Anticipated Timeline (**Subject to Change**) 3 February 3, 2015 Public Presentation February 2015 Legal Review/Edits March 9, 2015 Board Presentation March 23, 2015 Potential Passing of Ordinance Adopting Sign Code
Why a new Sign Code? 4 Adopted in 1978, few amendments Businesses, organizations, and sign contractors have difficulty using current Sign Code Many types of signs missing from the Sign Code Complaints regarding the temporary signs Need of a more comprehensive Sign Code to facilitate review of permits
Goals 5 The following are goals the Village hopes to address with a new Sign Code: Improve readability of the Sign Code Include changes in industry unaddressed in current Sign Code Provide clarity through tables and diagrams Match the Sign Code with changes in Zoning Districts Enhance the image of the Village of Mundelein Change regulations to meet the vision and goals outlined by the Village in recent planning efforts
Intent for Presentation 6 Educate the public regarding proposed signage in the Community Provide information regarding the Village s vision No business or property owner is being asked to immediately remove existing operational signs that have received a permit; however, amortization is proposed for nonconforming signs over a period of at least 5 years
Benefits of New Sign Code 7 Multiple sign types per business New methods for calculating square footage Increased amounts of square footage, based on linear feet More periods for display of temporary signs/attentiongetting devices (four) More types of temporary signs Changes relating to Zoning Districts and use types Multi color and images for electronic message signs A Frame signs year round Easier to read Less need for Sign Variances
General Standards 8 Permits required for most signs Allow a maximum of 6 items Content neutral Specifies wall sign calculations Exempt address # from count Electronic message components & gas station prices count as one Directory signs, menuboards, A frame, real estate signs exempt from item limitations Landscape required around monument signs
