Combustion Why Benchmarking for Biomass Cookstoves in Nepal? Efficiency Provide policy makers, donors, stove programs and other stakeholders with a credible basis for comparing stove performance and safety. Help all stakeholders have a common set of terminology [Clean, Efficient, Safe, Durable] for communicating and understanding stove performance. Give stove makers affirmation of product quality. Let stove users know that they are making a worthwhile investment. Drive innovation in the industry. Subsidy provision based on the stove performance and type.. and most importantly, to set demarcation line for differentiating truly improved stove form those that needed further improvement before dissemination 7

Test Protocol, Facilities and Benchmarking for Cookstoves in Nepal Testing Protocol/methods recommended in NIBC - ISO-IWA recommended Water Boiling Test Version 4.2.2 and above shall be followed for testing the biomass cookstoves (excluding batch feeding type cookstoves and charcoal, briquette burning stoves). The stoves shall be tested under high power and low power phases. - BIS recommended IS 13152 standard testing procedure shall be followed for Thermal Efficiency test of batch fuel feeding type biomass cookstove (including charcoal stoves, briquette burning cookstoves and gasifiers). - Biomass Stove Safety Protocol - Version 1.1 (developed at Iowa State University and recommended by ISO-IWA) shall be followed for safety performance measurement. 8
