector (feed water for laundries, steam generators and cooling towers), civil and healthcare sectors and all applications requiring a continuous supply of softened water. All our water softeners are constructed in compliance with Italian decree no. 25 of 7 February 2012. 3

Construction All specified models are primarily composed of: Vertical cylindrical tank, made of suitably treated S275JR steel, electrowelded with dished heads, complete with feet, lifting eyes, air vent valve, pressure relief valve and resin filling and emptying ports. The tank is fitted with two water distribution systems: one lower system composed of a rugged calibrated orifice arm collector, and one upper system, composed of a calibrated geometry flow break disk. Single monobloc valve (V360) connected by means of PVC piping and unions, or Bank of Diaphragm Valves connected by means of galvanised steel piping. 100 mm diameter pressure gauges to show pressure drops. Ejector for brine suction. Brine tank complete with grid, brine well and float valve. tric pulse trigger counter supplied as standard exclusively for volume regeneration and duplex water softeners. r or Control unit and Controller for system management. Filter media Strong cation resin (supplied in 25 l bags). Distribution bed composed of quartz sand supporting resin bed (supplied in 25 kg bags). 4

Handbook The following parameters are required for correct water softener sizing: Daily water consumption per person (approx. 0.20 [m 3 /day]). Water hardness in [ f] (1 f=10mg of CaCO 3 ), measurable with a tester. The following must be taken into account: The average salt quantity required to regenerate one litre of resin is approximately 150 g/l. The maximum quantity of salt that dissolves in one litre of water is 250 g/l. To find the litres of resin required for one day of water softening use the following data: H 2 O for 24 hours [l] x hardness [ f] 1 l of resin = 6,000 [l/ f] Having specified the exchange capacity of 1 l of strong cation resin as - 6000 [l/ f]. Calculation example of litres of softened water produced by a water softener. To obtain current values use the litres of resin effectively contained in the water softener. Litres of treated H 2 O = Water softener resin contents [l] x 6,000 [l/ f] Hardness [ f] Calculation of salt consumption for each regeneration cycle of a given water softener. salt (g) = Water softener resin contents [l] x 150 [grams per litre of resin] Finally, check the required water contents in the brine tank of a given water softener. Litres of H 2 O in Brine Tank = Water softener resin contents [l] x 150 [grams per litre of resin] 250 [grams of salt per litre of water] 15
