With glass pre-filter, this membrane is excellent for filtration of tissue culture media, general biological sample filtration and clarification. Not resistant to most solvents. Polypropylene (PP) Hydrophilic polypropylene membranes are good for filtration of nearly all HPLC and GC samples. The membrane is highly solvent resistant, and can withstand most aggressive chemicals. Highly suited for filtration of aqueous samples. Low protein binding gives very high recoveries (92 %) compared with nylon membranes (69 %). HPLC with UV detection shows these membranes have been optimized to ensure minimal extractables and false peaks. Nylon For general sample and solvent filtration. Nylon has inherent hydrophilic characteristics and works well with all aqueous- as well as most solvent-based samples. Nylon is excellent for most HPLC and GC sample and solvent preparations. Polyethersulfone (PES) and Both membranes exhibit very low protein binding. Both can be used for general biological sample filtration and sterilization. Polyvinylidene Difluoride Polyvinylidene Difluoride (PVDF) is especially useful in HPLC sample preparation and is highly resistant to most solvents. Polyethersulfone has very limited resistance to solvents (PVDF) and is generally used for aqueous-based biological samples. Both membranes exhibit good flow rate characteristics. Polytetrafluoroethylene An inherently hydrophobic membrane that is good for filtration of organic-based, highly acidic or basic samples and solvents. Widely used for (PTFE, Teflon ) chromatography, and for clarification of non-aqueous samples. Although this membrane is hydrophobic, it can be made hydrophilic by wetting the membrane with alcohol and then flushing with deionized water. They can also lead to erratic analytical results. Prefiltering samples prior to analysis is critical in preventing column and frit blockage, undue wear on valve seals, and abnormally high operating pressures. Moreover, sample and solvent filtration will lead to an overall improvement in baseline, quantitation, reproducibility, and detection limits. Phenex syringe filters are designed for the economical, rapid filtration of almost any solution prior to analysis. The housing attaches to any standard Luer hub syringe, so the sample can be pushed through the membrane under pressure. The resulting eluent is free from particulates and ready for use with HPLC, GC or other analytical techniques. Phenex syringe filters are available in a broad range of pore sizes and membrane types. All are non-sterile. Filters made with 17 or 30 mm membranes are suitable for use with samples of 1 ml or greater. Filters with 4 mm filter elements allow excellent recovery of samples less than 1 ml. Four and 17 mm filters are supplied with Nylon 66, polypropylene or PTFE membranes. 30 mm filters are available with polyethersulfone, cellulose acetate, PTFE, PVDF, polypropylene or Nylon 66 membranes. (Note: Both polypropylene and Nylon 66 are hydrophilic, will readily filter aqueous, organic, or aqueous/organic mixtures without prewetting, and contain no plasticizers.) PTFE is not recommended for the filtration of aqueous samples. Housings are available in polypropylene (PP) for acids and nonpolar solvents, and modified acrylic (MA) for aqueous samples. Since Nylon 66 is hydrophilic, filtering of aqueous solvents is simple. No prewetting is required. PTFE is hydrophobic and so is not recommended for the filtration of aqueous solutions. All you need is a laboratory centrifuge with sufficient capacity for the number of samples to be filtered at one time. Centrifugal force drives the sample through the filter quickly without effort on the part of the chemist. No cleaning of syringes is required between samples. Samples contact only the Spinex filter unit itself and the polypropylene receiver tube. After filtration the upper portion of the tube containing the membrane filter can be discarded. The receiver tube serves as a container for the filtered sample and can be retained as long as desired. Separate caps are supplied for the sample chamber and the receiver tube.
