Scale Control 1. Maintain the desired the level of Cooling Water dissolved solids by controlling the blowdown. 2. Blowdown should be controlled automatically with a conductivity controller 3. Addition of scale inhibitors allow for higher conductivities and cleaner surfaces 4. The Addition of Acid can be used in extreme cases to control scale.

Corrosion Control 1. Raise the ph of the water by allowing the cooling water alkalinity to cycle-up. 2. Corrosion inhibitors can be added.

Microbiological Control 1. Use of a Dual Biocide Program Oxidizing Biocides Non-Oxidizing Biocides 2. Proper Feed Control of the Biocides 3. Annual Cooling Tower Cleanings

The legislation addresses registration and inspection of cooling towers. It requires owners to create and file a plan to maintain equipment to comply with Sections 5, 6 and 7.2 of the new ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 188-2015, Legionellosis: Risk Management for Building Water Systems.

Section 5 Building Surveys Determine if your building is a high risk for legionellosis: 1. Multiple Housing with Centralized Hot Water systems; 2. Buildings with 10 or more Floors 3. Healthcare facility w/patient stays over 24 hours; 4. Medical facility treating occupants with burns, compromised immune systems, transplants, chemotherapy, diabetes, or chronic lung disease; 5. Housing for occupants over the age of 65.

SUMMARY Legionella is a common bacteria in found in water systems; Contracting Legionella is Not Simple, involves many factors: Favorable conditions for Legionella growth Method of transmitting water containing Legionella Inhalation by Susceptible persons All Cooling Water & Potable Water Systems are important; ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 188-2015 and the CDC Toolkit Owners, Managers, Design Engineers and Water Treaters must work together to Must Establish a Water Management Program to minimize the risk of Legionellosis
