Acrylic Copolymer Emulsion TECHNICAL DATA SHEET General Description Carboset PL-958 is an acrylic copolymer emulsion designed for clear or pigmented temporary peelable coating applications. Carboset PL-958 resin offers very good solvent resistance as well as high tensile strength. Carboset PL-958 resin may not require coalescing aids at ambient temperatures which allows the formulator to produce temporary coatings with extremely low VOC's. Carboset PL-958 resin may be applied to a wide variety of metal, plastic, and painted substrates for a temporary protective coating which peels easily and leaves no residue after removal. Carboset PL-958 resin is composed of ingredients which meet the current requirements of FDA for food contact use when used in accordance with the regulation. (See Page 2 for details.) Page 7 Suggestions DEFOAMERS In order to reduce foam during manufacture and application, it is usually necessary to use a defoamer. The following commercial defoamers have been found to be effective with Carboset PL-958 resin: Tego 825 Tego 1488 Foam Burst 338 Bubblebreaker 748 DeeFo XGM-14-I* Tego Chemie Tego Chemie Ross Chemical, Inc. Witco, Inc. Ultra Additives, Inc. *We have found this defoamer, XGM-14-I, to be very effective with Carboset PL-958 resin for defoaming during manufacturing and during airless spray applications -- even at high film builds. Suggested usage levels range from 0.25 to 2.0 pounds per 100 gallons formula. DISPERSANTS/SURFACTANTS Several dispersants and surfactants have been found to be effective in dispersing various pigments in Carboset PL-958 resin, and in helping to wet out various substrates with the formulated coating: BYK 158 Triton CF-10 FLASH RUST INHIBITION Byk-Chemie Union Carbide Application to some metal substrates may induce flash rusting under certain temperature/humidity conditions. The following is a suitable inhibitor: Raybo 60 OTHER RAW MATERIALS Raybo, Inc. THICKENERS The addition of thickeners often helps structure peelable coatings made with Carboset PL-958 resin to reduce or eliminate sag and permit application to vertical surfaces. Several thickeners have been found to be effective: Ti-Pure R902 Tetrasodium Pyrophosphate Colonyl Black 181004 Strodex PK-90 Triethyl Citrate C-2 DuPont Pigments Morton Thiokol Hoechst Dexter Moreflex Inc. Carbopol EP-1 resin HECQP-4400 Lubrizol Union Carbide FREEZE/THAW RESISTANCE The freeze/thaw resistance of the formulated product can be greatly improved with additions of 1-5% sodium chloride. Higher ph also contributes to freeze/thaw stability.
