These may be reviewed and amended in consultation with the post holder in the light of any changes in the requirement and priorities within the College. Background Information: IT Services is responsible for managing and developing the College s information technology infrastructure (from network and Internet connectivity, to desktop installation and support),as well as the running of the colleges Reprographics service. The IT Services department consists of a team of 6 led by the Information Systems Manager who all play an active role in supporting, maintaining and developing the College IT facilities. They also provide support and training to staff and assist and support students using the systems, as well as providing cover for the Reprographics department when needed. Key Purpose of the Post: To provide first line IT support to all users of the College IT facilities, ensuring systems are maintained and supported to the highest standards. To install, setup and configure new IT equipment for users such as workstations, printers and scanners. To assist the IT services team in projects at an appropriate level for the post: This will include: Playing an active role with other members of the Helpdesk team in maintaining the College s Open Access computer room, as well as providing direct support to students and staff with IT issues Data gathering, configuring and testing software and/or hardware, installation/replacement of equipment

Main Duties & Responsibilities: 1. To be first point of contact for all callers/visitors to the IT Helpdesk and to ensure all support calls and requests are dealt with in a timely fashion and in line with agreed SLA s. 2. To perform operational tasks, such as analysis and diagnosis of hardware and software problems; installation; replacement and testing of new/repaired hardware. 3. To update and maintain detailed documentation relating to IT procedures and configuration. 4. Maintain and update the IT asset register (desktop, hardware, software & peripherals) when equipment is installed, moved/transferred or disposed of. 5. Keep users informed regarding status of outstanding problems via the Helpdesk system, escalating any unsolved problems to a senior member of the team. 6. To help maintain the Open Access facilities so that they are functional and presentable. 7. Provide cover for other members of staff within the IT department and the Reprographics department. 8. Provide limited occasional 1:1 training with users. 9. Work with the IT services team to support the implementation of technical projects or development in IT including data gathering; configuring and testing software and/or hardware; installation/replacement of equipment. 10. There is a requirement to carry out work in cramped and awkward conditions on occasions. There will also be times when you will be required to carry heavy IT equipment (5KG 20KG). Person Specification Job Title: Education, Qualifications and Training IT Technician Essential Good general level of education with a minimum of GCSE Maths and English A C. Educated to NVQ level 3 in IT related subject or equivalent gained through specific relevant experience. Desirable Microsoft MCDST or equivalent qualification Experience and Knowledge Skills and Abilities Good working knowledge of: - Fundamentals of Windows operating systems - Microsoft Office and Internet applications (such as Google products) - PC and peripherals hardware knowledge Experience of dealing with enquiries and having an understanding of excellent customer service Relevant experience of working in an office environment and dealing with office administration Experience of PC hardware, operating systems and applications software Excellent verbal communication skills with people of all technical abilities Ability to problem solve calmly and effectively whilst under pressure Effective organisation and administration skills with the ability to prioritise workload. Good attention to detail with accurate data entry skills and the ability to follow documented procedures Ability to work independently and in a team environment with the capacity to show initiative and be proactive Confident and professional telephone Experience of working in a Further and/or Higher Education sector Experience of working with college specific Information Systems Experience of working in a user support environment Experience of working in a Reprographics department

IT Technician General Terms and Conditions of Employment 1. Contract The successful candidate will be offered a permanent support staff contract of employment. 2. Working hours/working weeks This post is full-time, 37 hrs per week, Mon- Fri. You will be required to work 1 evening per week, until 7.30pm. You will receive half hour unpaid lunch break each day. It is a part year contract, working during College term-time (39 wks) plus up to 4 weeks of additional hours during the College holiday period (to be paid on a claims basis). 4. Uniform You will be provided with a polo shirt/shirt/hoodie which you will be expected to wear during normal college hours 3. Salary This post is paid at Band 3, point 22 of the SFCA Support Staff pay spine, currently 18,494 per annum, pro rata. Salaries are paid monthly by BACS payment on the last working day of the month. 4. Annual leave Term time members of staff will be paid their leave entitlement as salary in addition to their working weeks. The IT Technician will work for 39 weeks and will be paid for 44.2 weeks. This is based on an annual leave entitlement of 24 days holiday, plus 2 extra statutory days and 8 bank holidays (pro rata for part-time staff). 5. Pension Entitlement All employees automatically become members of the Local Government Pension Scheme unless they decide to opt out. Members of the scheme are required to contribute a percentage of their pensionable pay, according to their salary. Varndean College will make a further contribution of 17.5% of the pensionable pay. 6. Probation Confirmation of your appointment will be subject to satisfactory completion of a period of induction of 6 months. During this period you will be expected to establish your suitability for the appointment. 7. Notice Period You are entitled to 1 week s notice for employment under 2 years and thereafter 1 week s notice for each year of continuous employment up to 12 years. You are required to give 1 month s notice. 8. Pre-employment Checks This appointment is subject to satisfactory references, an enhanced CRB, health clearance, evidence of right to work in the UK and presentation of original qualification certificates (where required).

9.
