Application of Biogas System to Solve Sanitation Problems in the Mekong Delta

General Overview Location: Tan Phu Dong ward, Sa Dec town, Dong Thap province, Vietnam Strategy: Promote of commercialization of the Biogas tank Project management: Environmental Engineering & Renewable Energy Center, College of Technology, Cantho University

Map of project area INVENT Integrated Waste Management modules for different courses of graduate studies

General Overview Objective: Solving environment problems from rice processing and pig breeding Funding: 10,000 USD by BfdW (Bread for the World) Time: Feb. 1999 Aug. 2003

Background Tan Phu Dong is a trade village with over 100 years in making products from rice such as rice flour, rice vermicelli, etc. 850/1200 households produce rice products ( 100 140 kg/day) in combination with pig breeding ( 40 60 pigs in the pigsty each time) All wastes are discharged to the canals

waste waste water supply

Activities Main activities Introduce local farmers the environment benefit of the Biogas system through the Women Union and Agricultural Board Encourage farmers to join this project and register for the Biogas tank installation Survey the registered farmers for Biogas tank installation

Activities Main activities (cont.) Loan for Biogas construction and loan for Biogas supervisor & warranty fee Loan returned after 6 months and contribution of returned loan to other farmers Call for loans to farmers from other sources such as Agri-Bank and the local committee

Activities Main activities (cont.) Construct Biogas system Train local workers how to build Biogas tanks Prepare the materials concerning training courses Instruct local farmers knowledge/experience related to Biogas system management

TG-BP applied in this project

Results Main issues: Improvement of the local environment quality Treatment for solid waste and wastewater in sustainable way (safety and economy) Increasing people s awareness of environment protection Saving household expenditure by using gas for cooking

Results Effective usage of the fund to: Loan for biogas supervision & warranty fee for 40 households with 34 tanks (316m3) 24,050,000 VND Loan for 21 households to build Biogas tanks (198m3) 124,500,000 VND Financial support to 2 households to install 2 compost pits 400,000 VND

Results Training and technology transfer Technology transfer of the Biogas system construction to 6 local worker groups Technology transfer of Biogas construction supervision and warranty to 1 local staff Training 50 households how to assess Biogas construction work, operate Biogas system (especially in flooding season), apply Biogas output for farming and pig raising techniques

Results Propaganda and education: Support for Cantho Television Center to implement 2 programs: Producing and using the compost Efficient treatment methods for pig breeding 250 biogas tanks constructed in the local area without loan from the project 200 million VND funded by Australian Government to install more Biogas system
