Water softening In nature, water usually contains calcium and magnesium salts, which result in the property of hardness and in the formation of limescale due to precipitation of the mineral contents. The process adopted to reduce water hardness is called "softening". Water is softened by causing it to flow through a layer of ion exchanger resins that transform calcium and magnesium ions into sodium ions, which are soluble and hence do not form scale. When the resins are saturated with calcium and magnesium they are reactivated by means of a sodium chloride solution (regeneration). Regeneration of the resins is completely automatic. During the regeneration process the water softener automatically functions in by-pass mode to ensure water is supplied to the point of use. WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS? The presence of large amounts of calcium and magnesium will result in the formation of deposits over the medium/ long-term, with the consequent fouling of pipes and decline in boiler efficiency. This leads to a rise in heating costs of around 20% / year. Hard water will also damage home appliances, particularly washing machines and dishwashers. These are just examples to demonstrate the importance of a water softening system, which will increase the working life of appliances, guarantee more efficient operation of home and professional heating systems, improve the operation and extend the working life of solar thermal systems, and in general of all applications involving the use of water. Using softened water in an average 4-person household produces: 55% Saving of detergent and soap 33% Saving on wear and tear of laundry 60% Saving of domestic hot water energy costs (2mm thick scale) 92% Saving on maintenance costs of: boilers, water heaters, dishwashers, pumps 2

Duplex _ WATER SOFTENERS Duplex water softeners In duplex systems (double column), resin regeneration is programmed to occur on the basis of the volume of water supplied. The columns are regenerated in alternation, so one column is always functioning while the other is either undergoing regeneration or in stand-by mode. The system is managed automatically by an electronic controller that establishes: Regeneration start of depleted column. Functions changeover between the two columns. Hydro-pneumatically controlled diaphragm valves are used to shut off the water outlet flow during regeneration or stand-by stages. The controller responds to signals transmitted by a pulse trigger litre counter installed on the system outlet. Thanks to the two fibreglass cylinders interconnected by means of a controller that alternates the regeneration process, the above water softeners can supply softened water 24h/day without interruption. All our water softeners are constructed in compliance with Italian decree no. 25 of 7 February 2012. 3

Duplex _ WATER SOFTENERS Never install the drain line directly in a sewer or culvert. Always leave a space as shown in the figure. Space Drain Maintenance For perfect operation of the equipment carry out a series of simple and indispensable maintenance tasks: Addition of consumables (salt) visible through the opening in the cover on top of the tank. Cleaning brine tank to remove salt residues. Cleaning or replacement of water softener upstream prefilter cartridge. Conformity Constructed in compliance with: Italian ministerial decree 25 of 7 February 2012 Italian ministerial decree 174 of 6 April 2004 In compliance with European Directives (Low Voltage, Electromagnetic Compatibility, RoHS and WEEE), Laws and Regulations. 9

Handbook The following parameters are required for correct water softener sizing: Daily water consumption per person (approx. 0.20 [m 3 /day]). Water hardness in [ f] (1 f=10mg of CaCO 3 ), measured with a tester. The following must be taken into account: The average salt quantity required to regenerate one litre of resin is approximately 150 g/l. The maximum quantity of salt that dissolves in one litre of water is 250 g/l. To find the litres of resin required for one day of water softening use the following data: 1 l of resin = H 2 O for 24 hours [l] x hardness [ f] 6,000 [l/ f] Having specified the exchange capacity of 1 l of strong cation resin as - 6000 [l/ f]. Calculation example of litres of softened water produced by a water softener. To obtain current values use the litres of resin effectively contained in the water softener. Water softener resin contents [l] x 6,000 [l/ f] Litres of treated H 2 O = Hardness [ f] Calculation of salt consumption for each regeneration cycle of a given water softener. salt (g) = Water softener resin contents [l] x 150 [grams per litre of resin] Finally, check the required water contents in the brine tank of a given water softener. Litres of H 2 O in Brine Tank = Water softener resin contents [l] x 150 [grams per litre of resin] 250 [grams of salt per litre of water] 10
